Hurray! I broke down and bought season three on DVD - we just finished watching it before I left for New Mexico. It looks like another DVD set will be coming out in June. I don't have the patience for Netflix and I know we'll watch these episodes again, so I'll probably buy that set, too.

You aint kidding. Whoever has disc 2, send it back already! I've been waiting 3 weeks now for it!:smileymad:

Re: What's your favorite detective/mystery TV show?

All this reminiscing has got me wondering if I left any shows out.

Do any of the rest of you remember Raymond Burr in the series Ironside?

Burr played his role in a wheelchair, surrounded by a trio of young police officers who did the leg work for him.

Of course, I think someone must have mentioned Dragnet, as it's the Big Daddy to many crime dramas of today, and who could forget Jack Webb's " Just the facts, ma'am"???.

A more recent mystery series is one done by the Brits, Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, and stars Patricia Routledge, who is so hilarious as Hyacinth Bucket("It's Bouquet!") in Keeping Up Appearances. A very young Dominic Monaghan, who went on to play Meriadoc Brandybuck in The Lord of the Rings film series, is in it as her young assistant.

Last Detective - The Complete Collection

I missed that one, Tigger. My husband and I just discovered a new (old) English series called The Last Detective. The episodes kind of saunter along but the storylines are really good. I love the main character and his dog-walking friend!

Last Detective: Series 1

Well it was on AMC and not to worry; they repeat EVERYTHING. It's up for monday nights at 9pm. And it was awesome, fresh, sharp. A US remake of a Danish series and they make fantastic dark detective TV shows.

Yes, I remember Ironside, although I didn't like it nearly as much as Perry Mason, and didn't watch it much.  There was also one with a blind detective, I think it was called Longstreet or something like that, and another with a psychic detective, I believe called The Sixth Sense, with Gary Collins.  I think those were all on around the same time.

I have also watched Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, and really enjoyed it.  Such a different character from Hyacinth, but still a strong personality!  And Dominic Monaghan also went on to play the beloved character (and crack addict!) Charlie on Lost.

I had been watching Hawaii 5.0 on Monday nights, but it wasn't on last night, so I watched Castle, which I also like.  I had been going crazy each episode I've seen trying to place the actress who plays his mother, so I finally just looked it up, and find that it's Susan Sullivan, who played Greg's mother in Dharma and Greg.  Last night I had myself thinking it was Mariette Hartley!

Tonight is the second episode of Body of Proof, Dana Delany's new show.  I watched it last week, and I think it is going to be good!  She was a neurosurgeon but was in a car accident and has lingering nerve damage in her hands, so had to give that up, and is now a medical examiner.  She did not endear herself to the police detectives investigating last week's murder, as she tends to butt in and take over the investigation herself, including questioning witnesses.

I watched most of the old detective shows back in the day. When I lived in England, they didn't show many American shows. (That has changed a LOT - plus when I lived there, they only had three channels.) Anyway, out of homesickness, I started watching shows I might have skipped if I was back home: Police Woman and Starsky and Hutch, for instance.

Oh, and I forgot to mention - Susan Sullivan also starred in a soap opera, as I recall. Much as I like Nathan Fillion, she's one of the reasons I watch Castle. I love her clothes!

Aah, The Sixth Sense - I loved that show. Whatever happened to Gary Collins? He used to be in everything.

Re: What's your favorite detective/mystery TV show?

I see Gary Collins occasionally on informercials, becke. But you're right--he used to be on everything! I don't  remember "The Sixth Sense"--that must have been on ABC. For a long time, in western Kansas, all we had was two stations--CBS and NBC. I used to read TV Guide and look longingly at the list of shows we didn't get.

BTW, have any of you watched the new version of "Hawaii Five-O"? I loved the original version, with Jack Lord and James MacArthur. It's hard for me to believe that anyone else could play a role like Steve McGarrett more convincingly than Jack did. Book' em, Dan-O!:smileyvery-happy:

I never know who came from the soaps, since I've never been into watching those (other than Dark Shadows!).  I hadn't really noticed her clothes, but I do love Castle's mother's character!

I just looked up Gary Collins on wikipedia, and it seems he had a talk show for years in the 80s, and also hosted Miss America (appropriately, since he's married to Mary Ann Mobley).  Over the past few years, however, he's been in and out of trouble with the law, mostly for drunk driving.  Sad.

Since I still had wikipedia up - you're right Fricka, The Sixth Sense was on ABC!!!  Collins also starred in a series based on Born Free.

For some reason I prefer this Steve McGarrett to the orginal. No idea why that would be...

Back in the early 70s I worked at a bank and was off on Wednesdays - so once a week (Weds.) I watched The Young and the Restless. Tom Selleck was on it, back in the day. And when I was pregnant and bed-bound for awhile, I watched General Hospital. That's it! But my mom is an EXPERT on soaps - she always tells me who has been in what.

Yes, I've been watching Hawaii 5.0, even though I never watched the original series.  I came into the series a bit late, so as I understand it, this McGarrett is supposed to be the original's son, right?  I hadn't taken to Scott Caan when I've seen him in the past, but I am warming up to him as the new Dan-O; he's pretty funny.  And Daniel Dae Kim got lucky and got to stay in Hawaii following his work on Lost!

Jack Lord

Sorry, becke, I still prefer Jack Lord. That little half smile of his--wow!

Besides, that shot of the guy in his swim trunks--he doesn't even have a tatoo on his man-nipple! (Hee Hee!) I guess he could be all right for the cover of a romance novel--maybe they could C/G the tatoo.

Re: What's your favorite detective/mystery TV show?

Yes, I did see that, becke, and read your two posts in that blog as well. That's actually what I was referring to, seeing as how you like those beefcake pictures on the covers. (Smirk).

BTW, did anyone watch 39 Steps, I think it was called.??

It has been on PBS for a couple of weeks at least. I watched the very first part, where the young handsome Brit has a man come crashing into his apartment, claiming to be a spy who's been outed, and wants his help. The YHB is sceptical, until his doorbell rings, he answers, and two thugs enter. He fights one off , but when he goes to the room where the confessed spy had been, he finds him dying. When the YHB calls the police, he finds himself becoming the main suspect in the said spy's murder. Unfortunately, right after this part, I had to turn the program off, as I had to get shut-eye for my early hours at work the next morning.
