Gothic mysteries with supernatural touches really appeal to me. I might have to read this book too!

I just finished

To Fetch a Thief (Chet and Bernie Series #3). I've had the book for a long time but waited to read it until I was really in the mood for a story with down-to-earth characters, good suspense and charming humor. I love the way this series is written from Chet's doggy perspective. There's no question that I'll be getting and reading the 4th book

The Dog Who Knew Too Much (Chet and Bernie Series #4).

The Man Who Invented Christmas

I am reading this at the present time. It's a very good portrayal of Dicken's younger days.

Oh, how appropriate, maxcat! This year is the 200th anniversary of Dickens' birth. The Barnes and Noble store I visited on Friday had a very nice Dickens Display, with many of his best known books. If my memory serves me right, there's a leather-bound version of A Tale of Two Cities. I gave a copy of A Christmas Carol to my brother for Christmas several years ago, but seem to have lost my own copy. I need to get another one!

becke, I've been meaning to check out that Chet and Bernie series. With your recommendation of that most current book in the series, I'm going to do my best to get one of the books to read--soon!

BTW, that would be a great book to have on hand this week, as the Westminster Dog Show is once again being held in Feb,, in NYC.  Maybe I will get out one of my older Susan Conant mysteries out, since Holly Winter, her protagonist, shows Malamutes, Rowdy and Kimi, at Dog Shows. Anyone who wants to know the inside details of what Dog Shows are like should read Conant's books. I think there are some other mysteries featuring dogs, but can't think of them at the moment. Anyone else know of a mystery writer who features a dog prominently in his/her books?

The Witness

I received an advance copy of this and all I can say is WOW! Nora is really in top form here - definitely a keeper! I was holding my breath a lot - very suspenseful, but the best thing was the wonderful heroine. And the hero is perfect for her! Yes, it's got romance, but this is definitely a thriller!

Re: What are you reading right now?

I finished up

Mockingjay (Hunger Games Series #3)  in a day and a half. Wow! Intense series - I can see why it is so popular, for sure. I really enjoyed it. I'm also reading "While The Light Lasts" which is a collection of Agatha Christie's short stories. Strangely, couldn't find it in the "Add Product." *shrug*

I am also finishing up

Because of Winn-Dixie  . I started reading it aloud to my daughter, but she's convinced that she can't read chapter books yet since she's only in Kindergarten. I used to tell my son its impossible to argue with a four-year-old; it's also impossible to argue with a five-year-old.

I'm also back to reading

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3)  .

"The Answer to the Great Question of ... Life, the Universe and Everything ... (is) 42." -- Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

I had never heard of this collection, Ruth, so I looked it up on wikipedia.  Apparently, it was first published in 1997 in the UK.  The article only indicates that two of the stories had appeared in other collections (they were all published in magazines), but I know that sometimes American collections included stories that had not appeared in UK collections, so maybe I have some of them in other books.  The story Manx Gold sounds really interesting:

"Manx Gold was one of the most unusual commissions undertaken by Christie in her career. As described in detail in an editorial note, the idea of a treasure hunting story was prompted by a wish on the part of Manx politicians to promote tourism to the Isle of Man. Christie wrote a short story which was serialised in the Daily Dispatch in five instalments on May 23, 24, 26, 27 and 28, 1930. The story gave the clues to the location of four snuffboxes hidden on the island, each of which contained a voucher for £100 - a considerable sum in 1930. Island residents were barred from taking part. To further promote the hunt, the story was then published in a promotional booklet entitled June in Douglas which was distributed at guesthouses and other tourist spots. Although a quarter of a million copies of this booklet were printed, only one is known to have survived."

I wonder if all of the snuffboxes were found!

What a cool story! I'm amazed I hadn't heard about this before - thanks so much for sharing it!
