Re: What are you reading right now?

I recently reread an old favorite, THE MOONSPINNERS by Mary Stewart. Now I want to reread them all! I LOV the way she writes. Her books are mysteries with just a little romance.

Finished BAD LITTLE FALLS - here's my review:

Paul Doiron is an excellent writer who takes the reader right into the setting he is writing about. The story is set in Washington County in Maine where Mike is helping a beautiful woman with a dark past and her troubled young son who is growing up in a broken home which is riddled with drug and alcohol abuse.

As Mike is deep in the middle of a murder investigation which happens during a severe snowstorm, Doiron's description of the storm makes you feel like you are also a victim of this extreme weather condition.

This is the third book in the Mike Bowditch series. I love reading about Mike (and his flawed personality) who continually grows in each book of the series. He is constantly searching for his soul mate but can't seem to get his act together. But these characteristics make him a very lovable game warden.

Read Bad Little Falls and you will not be disappointed. The book is a real page turner packed with adventure!

Re: What are you reading right now?

Reading this now - Add Product does not have a picture of the book.

The Last Coincidence (Nero Wolfe Novels by Robert Goldsborough #4)

Playboy Sparky Linville has a nasty notion of fun and games. But when he picks popular Noreen James as his unwilling playmate, the result is murder—and a case that rocks Manhattan’s trendy Upper East Side and divides the family of Lily Rowan, Noreen’s aunt. At a loss, Lily turns to dear friend Archie Goodwin, who conveys the whole to Nero Wolfe. It takes some coaxing—and the promise of a sizable fee—to distract the sedentary supersleuth from his greenhouse and groaning board. Yet once undertaken, this case fast becomes the most fascinating of his career, as the great detective is left to ponder a killer of a coincidence. (Publisher’s description).

Now reading, MURDER IS NO JOKE, a real Nero Wolfe short story by Rex Stout. I want to see how Robert Goldsborough's writing compares to Rex Stout.

The sister of a prominent dress designer tries to induce Wolfe to help her brother rid himself of a mysterious woman who seems to have undue influence over his personal and business affairs.  Wolfe and Archie soon become entangled in a murder investigation in which all the suspects have airtight alibis.  Wolfe thinks his way through a thicket of red herrings, clues, lies and motives in order to finally unmask the killer.  No tricks, stratagems or charades here---just good deductive reasoning.  This is a solid, fairly-clued story despite improbable behavior by three characters.  The transformation of "Murder is No Joke" into "Frame Up for Murder" mainly involves the dress designer's sister, Flora Gallant, whose character was both expanded and altered by Stout.
Some fans prefer the longer version, which was reprinted in Death Times Three in 1985.  I favor the shorter version and apparently so did Jacques Barzun who included "Murder is No Joke" in his 1961 anthology The Delights of Detection.  This story signaled the end of Stout's late Fifties dip in quality and began a brief renaissance lasting through 1961.

Re: What are you reading right now?

I was out of town for a week and pledged to read as much as I could. I did my best and here's what I read:

Outlander (Outlander Series #1)

Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander Series #2)

Hide (Detective D. D. Warren Series #2)

Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series #3)

Outlander is so long, I read it quickly, but it still took 3 days!
