Please Welcome Author ROCHELLE STAAB!

[ Edited ]

On of my favorite things at BN.com is introducing debut authors, as I did last week. This week we have another debut author - ROCHELLE STAAB!

I read her book WHO DO, VOODOO? a few days ago - it officially comes out on Tuesday, November 1st. Some bookstores might have it early - it's worth checking, because it's a perfect Halloween read!

Re: Please Welcome Author ROCHELLE STAAB!

From Rochelle's website:

If you ever wondered what if or why, stayed up late to find out whodunit, or read the last page of a story first, then you understand the need to know. You are a mystery lover.

The White Elephant, checked out of the Finney Public Library on Sherman Boulevard in Milwaukee when I was nine years old, launched my lifetime love of mysteries. After a pre-teen passion for the Nancy Drew series, my appetite for mystery expanded to Sherlock Holmes as well as to the classics by Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and James M. Cain, with a dollop of wit from P.G. Wodehouse, Dorothy Parker, and Oscar Wilde. My taste.

Go figure.

Curiosity compelled me to write and take on the challenge to create characters, put them in danger, then answer the who, what, where, when, why, how, and what ifs, all the way to The End. Instant entertainment every day.

Who Do, Voodoo? is the first in my series of murder mysteries with a supernatural slant, featuring Liz Cooper—a pragmatic Los Angeles psychologist, and Nick Garfield, PhD—a professor of religious philosophy. Nick studies the occult. Liz dismisses it. Do I believe in the occult? What I believe doesn't matter. Who Do, Voodoo? has coincidences and twists of fate that even a skeptic like Liz Cooper cannot ignore.

Who Do, Voodoo? is coming on November 1 from Berkley Prime CrimeOrder yours now!

Rochelle Staab is a Los Angeles mystery writer who can be found most afternoons at her computer, plotting fictional murders and breaking fictional curses.

Rochelle displayed a flair for the dramatic early in life. As a child in Milwaukee, she performed pop music by microphone (a hairbrush) and built a personal library filled with a diverse selection of titles (comic books and Nancy Drew mysteries.) She appreciated the nuance and influence of small screen cinema (television.) She also loved school. Her front row desk was her stage; her textbooks served as her script. She recited each line to perfection, but repeating the words of others was not enough. She dreamed of becoming a novelist and informed everyone who would listen that one day she would write books.

But, as all creative types know, Rochelle had other things to do first.

Rochelle loves pop music.

One of Rochelle's first jobs out of school was as Programming Department secretary for a Top 40 radio station in Milwaukee—her dream job and first taste of the entertainment business. Hard work and experience led to a promotion and a move to the station's chain headquarters in New York. Within four years Rochelle was named National Music Director and then became Vice-President of Programming for the group of Top 40 radio stations, the first woman and youngest person to earn the title.

Still in her twenties, she moved to Los Angeles to program KIIS-FM, eventually segueing into a marketing position at Warner Bros. Records, the most successful music label on the West Coast. Throughout her career at the label, she had the honor of working with a multitude of talented WB artists and accumulated gold and platinum album awards as part of the marketing department. When she was named Vice-President of Advertising at the label, the campaigns Rochelle and her team produced for artists earned awards for both creative excellence and innovation.

Rochelle is fascinated by the supernatural.

Rochelle's interest in the mystical was sparked as a child when she overheard her Mother and Aunts whisper behind closed doors about trips to a fortuneteller—a scandalous taboo in their devout Catholic family. As a teen, she and her friends dabbled in the occult until a rainy afternoon at the Ouija board scared them straight. After Hurricane Katrina, a tour of the New Orleans French Quarter with a voodoo priestess inspired Rochelle to weave elements of the supernatural into her writing.

Rochelle loves mystery.

Rochelle's dream to become a novelist came true in the UCLA Writers' Program—a "do it or quit talking about it" challenge she gave herself. While in the Writers' Program, she started Who Do, Voodoo?, her first mystery novel. After completion, Who Do, Voodoo? won a Conference Choice Award at the San Diego State University 2010 Writer's Conference, was a 2010 RWA Golden Heart finalist in the Contemporary Series—Mystery/Adventure/Suspense category, and sold to Berkley Prime CrimeWho Do, Voodoo? is coming this November.

Rochelle is a member of the Mystery Writers of AmericaSisters In CrimeInternational Thriller WritersNARAS, and Mensa.

(Note: The juicy, sexy parts were omitted to protect the guilty and the innocent. Rochelle writes mystery, not romance. Seriously.)

Who Do, Voodoo

WHO DO, VOODOO? the first novel in Rochelle's thrilling new Mind for Murder Mystery series features no-nonsense Liz Cooper, a Los Angeles psychologist forced to embrace the occult to clear her best friend of murder...

When Liz Cooper's friend Robin Bloom finds an unusual tarot card tacked to her front door, Liz writes it off as a prank. Robin refuses to ignore the omen—her late husband drew the same card, the three of swords, in a reading the night before he was killed in a car accident. As more cards and darker threats appear, Liz realizes someone very dangerous is upping the ante.

