Wow, Becke... That's an impressive list. Yours clearly trumps mine!

When our financial advisor saw how much we spend on books (my husband is a big reader, too, just not fiction), I thought she'd have a heart attack! My husband and I are used to it. Shelter, food, books, clothes.

My brother manages an indie book store and sends me lots of (old) ARCs, and I do get quite a few ARCs from publishers. But I also hit every library sale I can find, and I practically live at book stores. Hardly a day goes by that I don't add at least one book to my collection.

I do trade them and pass them on to friends once I've read them, otherwise there would be no room to move in my house!

OH... I just remembered another question I wanted to ask. I'll preface it with this:

I know a lot of readers enjoy funny or comical mysteries. I admit to liking black humor or sarcasm in some crime fiction,eg Carl Hiassen, and, of course, Bernie Rhodenbahr. And Donald Westlake. And I've been known to throw a few (hopefully) dry humor-ish lines into my Ellie Foreman series.

But... essentially.. I think murder is such a heinous crime that it's difficult for me to find amusement while the protagonist is trying to restore order and justice. It  just seems too trivial.

So my question is, why do you like humor in your mysteries? How do you reconcile the tragedy/horror of murder with a comedic heroine or plot?

Interesting.

Like you, I'm a fan of Donald Westlake and Bernie Rhodenbarr, and I love Jennifer Crusie's books, which often include a mystery mixed with witty romance. I like Jill Churchill's Jane Jeffry books and a few other books/series that have humor mixed in. But on the whole I'm more likely to read a super dark Karen Rose than a humorous mystery. I might read the funny mysteries if I'm in the right mood, and I do like cozies, but if it's a serial killer or a gruesome crime, humor can pull me out of the scene.

Libby,

I read An Image of Death a few weeks ago, after attending one of your book signings, and thought it was a great story! I live in SE Wisconsin but spend some time in IL, so it was kind of a thrill to read about the streets and places I've been before in your book. It made the story even more alive!

Thank you so much, Kayla! IMAGE is probably my favorite of the Ellie Foreman books... it says things I didn't know I wanted to say, namely about women and what they do when their options are taken away from them.

I'm so glad it worked for you!

Re: Please welcome author LIBBY FISCHER HELLMANN

Well, I just got back from THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE film. I liked it a lot. But there wasn't the "wow" factor that I felt with the first film. Maybe it's because we know the characters and there weren't any surprises there. Like the book, it's a little slow in the beginning, but picks up nicely. Erika has a bigger role in this one, which is good. I like her character. Generally, it's quite faithful to the book...

Definitely worth seeing, if you like the books.

Re: Please welcome author LIBBY FISCHER HELLMANN

Libby - this isn't a goodbye because you are featured through Sunday, but I wasn't sure if you were going to be checking in over the weekend. It's entirely up to you.

Tomorrow is my RWA chapter meeting, followed by a writer's workshop, followed by a party to celebrate some friends getting agents and/or sales, so I'm not likely to be around until tomorrow evening.

This thread is "yours" now, so I hope you'll come back whenever you have news - a new release, a book trailer, a new cover, a B&N book signing, a guest blog, or anything you'd like to share with us.

The interesting here is that while the number of people posting comments isn't especially high (mainly due to our glitchy sign in process), the view count goes up and up long after your visit. Just search your name to find this thread; posting a new comment will move it to the front of the board. The view count may be in the hundreds now (check the first post on the thread), but you'll be surprised how often this thread will continue to be viewed in the future.

I'll say thank you now in case I miss you tomorrow - I've really enjoyed your visit, and I think you've got a LOT of new readers after this. I hope I'll get to meet you in real life one of these days.

I won't be posting next week's featured author thread until Sunday evening, so please stay and chat as long as you want!

Thank You Glitter Graphics

It never fails to surprise me how eclectic our tastes are. There's an author who write cozy-ish novels (I will not name her) who has won major awards and is beloved by most mystery readers, including, I  imagine, a lot of the readers in this group. I have literally started her first book FOUR times and I can't get past page 70.

By the same token, I suspect there are many books that I find devilishly funny, or tragic, or sad, that many of you wouldn't give the time of day.

Thankfully, crime fiction is so diverse we can all follow our passions.

Here's another question I wonder about... do you ever feel the need NOT to read crime fiction for a bit? To switch to another genre or read (dare I say it  because I hate labels) a "literary" novel? That's happening to me recently. Partly because of the research I'm doing for my next book, but also because I've been needing a break from the genre.

What about you?

Without knowing which books you are refering to. I have no idea whether I've already given them my time of day or if I never got past the back blurb. Far too many books out there for someone to not find one that pleases them.

Yes. I mix mysteries, Sci/Fi, paranormal, childrens, and the occational classic or history book. Depending on what I'm in the mood for. And to be honest in order of amount read per month that list is 3rd to 4th, 2nd, 1st, 4th to 3rd, 5th.

There are some authors I can't read, either because their voice grates on me or because they write in dialect -- I even had trouble with that in To Kill a Mockingbird. I like listening to different accents, but I don't like to READ them. I'd rather leave that to my imagination. But there are authors who write in dialect whose books are so gripping I barely notice I'm reading dialect.

(laughing) You know that was one of the "have to read due to school" books I really enjoyed. But then well that particular dialect is common to my ears. Which brings me to this question Becke, you've read

In the Electric Mist with the Confederate Dead (Dave Robicheaux Series #6)   this one? Man uses accents thick enough to spread on toast. Which camp would you put him in?

I'm ok with strange accents, so long as I can fall into the flow of the dialog.

Becke: Thank you so much for being such a lively moderator. This has been a lot of fun!

I will check in once or twice over the weekend and see what's doing. In fact, for my "farewelll" post, I'll post the new cover (which we just finalized) for SET THE NIGHT ON FIRE. In fact, you guys will be the FIRST readers to see it! You'll all have to let me know what you think...

Tiggerbear: I had real problems with THE HELP at the beginning. The patois was really distracting. But then, all of a sudden, it went away (or I got used to it) and I didn't mind it at all! Funny about that...

Well the more gruesome the job, the darker the humor used. It's a natural rubber band effect the human brain uses.

Hmm and the really humorous ones (the Plum novels for example) the mystery is the salt on the pretzel really. But unless I'm reading true crime, I expect jokes. Life is like that. (shrug)

I had a similar experience not to long ago. Between the Chinese idioms and the Communist China police procedures, took me almost 100 pages to get into. Now though if I were to read a sequel or something similar, I think I'd be fine. It was just so foreign to my ears initially.

Oh do stop by, this has been fun.

Libby - That's so exciting! Did I explain how to post it? If it's on the internet, just right click and "copy image," then paste it in. If your publisher sends it to you as a jpeg on your computer, I'll have to upload it for you - just send it to me in an email. Right now only moderators can post personal pictures.

So The Help has a lot of dialect? Rats. My daughter just read it, and she LOVED it. I bought it on her recommendation, but haven't started to read it yet.

Re: Please welcome author LIBBY FISCHER HELLMANN

I know I definitely need a break from mysteries of any kind as sometimes mysteries 4 or 5 books right in a row can be boring to me. I do read old classics sometimes or fiction, I love Clive Cussler's books. I try to be diverse but I have tried to read the Twilight saga and I just can't get past the second chapter. I've done this twice and if it doesn't grab me, out it goes into the trash. I also look for the book covers as they may look interesting and I'll read what is inside the cover and either buy it or not.

My life is a reading list.

I'm seeing this but you aren't, so I'm going to ask Libby to send me the image again. It could be a glitch with the uploads - I've had this happen before.
