Re: Welcome to the Mystery Forum

Ha, I sit here with FIVE remote controls beside me!  The TV, the cable, my old VCR/DVD player, and my newer Blu-Ray surround sound system, plus a little one for my CD/IPod player (I like to mute the TV and listen to music during the commercials).  I hardly use the VCR any more (I play DVDs in the Blu-Ray), but I still have quite a collection of VHS tapes and watch them once in a while, so I keep that one on the end table, but the others are all lined up on the couch.  I have to snatch them and move them around when Khan comes to lie next to me for a belly rub, or he can step on a button and mess something up!  It seems that neither the Samsung Blu-Ray or the cable remotes have a code for my Vizio TV.  Anyway, I'm always afraid that if I try to consolidate them, I might lose access to some of the more specialized features on each device.  But it is a pain!

Fricka, my mother cannot learn how to use a DVD player (or VCR) either.  And she seems to take pride in it!  My father sometimes got confused, but could learn them.  Since he's been gone, she's given up on playing any tapes or disks.  I'm surprised she can even handle the TV and cable!  But she's not all that interested in watching stuff, anyway.  She watches some TV, and only has the very basic cable with her local stations and a couple of others.  Before my father passed away, my brother, who lives in Florida, and his family visited, and my brother got it into my head that my father should have access to the History Channel, so he called the cable company and upgraded them to a more extensive package.  When the first monthly bill came, my mother flipped!!!  She immediately downgraded it.  I don't know why my brother thought they would like a really high bill to pay each month!  He should have thought about the ongoing consequences of his action.

" Indentured Servant of the Remote Control" - Bwahahaha!!

Fricka and Dulcinea, we used to have a gazillion remotes, and only my husband knew what remote worked what. For awhile I couldn't even figure out which one turned on the TV. Drove me NUTS! Luckily we've simplified now.

Oh, I wish I could forget about it, becke. The more I think about it, the more I dislike the idea of having two sets of buttons to worry about on a remote. Putting both on one remote does not make it easier to use, but instead there's more chance to flub something up. I did suggest to Dad that he try to get another Samsung remote(as that is the manufacturer of our older TV set), but apparently, none of the stores that sell individual remotes have that kind available anymore. Kind of reminds me of when I went off to grad school, and wanted an updated Smith Corona typewriter, only to be told by one of the salesmen at the store where I'd gotten my previous typewriter, that Smith Corona's weren't available anymore. We had to drive 90 miles to  get to a store where they did still carry Smith Corona typewriters/Word processors. I don't think I would call myself "Queen of the Remote Control," either, becke. I think my situation is more like " Indentured Servant of the Remote Control"! Hah!

They now sell what is called a "universal" remote. When you find out how to operate the remote, just write down the steps and keep it handy for when the "Queen of the Remote Control" is not available!

becke, the above are a few copies that I got to show you what I've discovered in several of the review

sections of Sheila Connolly's Orchard Series books. I wrote an email to customer service yesterday to notify someone at B&N about this flagrant misuse of book review sections. All I got back was the usual form e-mail, so as far as I know, no one in management is aware of, or working on, this problem. Since you're a moderator, is there any way YOU can notify the powers that be that SOMEONE needs to be monitoring the reviews a bit more closely?

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

BTW, I'd just like to add a few points to my above post. 1, I was getting ready to write a review myself about Sheila's latest book when I spotted a disturbing number of what, for want of a better term, I'll call "Spam" content "reviews" Of course, they weren't reviews at all, but a number of posts sent out by pranksters. I drew the line when I read entries that spoke about mating and being available for mating. Of course, I flagged all of the offending entries and sent the aforementioned e-mail to customer service, as that's the only place I could find on the Barnes and Noble home page that was even close to what I wanted.

2. I just checked another, competing bookselling site, whose name we don't use here, and have to report that there are NO inappropriate reviews of books (at least not for the same books by SC that I've mentioned) there. I also notice that some of the names of people who used to be writing reviews for BN mysteries, but haven't been seen on BN recently, are now writing at the opposing site.  Just an observation.

This is maddening, Fricka. I'll let Jeremy know - maybe he can help.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Fricka, I think I've seen similar 'reviews' once in a while.  It looks to me like some people (probably kids) are trying to use the review system as their personal role-playing game.

Unfortunately, it is probably unlikely that B&N will do anything about it.  I have seen many posts about reviews in the Community board, and that B&N does not monitor the reviews or respond to complaints or flags.  Anyway, if they cleaned up the reviews for this one book, there are plenty more out there attached to others.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Thank you, becke.

I consider myself a loyal Barnes and Noble patron, but this one aspect just frosts me. What makes the whole thing even more frustrating is that there's no conduit for customers like myself to get through to communicate with the ones who would have the power or inclination to do anything about the situation. Of course, after reading dulcinea's post, I'm rethinking that idea that Barnes and Noble is interested in maintaining its site properly. I guess the idea that obviously fraudulent "reviews" might be a turn-off to potential customers has not occured to B&N--but it ought to.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

I was curious, so I took a look.  It's definitely roleplaying - they mention "rp" a lot.  They seem to be mostly illiterate kids who are pretending to be cats and horses.  One mentioned getting locked out of some vet and Black Stallion books.  I saw one message telling the others to continue at "Jenny Oldfield all results", and I see that they are doing this on her books (with today's date).

I posted a 'review' on Oldfield's first listed book, telling them to cut it out and go over to Goodreads, where they can set up their own RP group.  Probably won't do any good, though.

You are my heroine, dulcinea3! I'd thought of doing that, but since it was after the date they'd posted. Wonder if it would help if I posted something along with yours? BBL.

Re: Welcome to the B&N Mystery Forum - Introduce Yourself!

Well, I found that you were right, dulcinea3. Those jokers were posting their RP messages to Jenny 's latest book( and that's the only one I checked.) I added a review message that told them that Jenny's book was dealing with a serious subject, and that they were being disrespectful to her and her work("dissing" is what I actually used, as I think they would get that). I also went through and flagged every one of their posts. It would help if any of the other readers in this forum would join in doing that. If BN gets enough flagged reviews in that section, MAYBE someone would get around to deleting those spam RP posts. If it were my decision to make, I'd also see to it that each one of those RPers who've been using BN for their own private playground, got banned from the site altogether. But, what are the chances of THAT happening????