Liz turns to her brother's ex-college roommate, occult expert Nick Garfield. As Nick leads her into the voodoo community to locate the origin of the deck, she can't ignore their attraction to each other. Then a woman is found murdered and Robin becomes the prime suspect. Determined to clear her friend, Liz joins forces with Nick to unravel otherworldly secrets and seek help from beyond—or risk being outwitted by a cunning killer...

Re: Please Welcome Author ROCHELLE STAAB!

Here's an excerpt:

A chill of anticipation washed through me…

Madame Iya’ rocked back and forth, shaking a small brass rattle. “We humbly ask you to send the spirit of our beloved Sophie to join us.” A full minute passed then Madame Iya’ spoke again. “Sophie is here.”

A candle popped. Shadows flickered on the walls outside of the circle. A draft swept across the floor and flickered the flames of the candles. I thought I saw a shadow move behind Jimmy and Tawny. I brushed away the sensation that someone else was in the room with us. I tensed up.

“Nola. Sophie wants you to publish her spell book.” Madame Iya’ let out a deep sigh. “She wants me to help you complete it.”

Linda’s body went rigid. She clenched her hand over mine and began to rock. She spoke in a deep and insistent voice; a voice I didn’t recognize. “No. I don’t want that. My secrets have to be protected. There will be danger. No.”

“What are you talking about, Linda?” Nola said.

Linda stared across the room. “Linda’s not here, my treasure.”

“Who are you?” Nola’s words came unsteady, searching. “Sophie?”

“Not Sophie. I’m Callia.”

The back of my neck tingled. Who was Callia? Linda gazed around the circle. She stopped when she got to me. Her face had changed: the softness drained from her features. She looked tired, older. Her eyes were vacant. A small terror edged my rational mind aside. I had a fleeting sensation that someone else’s eyes were staring at me from Linda’s face.

“You have to keep my secrets safe and with my family. Your question is answered inside.”

She held her eyes on mine. “Promise me.”

I nodded warily, not knowing what she meant. “I promise.”

A door down the hall slammed shut with a force so hard it rattled the windows. Tawny screamed. I jumped.

Welcome Rochelle:

I will definitely have to check out your debut novel, WHO DO VOODOO. Great book for this time of year!

Congratulations on your awards for creative excellence and innovation during your employment at Warner Bros. Records. I also enjoyed reading about your writing challenge that produced your first book. What a lesson for us all in regards to "just doing it" because you never know what the results may be!

Hope you enjoy your visit with us!

Re: Please Welcome Author ROCHELLE STAAB!

Hi Becke!

I'm so excited to be here this week with you and the B&N Community! I know we'll have fun.

My publisher, Berkley Prime Crime, came up with the title WHO DO, VOODOO? Haitian and New Orleans voodoo threads through the plot.  I loved the choice as soon as I heard it.

The second novel in the Mind For Murder Mystery series will be BRUJA BROUHAHA, a title I used as I wrote the story set around a Santeria botanica in the multi-cultural neighborhood surrounding MacArthur Park. Liz and Nick attempt to solve a baffling disappearance and a senseless killing while a vengeful hex puts the neighborhood in turmoil.

I was so excited when my editor told me the creative team at Berkley liked BRUJA BROUHAHA and decided to keep it! I hear the term Bruja,  the Spanish word for witch, is mass appeal now, thanks to TRUE BLOOD?

Good morning, Rochelle!

Your titles are so memorable, I'm sure a lot of people will pick them up just because of that. But you have really interesting plots, too. I'm looking forward to reading BRUJA BROUHAHA, too - do you have any idea what the release date will be?

If any of you see WHO DO, VOODOO? in stores today, would you let us know so we can spread the word? It's a great Halloween read, so I'm hoping we'll find some places where they shelved it prior to the official release date.

Hi, Rochelle---Congrats on your Debut Book. The covers of books often are what grabs me and I really like yours, along with the title.  The storyline really intrigues me and it sounds like it is a TBR for me.

Re: Please Welcome Author ROCHELLE STAAB!

Yes! We're gathering tomorrow night at Portrait of a Bookstore inside the Aroma Café on Tujunga Avenue in Studio City to celebrate. One of my favorite scenes in WHO DO, VOODOO? takes place on Tujunga so the location has special meaning for me.  I'll be in Milwaukee on November 15 to celebrate at Mystery One with my family and old friends. And then on November 26 (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) I'll be signing at the Barnes & Noble in the Westside Pavilion in West L.A. Whew!

Everyone has been so supportive and enthusiastic.  I'm having a blast. This morning I stopped at the Bookstar in Studio City to chat with some friends (and check to see if maaaaybe they put it out.) I have to wait until tomorrow, the official release date, but you can bet I'll be back Wednesday to sign copies!

Thank you! I love the cover too. The artist did a wonderful job of capturing the 'feel' of the story.
