Why no reading club on this thread?

I see that lots of authors are featured here and there appear to be monthly themes - June being cozy month- but no book club reads. Why is that? I have always wanted to belong to a book club and would especially love one that was for the mystery genre. Was there anything like that at some point in the past? The General Fiction board has a monthly book club but unfortunately this month's choice didn't appeal to me.

Re: Why no reading club on this thread?

Hi Kathy,

I think there used to be a book club, although I can't remember if it was in this particular forum.  What are you reading?  Or what do you want to read?  I can be a one-lady book club if I have to be!!!

Becke is our go-to gal here; I'm sure she will chime in with the history as well as ideas and whatnot.

She writes a column and runs around to bookstores, and gardening, and signings and doing charity works on the weekend...I'm sure she will check in soon.

She's a wonderful lady and this is a very friendly place!

Hi Kathy - When the forums first started out several years ago, the original plan was to have a book club format. It never caught on - at least not on Mystery - probably because people come and go and it's hard to maintain a discussion.

Mystery has been more of a chat room for quite awhile, and several months ago B&N renamed it the Mystery Forum. I have no problem with people starting discussion threads here for particular books, but there hasn't been much participation when we've tried it in the past.

Instead, this forum focuses on introducing you to books and authors, with a variety of authors stopping in to chat with you all on a regular basis.

Check at your local "bricks and mortar" Barnes & Noble - some have book clubs that meet there.

I agree with Bear Mountain -- if you have something you want to read (and it's something I'm interested in), I don't mind a two or three person discussion.

As Becke mentioned, it's hard to get discussions going. I participated in one, but it was more of an author Q&A - and I couldn't really think of anything poignant to ask, so it was sort of a waste for me. I wish I could've participated more, because it was one of my favorite new series (Spencer Quinn's Chet the Dog series).

I also find that unless there are specific questions or topics recommended in a book to discuss, it's hard for people to actually discuss a book without a script. I'm currently reading the 11th Sookie Stackhouse novel, which - surprisingly - is considered in the mystery genre by B&N (though I'd consider it more paranormal or occult).

I just recently bought Jo Nesbo's The Snowman (a Swedish thriller) and would be more than happy to make the suggestion that we discuss that book.

i LOVE Spencer Quinn's dog series! I can hardly wait for book four.

Some of Charlaine Harris's books are definitely mystery (her Shakespeare series). Bookstores seem to shelve a lot of her other series with mystery, too, even though I would personally catagorize them as paranormal. I think there's a lot of overlap these days, since many books that are primarily other genres still have a mystery plot or subplot.

I have one of Jo Nesbo's books in my TBR pile:

The Redbreast

Sounds like fun! No need to be formal, though - any of you can start a discussion thread here whenever you like. If some of you want to talk about The Redbreast or about Spencer's books, go right ahead - I'll be sure to join you!

Re: Why no reading club on this thread?

Done. I have already bought by the Internet Jo Nesbo's The Devil's Star AND The Redbreast. They should arrive on Wednesday.

I am SO glad I could do this ! It's NOT always that Livraria CULTURA has a book that I wanna buy . In English, I mean.

I'm ready to start reading any of the 2 books anyway -- I'd have bought them anyway, so do not feel pressured to discuss them, just because I bought them. I think it'd be a good idea, though.

Let me know what you have decided, OK ?

The Redbreast has been in my TBR pile for awhile - I have so many books waiting to be read, it sometimes takes months (even years) before I get to them. I'll make sure to move this to the top of the pile before the end of this month!

Dear Becke,

You are a peach ! Do that ! I promise I'll start reading The Redbreast as soon as I get it, OK ?

You know, my  students have these VERY VERY difficult ( almost impossible ) exams here to enter a diplomatic career in Brazil ( on 11 different subjects ) and they only happen once a year ! After the English exam -- which this year is scheduled to happen on June, 26th. a Sunday -- I'll be less busy, thank GAWD !!!

Tight Hugs to you !

Pumper

P.S. I hope more people decide to buy it and read it with us !!! The more, the better ! Bear Mountain ? kathylcsw  ?

Sounds like you're entering a fascinating career, Pumpernickel. Lots of possibilities for a mystery plot in a job like yours...hmmm, maybe you'll be writing your own mysteries one of these days!

I had to laugh ! But you are right; lots of possibilities !

This week I met a former student; he has lived for 3 years in Canada and now is moving to Sarajevo ! Big change... But fortunately he is happy; this is all that counts.

I'd be nervous in Sarajevo - beautiful area; horrifying history.

Me too ! He was explaining to me that they have 3 languages there, but whoever speaks Bosnian ( spoken by the Bosniaks ) can understand the other 2, so this is the language that he is going to learn. in order to be able to speak to people who do not speak in English there.

He is a great reader too ! He sent to me, last time his mother was there, a bio on Clarice Lispector, one of our GREAT authors ( married to a diplomat, BTW ) in English. It's a very good book that I'm still reading.

We have a "What are you reading now?" thread here if you'd like to share the books you're reading with us!

Re: Why no reading club on this thread?

Hey everyone and I'm here representing an actual reading club, like kathy said in the first post we do feature a traditional book club read each month at General Fiction check out the last post in this thread or just go to the General Fiction book club here and go to the Running Talley thread

next month is a by but you could join us in August when I'll be featuring a cozy mystery, a friend of Becke's and mine Hank Phillipi Ryan and the first in her series

Prime Time (Charlotte McNally Series #1)

We'll be cross club advertising this one from General Fiction to here at mystery and even at romance so if you're a mystery, cozy or romance fan join in and join Hank because she'll be there too.

We have some really great reads after that and then in November for the piece de resistance we're featuring

Eve (Eve Duncan Series)

and yes Iris Johansen will be joining us
