Probably a combination of what happened in the shelter, her father leaving and her mother's dying was too much for her to handle. Here's an interview that Bianca told me to read to try and get soms answers: http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/books/H
Ryan_G wrote:I agree, the sexual aspect not being explored kind of bugged me a bit. I don't think I've seen such a theme explored, or hinted at so much, and then not have it go anywhere. Trutfhfully, I'm still trying to figure out what her damage is. I'm still confused if it was the fall in the shelter or her father leaving, for me, I don't think either explanation explains her. I don't know what to think.

I just think there was a lot hinted at, that never developed. I don't know, the longer it goes since I've finished this one, the less I'm liking it.

Just finished this one myself. I know what you mean about not liking Suki but I think she is a product of her dysfunctional family. She does not act as she should and we are a little surprised at times by her behaviour but I believe the author puts those instances in and wants us to be shocked.
This is under the Acknowledgements in the back of the book: "And Gillian, whose battle is all through his book, rest in peace." Possibly these are true events that the author wrote about and maybe that would explain some of Suki's behaviour.
Don't want to spoil the ending for those who did not read the book yet. But, I believe Suki had to go back in time in order to deal with the painful events that had happen between her mother, father and mistress. The back of the book says the same thing "In this haunting debut novel, a young woman finds herself slipping back into her childhood to solve the mysteries of her dysfunctional family, along with the very idea of herself and her place in the world." I believe that's what was accomplished with the events at the end of the book.
Now I am beginning:
I too had the feeling that possibly sexual abuse was hinted to have happened to Suki in the underground area but it was never actually explained if that was it or if the events made time stand still and she finally was able to realease herself from the trauma of her childhood. Very ambiguous in that respect. I liked the book but felt as though no definite explanation was given in regards to Suki's behavior. Everything was left to our own interpretation.
I'm glad that I read it but I do have some questions for the author. I have to say that I don't like Suki as a person. She is very immature and narcissistic but I found the story interesting. I think the missing parts to tie up the story needs to be rewritten or explained better.

It was a BEAUTIFUL presentation box, wasn't it, Debbie? Well, I had to set aside what I was reading to start this one, and once I started, I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish it. It's a real blockbuster - I can totally see it being made into a movie. The pace is breathtaking, and the story has more twists than a Twizzler!

I just finished Only Couples Need Apply - visit the book link on B&N to enjoy my review (when it posts), or you can check out the Disney thread from last month.
Now I'm reading a book long-suffering on my TBR pile,
Stardust . So far, I love it. I have enjoyed everything I have ever picked up by Gaiman and I'm certain this will be no exception. I have seen the movie Stardust starring Claire Danes several times, so I look forward to drawing comparisons along the way.

Hi everyone. Taking short break from our new electronic health record. Trying to keep up on my "leisure reading" and have found some time to read books other than technical manuals and building items for upgrade.
Have read and thought it was true Steve Berry.
Have been caught up in reading preston child
and a bunch more by the duo.
Just thought I would check in and should be back in full swing sometime mid to late July

I love the vintage covers - I wish some publishers would introduce a line of mysteries with covers like this.
