Re: What are you reading right now?

becke, I just finished checking the Phoenix Public Library online system, and it has ONE Velda Johnston book in the catalog--The Etruscan Smile.

The Etruscan Smile (Candlelight Romance Series)

On the Barnes and Noble site, this book is the only one I got to come up on the Product list. When I went into "Velda Johnston", I found that books were listed as "Lynn Johnston, by Velda Johnston," and then there was one which had Charles Schulz tacked on, too! (Lynn Johnston did the comic book strip, "For Better or Worse"). Poor Velda!

Surprisingly, one came up as a NookBook - it doesn't sound like her usual mysteries, but it might be worth a read:

House of Illusion

House of Illusion

Overview

Three young women work at Madame Theraux's luxurious brothel in Paris of 1870. Jeanne-Marie, a young, widowed French peasant with a child to support, serves caviar and champaign at Madame Theraux's soirees. Dianne Gautier, a wealthy English heiress in disguise, has her own twisted reasons for working at Madame Theraux's. Maggie MacNeil, from a sordid background in New York's Hell's Kitchen, runs away to Paris only to find she must sell her body at this establishment to support herself.

Set amidst the impending Prussian invasion and blockade of Paris--followed by the conservative French faction's ruthless slaughter of Parisians--the lives and loves of these three women are chronicled in this wonderful tale of lust, war, courage, and love.

Re: What are you reading right now?

There are a LOT of Velda Johnston books available through B&N's Marketplace - they don't show cover images, though. The prices range from very inexpensive to the price of a new hardcover book.

I found this bio online - no mention of a connection to the Canadian author Lynn Johnston, but if you Google "Velda Johnston" their names are frequently linked. I think it's a glitch.

BIO

VELDA JOHNSTON, who was raised and educated in California, now lives in New York. She and her husband divide their time between an apartment in Manhattan and a nineteenth-century house on eastern Long Island. Miss Johnston sold her first short story while still in high school. Since then her work, both fiction and nonfiction, has appeared in scores of magazines here and abroad. Masquerade in Venice is her eleventh novel of suspense. (1973)

Well, I went back to Barnes and Noble's home page and typed in Velda Johnston's name. It's true, there are a lot of titles of her books that don't have available images. However, I did have to scroll down through several rows of books to get to hers, as the there are a couple of books that are obviously Velda's, then there's the ones that are Lynn Johnston's, and then there's the section that is primarily Velda Johnston books.  I guess I should have made it clearer that most of those books aren't accessible to me, as I prefer to have the books delivered to the local store where I go to pick up the copy(gives me an excuse to browse through the store, too, which is the main reason I like to do that). I must be shallow or picky about my books too, because I simply don't like to order a book without knowing what the cover looks like. In spite  of that old saying about "You can't judge a book by its cover," I DO think that a cover tells me a lot about whether I want to read that book or not.

Re: What are you reading right now?

Fricka - I like to buy secondhand books where I can see the covers, too. Nothing I love more than digging around library book sales, for instance. But if you're looking for a particular title, it's worth checking out the B&N Used Book Marketplace.

Re: What are you reading right now?

You are right, she does look like Erin Gray

Fricka wrote:

julestrik, I've had those Sebastian St. Cyr books on my TBR list for a while now. Thanks for reminding me of them--now I will try to actually get around to read one of them, soon.

Ryan and becke, I can't believe I've never heard of Velda Johnston before! That one cover was pretty interesting--doesn't the woman in front look exactly like Erin Gray? Except for the hair style, of course--that looks like a bad hair day from the '70's!

Anyway, I've finished reading Jane Vows Vengeance

Jane Vows Vengeance

Have to admit, I picked this book up in the library mostly on a whim, but I am so glad I did. For someone who has a background in English Literature, it's a hoot. Not only does the book have Jane as a Vampire, but she got "turned" by none other than Lord Byron, who now goes by the moniker of "Brian George"( if you know that Byron's real name was George Gordon, Lord Byron, it's even funnier). And I thought finding out that the "She who must not be named" person in the book turned out to be Charlotte Bronte was just such a hoot! I recommend this for anyone who likes a touch of the supernatural in their mysteries, mixed in with lots of wit/comedy.

Now I'm reading the next book in the Penderwick series:

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street

I've just gotten through the first few chapters so far. I found the chapter where Martin went on his first blind date particularly interesting, as there were a couple of Latin terms used which made me think Ms. Birdsall is a Harry Potter fan. Her explanation of Bellatrix as a "Woman warrior," and the term "Cruciatus" for torture were spot on for any HP reader!

