Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Thanks so much, J! You've put a smile on my face this evening, something a bit difficult, given that I had a root canal and crown 4 hrs. ago, and the novacaine is first starting to wear off!

The Anastasia covers are all done by Midnight Ink, but I had a lot of input in the concept. The covers for my indie published books and the ones where I've gotten my rights back have all been done by my son. He's an animator and visual effects artist for TV and the movies.

How cool! I don't think I checked YouTube - do you have book trailers for any of your books? If so, did your son design them?

I actually taught myself how to make a video. Once I bought a Mac computer, it wasn't as intimidating a process as I thought it would be. You can find the one I made for ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY GLUE GUN on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nah_pr_PONM

There's also a video of LOVE, LIES AND A DOUBLE SHOT OF DECEPTION that a friend put together for me years ago. You can find that one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-EAejc7OC8

I haven't done any more videos because they're very time consuming, and I'm not convinced they do anything to help sell books. Book videos were a fad for awhile, but I don't know that many authors are doing them any more. Those who paid to have them done found it to be very costly. You can easily blow your entire advance on a professionally made book video.

Lois - What conferences are you going to this year? I MIGHT go to Malice Domestic - it's a little trickier for me this year, since I've got the baby here on weekdays.

I'm signed up for Malice Domestic and Bouchercon. I'm debating RWA. Since it's in Atlanta, and I have family there, I'll probably go. I'm waiting to see if the Festival of Mystery will happen this year. Haven't heard any word on that yet. And next weekend I'm off to Cocoa Beach, FL for the Space Coast Writers Guild conference. So far that's it for the year.

I've always wanted to go to the Space Coast conference. Maybe one day!

Space Coast is quite different from other conferences I've attended because it encompasses all genres plus non-fiction.

I didn't realize that! There are some conferences in Chicago I'd like to attend, too. I'll see how it goes.

Lois - Do you have any craft articles coming out soon in magazines that the crafters at the Mystery Forum might be able to find? Or are there any crafts you'd like to share here?

The March issue of "Cross-stitch & Needlework" features a Welcome sampler design of mine. Also, anyone interested in crafts should check out Anastasia's Killer Crafts & Crafty Killers blog, specifically on Mondays. There's always a craft project featured, and I try to keep them simple so anyone can do them: http://www.anastasiapollack.blogspot.com

I'm not very talented with crafts myself, but I know we have some crafters among the regulars here.

If any of you make crafts Lois has featured, take a picture and email it to me. I'll upload it here for you.

Lois Winston: 'Revenge of the Crafty Corpse'

"Revenge of the Crafty Corpse"

By Lois Winston

Revenge of the Crafty Corpse

In "Gypsy," there’s a wonderful scene in which strippers explain to Gypsy Rose Lee what she needs to be successful: "You gotta have a gimmick."

They bump and grind; one has a trumpet, one an electrified costume and yet another does her version of ballet. Each has a gimmick.

And Lois Winston, of Westfield, has hers.

In no way am I suggesting she’s in burlesque — just that she understands the need for a gimmick. Writers need to make themselves distinct in the crowded mystery market. And Winston, a designer of needlework and crafts projects, like her protagonist, Anastasia, has been a crafts editor.

This book, much of which unfolds at an assisted living facility in Westfield, includes directions for crafts. It details how to make fabric yo-yos, which don’t walk the dog, but use material scraps as decorations.

It’s a cute gimmick and gives Winston a niché. The book has what a mystery should: people dying and no clear culprit. It moves along at a good pace — until slowed by Winston’s sometimes clunky phrasing, a reliance on clichés and forced gags for names, such as Anastasia’s mom, Flora Sudberry Periwinkle Ramirez Scoffield Goldberg O’Keefe. Incidentally, as an S.J. Perelman devotee, I love funny names, and the detective in this title, Sam Spader, is a good one, but others fall flat.

Anastasia’s mother-in-law is recuperating in the assisted living and rehab center, where the deaths take place. Anastasia’s husband, the "dead louse of a spouse," left her in debt, with two teenage sons, and Lucille, his Communist, nasty mom.

slonlinej20B.jpg

Westfield's Lois Winston sets this tale of murder and crafts in a rehab facility in her hometown.

"She should only know that her son had tried to kill her to get his hands on her life’s savings — which he then proceeded to gamble away, leaving me to clean up the mess after he conveniently dropped dead at a roulette table in Las Vegas."

A 98-year-old former madam is murdered. Here, we meet Detective Spader, who asks: "Are you saying the victim, a 98-year-old woman, had a sexual encounter last night?"

"No," said Lucille. "I’m saying she had more than one."

The facility’s busybody is also murdered. Meanwhile, Anastasia teaches art classes there, works at the magazine, deals with her obnoxious mother-in-law and her randy mother, tries to whittle down her debt and is happily distracted by Zack.

"Who would have thought that a guy who looks like Pierce Brosnan, George Clooney, Patrick Dempsey and Antonio Banderas all contributed to his gene pool would be interested in a pear-shaped, cellulite-riddled, slightly overweight, more than slightly in debt, middle-aged widow? Certainly, not me. But there Zack was in my life. And if that weren’t enough, the guy can outcook Jamie Oliver, Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse. All together. With one hand tied behind his back."

Yes, Zack is a complete fantasy and has inexplicably fallen for Anastasia. Though if all fantasies required logic, what fun would they be? Being dutiful to a mean, demanding mother-in-law and to her ditsy, selfish mother only makes Anastasia all the more relatable, especially to women doing too much for everyone else.

She drives a rust bucket with failed air conditioning during a Jersey heat wave, she makes tuna sandwiches for dinner and all she wants is a little quiet. Of course, with a Shakespeare-spouting parrot, a dog and a cat, that’s unlikely. It’s not Anastasia’s fault that people get murdered around her, or that she sees connections the authorities don’t.

Anastasia stumbles upon evidence. The first murder victim, a master craftswoman, had kept journals of her work for years. The police didn’t bother with them and the imperious director of the facility was going to toss them, so Anastasia brought them home, curious about the victim’s crafts.

Like all good sleuths, Anastasia pieces together what others don’t. She eventually alerts the police, who are dubious.

"Detective Spader chewed on my words as he chewed on the inside of his cheek. ‘And you came up with all this from bits and pieces she hid throughout those loose-leaf binders?’ "

The book has a fun twist, which, of course, won’t be revealed here and it’s clear that Anastasia, the everyday woman who loves crafts and desserts, and has a complete hottie in pursuit, will return to solve another murder and offer more crafts tips — because you gotta have a gimmick.
