Re: What are you reading right now?

I'd Know You Anywhere was the first Lippman book I read and I had the same reaction to it, though I did force myself to finish it.  There is just something a little too impersonal and cold about her writing.  I know I'm in the minority on her, but I really don't like her.

No worries, Ryan! Luckily there are enough writers out there we can find one to suit our tastes! There are a few famous authors I'm not crazy about, even though the rest of the world seems to love them. Look at the variety of things we all read - easy to see we're all looking for different things.

I have to treat discussions about "Twilight" like religion and politics - I only discuss the series with those I know won't judge me too harshly if I disagree with their view of the series. :smileywink:

Death Drops: A Natural Remedies Mystery

Death Drops: A Natural Remedies Mystery by Chrystle Fiedler

This is the first book of a planned series from Gallery Books. I got this at my local Barnes and Noble last weekend, and so far I'm enjoying it very much. The book does indeed feature natural remedies in its writing, as the protagonist, Willow, is a Naturopathic Doctor. I was leafing through the book, as there are letters from patients to Dr. Willow McQuade at the beginning of each chapter,  and her answers are really informative, even though it's supposed to be fictional. I even found a remedy mentioned in Chapter 26(although I haven't read that far yet) that gives advice on what to do if you have heartburn after eating chocolate or potato chips. I actually had the remedy on hand, but had not been using it, but I've started using it again now, thanks to Fiedler's book.( Do NOT want to give up eating chocolate, that's for sure!)

Ryan, hope you are enjoying those Josephine Tey mysteries. Like becke wrote, don't worry about it if you don't enjoy some books that others do. We all have our own favorites and non-favorites, and there's bound to be some disagreement at some point. Right now my TBR pile is so high already that I haven't had time to read some of the authors who seem to be really popular in the mystery genre today.

basson_mommy, I hear ya! I have not read any of the Twilight novels, nor do I plan to. I get the same thing with the Harry Potter books I've read, though. I'm the only one in my family who has read them, although I did read the first five books to my parents. ( Had to stop after that, as my mother was extremely upset with the Umbridge character, and did not want to hear anything else after the ending of that book.).I'm really excited that JK Rowling has written a new book that IS a mystery, and will be released in a few months. Don't know whether I'll really like it or not, but plan to check it out.  .

I actually entered a giveaway on Goodreads for that book, but didn't win. :catsad:  It sounded interesting (and I love the cats on the cover!).  The one book I did win (not a mystery, but a biography of Henry VII) hasn't arrived yet, and it's been about two months, so I'm not feeling so positive about their giveaways now.

Re: What are you reading right now?

I'm back on the Game of Thrones series, reading

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire #3)  . Apparently HBO has green-lighted the third season, which will follow roughly half of this installment of the series.

I'm also reading

Spider's Web , another of the plays adapted by Charles Osborne.

I like the fact that season 2 was filmed in Croatia. I am going there in September for 2 weeks (land of my grandparents). So excited - been on my bucket list for years!

Re: What are you reading right now?

I used to read Danielle Steel's books but they got to the point where you open the book and it was basically the same story, just different names and towns. But The Ghost intrigued me and I started reading it yesterday. I'm also reading Poison in the Blood: the memoirs of Lucrezia Borgia and The Ice Queen. The last book is very good about a woman hit by lightning and living to tell about it. Just yesterday, We had some thunderstorms west of my location in the foothills. A man there was hit twice by lightning and lived. He has burns on one of his feet and is in the hospital but he lived!

My life is a reading list.

Maxcat, that book about a woman getting hit by lightning sounds familiar. Could that by any chance be by Alice Hoffman? If I remember correctly, the woman in that book was color blind, and so did not know when she had on a red dress.

There's also a mystery series by Charlaine Harris(she of the Sookie Stackhouse Vampire series) that features Harper Connolly, who was hit by lightning, and afterwards found she could find dead bodies--they "spoke" to her, so to speak. Guess the chances of one's surviving lighning might be higher than what we expect, or else, it's so rare that it's easy to fictionalize someone who did survive into an interesting protagonist.