I'm ready to proceed from the part where the girls met for their MOPS to decide on how to deliver their dad from blind dates.

I read them. I thought the emails throughout the books were witty, but anyone who reads J.R. Ward, Lora Leigh and the like won't be impressed with the hot stuff.

Ah, I'm not the only one who hasn't read this yet? I have had it in my hot little hands to read and I just couldn't get into it. I liked it well enough, but I just wasn't in the mood. I removed from "Currently Reading" back to the "TBR" pile for another time. I'll get to it eventually.

I happen to be reading an oldy-but-goody that I haven't read in YEARS:

Outlander (Outlander Series #1)  . I have wanted to reread this novel for a while now. It moves much quicker the second time around, and things are so funny to notice how the details play out with tied up loose ends, now that there have been SEVEN novels (when Gabaldon's original intent was to write a trilogy) and a spinoff series now numbering three.

becke and Ruth, I found that Discovery was not a very fast page turner for me. Plus I got interrupted a lot while I was trying to read it, and I basically skipped over a lot of the book to get to the ending. I'm on the fence as to whether I'll try a re-read, and until I do that, I'm not interested in reading the next book that Harkness has out now.

While I'm in confessional mode, I have to admit that I have yet to read a Diana Gabaldon book, although I've checked out a couple of her books from the library. Unfortunately for me, I chose to read some of the other books I'd checked out, and the DG book was due back before I'd had a chance to read it.I really feel that I should read at least one of Diana's books, as she's made personal appearances at the *cough* Scottsdale Mystery Bookstore*cough* several times, and there even was a limited edition sketch of one of the characters from one of her books in the store at one time. *sigh* It's just that there are so many books I want to read, but with taking care of my Mom and Dad, and working, I don't have the time.

I lot of times when I know there are - or are going to be - multiple books in a series, I'll hold off reading them until I know I'll have some free time to read them all. Hasn't happened lately!

Morning everyone.

I've read Both A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy #1) and

Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy #2)

I found them to be a historical fiction lover plus a romance plus a paranormal dream, you're right when you said it's not a fast read there are too many minute details to grasp. I didn't re-read the first when the second came out since it was only a year between books and I found the second one just as good as the first.

Outlander (Outlander Series #1)

This is still my all time favorite multi-genre series and I still haven't read them all I think I'm somewhere around six, but I will get to the rest in time.

Along with my required reading this weekend I'll be reading one of my favorite authors novels

The Renegade's Heart

it's the first in her launch of a new medieval romance series based on the The True Brides series from long ago, I can't wait to get into a true voice in the genre

then I also want to read my new release feature for 8-21

Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend

I have high hopes that maybe this will be on my monthly featured list in 2013. The premise is this- it's narrated by the imaginary friend of an autistic boy, I've already rec'd back my

Q&A from the author and he's great.

Re: What are you reading right now?

I agree with becke--that book title alone is intriguing! It's a very creative move on the part of the author, to put the book in the voice of the "imaginary friend." Not sure, Deb, whether you've actually read the book yet or getting ready to. I'd be interested in reading your interview with the author, so will you put a link in here when you've got that up on your forum or blog?

I started reading this book yesterday:

Every Last Secret

It's by Linda Rodriguez, who lives in the KC area. Since I went to grad school at KU in Lawrence, her description of her protagonist leaving the Kansas City metro area to work at a small college  in a nearby town sounded very familiar, although in the book, it's still located in Missouri. Well, I could not put the book down once I got past the first few chapters. I was trying to watch some of the close of the Olympic Games, but found that so over the top with some of the featured performers that it was not a difficult choice to go back to reading Rodriguez' book. If you like traditional mysteries that have a well developed plot line and characters, be sure to check out this book. BTW, Linda Rodriguez also has a cookbook out:

The "I Don't Know How to Cook" Book Mexican

I'm going to have to check that out!

Re: What are you reading right now?

Becke, Deb, Fricka et al regarding Outlander (Outlander Series #1)  :

This is a favorite of mine, too. I interrupted my voyage (bigger than a trip, I'd say...) this weekend on a long car trip to visit my parents in Indiana. I had just received

Alone (Detective D. D. Warren Series #1)  and around South Haven, I thought, "Eh, I'll see what this is all about." Eighty pages later, I said to myself, "I have to finish this!!!!" So I read it over the weekend between the Olympics, Cubs/Reds game and family reunion. WOW! This book moves like gang-busters! No wonder: it has fewer than 300 pages.

I'm back to reading Outlander again, while I wait to get

Hide (Detective D. D. Warren Series #2)  .
