Re: What are you reading right now?

Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist (Agatha Raisin Series #6)

I love this series!!!  I have lots of other books to read, but I think I will have to gradually buy and read these for a periodic fix of Agatha!  This one is taking place in Cyprus (where Agatha is, as usual, pursuing James), so I do miss the villagers back in Carsely.

Ryan: We seem to enjoy alot of the same type of books. I'll have to read your blog and get some more suggestions.

If you like Harlan Coben, you'll like Linwood Barclay. This book had a fascinating premise - I couldn't put it down!

After finishing this book today, I have to agree with Lisa Gardner, who calls it "one of the best thrillers of the year." WOW!

Re: What are you reading right now?

  • The Eighth Veil: A Jerusalem Mystery

The Eighth Veil by Frederick Ramsay

Library Journal

Late one night in the year 28 C.E., a young servant woman is murdered in the baths at Herod Antipas's palace. The killer escapes in a hurry, forced to leave precious items behind, including a necklace. Irritated by yet another Jerusalem incident, the ranking Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate, brings in the chief rabbi, Rabbin Gamaliel, to solve the case. Scholar Gamaliel methodically sets up his investigation, enlisting the help of the coroner, the jeweler, and the servants. He must peel away layers of deceit if he is to discover the identity of the killer...

I'm almost finished with this book. It's very engrossing, and the historical and Biblical references add to the flavoring of the book. Ramsay has come up with a clever device by making the Rabbi Gamaliel into a murder mystery sleuth. There's a lot of information about the Herodian family as well as other biblical figures like Pontius Pilate, the High Priest Caiaphus, and an upstart Rabbi who is mostly un-named in the book, but whom any Christian reader will recognize as Jesus. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical mysteries.

Ryan, did you enjoy your read of the Bess Crawford book? I just attended a Skype event from a mystery bookstore which featured both Charles and Caroline, and they talked quite a bit about the Spanish Flu epidemic, which is a prominent part of the plot line in the book, apparently.

dulcinea3, I also really enjoy reading the Agatha Raisin books. I agree, that I like the books where she's located in Carsely the best. Sorry to admit I haven't yet read the latest Agatha book, which seems to feature, um, "Long Pig" in the form of a policeman. Looking forward to getting through my TBR pile to get to it, though.

How exciting, Debbie! I think I've mentioned this to Lisa - my sister and my niece are two of her biggest fans. I won a huge basket of books and other goodies that Lisa and her sister Nancy Bush donated to the Central Ohio Fiction Writers Contest. I gave it to my niece (whose birthday was coming up) and she was THRILLED!!

Fricka, I'm only a little way into the series, as you can tell (this is the sixth).  I just 'discovered' the series almost a year ago, when I got the first two in one volume at a Border's going-out-of-business sale; it was 90% off!  So now I think I have to read them two at a time, to get my fix!  Although I miss the gang back in Carsely, I have to say that Ms. Beaton is giving a lot of information about northern Cyprus, which I knew nothing about before, so it is kind of interesting to learn about it.

Hi y'all---I'm reading several right now.  The Big Dirt Nap by Rosemary Harris, and skipping around in an anthology of short stories, Sisters in Crime 5, edited by Marilyn Wallace.  Lots of good reading there!  This is the first Harris book I've read.  So far, it's holding my interest. Happy trails from Texas! bobbi c./b.a. neal

Re: What are you reading right now?

I'm reading

Drift  right now and it's very interesting. Nothing new to report on the mystery front. I'm feeling a bit bereft without an Agatha Christie waiting for me.
