Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Re: Please Welcome Featured Author JOANNA CAMPBELL SLAN!

I grew up in a violent, chaotic home with alcoholic parents. Early on, I found a copy of Jane Eyre and thought, "Gee, if she could find a way to change her life, so can I!" So Jane Eyre was, in my mind, the book that saved my life. Writing an extension of it was a delight.

Hi, Joanna, welcome to the forum. I've not read your books but my brain perked up when Becke mentioned the Jane Eyre Chronicles. I don't know how many times I have read Jane Eyre, but it is one of my favorite classics. I wil look for these books soon.

Actually, it wasn't a call or email. I "pitched" my agent and editor at Sleuthfest, the yearly conference held in Florida. They both said, "Send me your first fifty pages." After that it was a roller-coaster ride of "can you change this?" and "what about that?" and I just kept writing during the whole shooting match.

Wow - this is really exciting! Your "elevator pitch" must have been brilliant!

Hi Joanna - This comment showed up twice, but I'm afraid if I delete one they'll both disappear.

I'm so sorry about your rough childhood! It's a sign of strong character that you were able to take those experiences and turn them into a successful series. I've always loved Jane Eyre and my daughter loves it, too. I never could get into Wuthering Heights, although I might like it better if I read it now.

What other books influenced your writing, or your decision to become a writer?

Hey, it's not your fault! I know it shows up as mine. But we live in a cyberworld with stuff that's beyond our control--and if that's the only problem I have, huh. No biggie.

I totally agree. I'm not a genius like Charlotte Bronte, but I always wondered what happened next to Jane and Edward, and so I decided to add to their story. I hope you'll give Death of a Schoolgirl (#1) and Death of a Dowager (#2) a try!

Re: Please Welcome Featured Author JOANNA CAMPBELL SLAN!

You know, Becke, I think that every book I've read has influenced me in ways I don't even realize. Sometimes I think that those of us who are readers are a composite of all we've read. In fact, I bet a list of all the books I've read would be like a diary of my life. But to be more specific: Jane Eyre, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Rebecca, Mary Poppins (the originals), The Borrowers, Charlotte's Web, and A Wrinkle in Time (I actually took a class with Madeline L'Engle).

Oh, dear, MaxCat, I responded but I'm not sure that it seems like I responded directly to you! I hope you see my answer!

Here 'tis: Kiki Lowenstein's comfortable soccer mom world is turned upside down when her husband is found naked and dead in a hotel room. Since she's only ever been good at two things--scrapbooking and getting pregnant--she's down to one marketable skill.

Oh, thanks for bringing this up, Joanna. Do you recommend your books be read in order, starting at the beginning? Or does each book stand alone?

And while we're talking about the series as a whole, what's up next for you? Are you working on the next book in the series or something different?

Re: Please Welcome Featured Author JOANNA CAMPBELL SLAN!

Personally, I like to read books in order because I love seeing characters grow and change. However, each book can be read alone.

Re: Please Welcome Featured Author JOANNA CAMPBELL SLAN!

I'm working on another Kiki Lowenstein book, and a new series called "Happy Holidays" for Berkley. The first one in that will be titled: DEAD ELF WALKING. (At least I hope that they keep that title.)

Love that. I'll have to send you a picture of the "gnome" I found the other day while I was out walking! I have a habit of looking for stuff. I'm sort of a magpie.

I love that title! BTW, the gnomes are definitely playing here today. I've been unable to post comments for awhile.
