The weather is a constant talk at the water cooler where most of us here just want to dump it over our heads :smileyhappy:

It's been in the mid to upper 90s all week here and hopefully today we may get some rain, but usually when it's that hot the rain is usually severe and that's not good either.

Other than that I resigned my seat on the Library board where I've served for the last five years, I was just sick of hitting my head against a wall and interestingly the only person who called and asked me to change my mind was the director of the library, none of the board members said anything at all, so I guess that says something. Anyway five years is long enough so now I'll just volunteer at my local branch and hope my contribution there will end with better results.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the week

Debbie - I'm so sorry you felt the need to resign from your seat on the library board. I think the fact that the library director contacted you while the board members didn't is a good indication that the board has their own agenda. It's always sad when that happens, especially if the people who depend on the library are hurt in the process.

Be my guest, Deb and becke. I'm just glad that one of my quaint phrases could make Deb feel a bit better about her situtation. Becke, if you use that in a book, all I want is a signed copy! :catlol:

Hello All from Phillip Duke Ph.D.

[ Edited ]

Hello, I am new here. With 17 ebook titles on [EDITED BY BECKE] another bookseller site I am publishing now with Barnes and Noble. Regarding mysteries, Sherlock Holmes is my favorite detective, and I have 4 ebooks where he investigates and solves baffling crime mysteries.

Jack The Ripper versus Sherlock Holmes is an intimate combination of historical fact and literary fiction. The Ripper was a serial killer and mutilator of women, who was never caught, but in this book he is identified and dealt with. Six illustrations include a picture of what may be him? The cover illustration is an infamous crime scene photo of a victim.

In Sherlock Holmes And The Napped Children Sherlock Holmes investigates how several children are kidnapped, without witnesses seeing anything unusual. He discovers the method and the napper is caught, but he takes poison, and the children appear lost. Without evidence to go on, Holmes comes up with a novel method of solving the case. This Sherlock Holmes mystery has an unusual twist.. The cover illustration is a Sidney Paget original, from Strand magazine.

Unfortunately the Sidney Paget image is too large to be displayed here, so I am posting the cover from Sherlock Holmes And The Alien Abduction instrad. The cover is a film clip showing Basil Rathbone as Holmes, and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Courtesy Republic Pictures. Please know that all four of my Sherlock Holmes ebooks are available from Barnes and Noble.

    Good reading!

Hi Phillip - Welcome to the Mystery Forum! Sorry I had to edit your introductory comment, but Barnes & Noble hosts this board and their rules don't allow us to mention competitors (any other booksellers) here.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Well, how cool is this?!  I just discovered the Mystery Forum, and have found an empty corner of the couch to settle in with an old favorite - time to re-read some Dorothy L Sayers, I'd say.  The setting just calls for it!  And maybe a glass of sherry instead of my usual beer ...

I'm R.E. (Ruth) Donald, from the general vicinity of Vancouver, BC, within walking distance of the USA.  Some of my favorite mystery writers are, or have been (besides Dorothy L.), Rex Stout, John D. MacDonald, Dick Francis, PD James, Ruth Rendell, Elizabeth George, Martha Grimes, Michael Connelly, John Lescroart, and I know I'm leaving somebody important out, but you get the drift.  I've been a mystery fan since my pre-teens and Nancy Drew, and I'm now - never mind.

I started writing my first crime novel at about twelve - all I remember is that it involved a girl getting thrown from her horse (repeatedly) and suffering a concussion (repeatedly).  I like to think I've improved considerably since then.  I now have a couple of novels in my Hunter Rayne highway mystery series available as ebooks, and I hope the trade paperback editions get picked up by B&N when they're available in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to read a whodunit series that's kind of constructed like Martha Grimes' mystery series but set in North America and featuring a former homicide detective turned lonely long haul truck driver (anybody else love that TV series 'Hack'?), please check out Slow Curve on the Coquihalla or  Ice on the Grapevine .  My third novel will be released in a digital edition late this year.

If anybody on here took advantage of downloading Slow Curve on the Coquihalla as a free ebook last month and reviewed it, thanks!  And with my reader hat on, I'm always on the hunt for new mystery series with realistic characters that are not quite cozies: I don't like psychopathic killers or graphic violence, (for example, I admire James Lee Burke's writing and put up with the violence, but can't take Dean Koontz's villains, nor those of Patricia Cornwell)  I do like multiple main characters with personal lives that develop throughout the series, much like John Lescroart's Dismas Hardy and Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch.  Suggestions welcome!

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Welcome, Phillip and Ruth. I see that both of you have written books which are available via an e-reader, but are your books available, or will they be, in print form anytime soon? I'm still stubbornly sticking to print reading, so I won't be able to access your books unless they are printed.

Ruth, I'm also a big fan of Dorothy L. Sayers and Rex Stout. I'm wondering if you've read any of Jill Paton Walsh's books--you know, she's the one who was given permission to finish a postumous manuscript left by Sayers, and has gone on to produce several other novels featuring Lord Peter and Harriet(nee Vane, now Lady Peter). I have also read her Imogen Quy mysteries, and thought her last book in that series, The Bad Quarto, was particularly good. I think you would enjoy reading it.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Library boards and directions can be...interesting political beasts.  I know ours is in constant controversy.  It's amazing.  All about books and no one can agree and with all the politics going on, you'd think someone was running for President!

I know I haven't been by in a while.  Sorry about that.  Sometimes I have to get offline to get some work done.  That said, I have a new cozy fantasy out!  Dragons of Wendal went live this week.  If you like your mysteries with a mix of fantasy, this one might be for you!

In other news...it's HOT.  My garden is about done producing, which means it will soon be time to cut back the tomato plants and pull out all but a couple.  Gardening in Texas is...difficult.  But I got about a dozen jars of tomatoes canned.  Not the 50 I wanted, but some is way better than none!!!

Need to read back and see what else y'all have been up to.  Fricka, I hope you are feeling better.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Oh and some of my comments were from reading back in the thread a ways.  That might be confusing.  Sorry.  That is what happens when I multi-task and browse through posts.

Fricka, I didn't realize you were still into print.  :smileyembarrassed:)  Dragons of Wendal will be out in print in about 8 weeks.  Do not ask me why it takes that long to make it's way through the channel.  I guess they print it and then ship it by canoe and hikers.

And fantasy may not be your thing at all, but I wanted people to know that I do have a print version.  It's just on a bicycle somewhere...

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Hi Becky.  We have had our AC crap out twice this seaon.  URK!  It was 103 the second time it happened.  Luckily husband is an electrical engineer and was able to cobble it together to keep it going while we wait on the part we need.  URK!  It's too hot in Texas to survive without it.  And it won't run on batteries...

I hope you all have power - I hear a lot of the country is having these blackouts. I feel so bad for the people in Colorado Springs with the fires - power cuts don't seem so bad when I think of them.
