Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
$2.99
In the midst of the Napoleonic Wars in 1806, most people believe magic to have long since disappeared from England – until the reclusive Mr. Norrell reveals his powers and becomes an overnight celebrity. Another practicing magician then emerges: the young and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell’s pupil, and the two join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wild, most perilous forms of magic, and he soon risks sacrificing not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything else he holds dear. Susanna Clarke's brilliant first novel is an utterly compelling epic tale of nineteenth-century England and the two magicians who, first as teacher and pupil and then as rivals, emerge to change its history.

Harter's redemption-filled debut charts the journey of prodigal daughter Samantha Dodd, a 24-year-old single mother who returns home to Stillaguamish Valley in rural Washington State after a seven-year estrangement from her family. Along with her beloved five-year-old son, TJ (the result of an affair and the reason her husband left her), Samantha arrives burdened with shame for her past sins—and afflicted by a debilitating illness. Unemployed, broke and without medical insurance, she must face her morally implacable father, a justice of the State Superior Court, whose approval has always seemed out of reach. Despite Samantha's fears, her homecoming leads to reconciliation with her nurturing mother, her "perfect" sister Lindsey (who gives voice to faith-filled messages) and her childhood friend Donnie Duncan, whose feelings for Samantha run deep. Samantha's relationship with her father, who makes the ultimate sacrifice for her, serves as the cornerstone of the novel. When Samantha's illness, a viral heart disease, becomes deadly and an anonymous stalker threatens her father, she triumphs over adversity to realize her potential for love and faith. Secular readers may find the story preachy, but the novel's traditional values will resonate with a Christian audience. (Mar. 21)

Map of Bones (Sigma Force Series)
Overview
The bestselling master of astonishing adventure James Rollins delivers his most relentlessly exciting page-turner to date—a gripping and explosive novel of an ancient conspiracy to create a terrifying new world order out of the ashes of modern civilization.
The crime is inhumanly cruel with horrific consequences both unthinkable and inevitable. During a service at a cathedral in Cologne, Germany, a band of armed intruders dressed in monks' robes unleash a nightmare of blood and terror, ruthlessly gunning down worshippers and clergy alike. The killers haven't come for the church's gold and valuable artwork, but for a priceless treasure secreted within: the preserved bones of the Three Magi who once came to pay homage to a newborn savior. As they flee the carnage they have wrought, they carry a prize that could reshape the world.
The Vatican is in turmoil, and Lieutenant Rachel Verona of Rome's carabinieri is assigned to lead the investigation. But no ordinary police organization alone can deal with the bizarre theft and massacre, and SIGMA Force—an elite covert arm of the U.S. Defense Department—is called in under the command of Grayson Pierce. New to SIGMA, Pierce assembles a crack team of scientific and Special Forces operatives to unravel the mystery of the stolen bones, and together they set out on a twisting trail through a labyrinth of clues and dark revelations that carry them to the sites of the Seven Wonders of the World—and to the doorstep of the mystical and terrifying Dragon Court.
An ancient, secret fraternity of alchemists and assassins, the master-adepts of the Dragon Court have plans for the sacred remains that will alter the future of humankind in devastating ways that only the maddest of zealots could desire—and they will let nothing and no one stand in their way. Suddenly Pierce, Verona, and the SIGMA team are the hunted as well as the hunters, forced to use every skill they possess to survive as they follow the bones to the ultimate confrontation between darkness and light—in a lost place of history where science and religion will unite to unleash a horror not seen since the beginning of time.
A masterful novel that combines the exhilarating mysticism of The Da Vinci Code with the pulse-pounding action of a Tom Clancy thriller, James Rollins's Map of Bones is destined to be a modern classic that will stand among the very best adventure tales ever written.

The Autobiography of an Execution
$1.99
Regardless of your views on the death penalty, Dow's writing will take you inside the issue in striking, intimate ways: through the complicated minds of judges, inside prisons and execution-administration chambers, and into his own home, where the toll of working on these gnarled and difficult cases is often paid. Ultimately, he shows us a world where suspense clings to every word and action, where human lives hang in the balance, and where doing the right thing is never as easy as it sounds.
Winner of the 2010 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award for Nonfiction
David R. Dow has had access to a world most of us will never experience. As a lawyer, he has represented over one hundred death-row cases. Many of his clients have died. Most were guilty. Some might have been innocent. The Autobiography of an Execution is his deeply personal story about justice, the death penalty, and a lawyer's life.
His life at paradoxical extremes: Witnessing executions and then coming home to the loving embrace of his wife and young son, who inqure about Dow's day. Waging moral battles on behalf of people who have committed abhorrent crimes. Fighting for life in America's death-penalty capital, within a criminal justice system full of indifferent and ineffectual judges. Racing against time on behalf of clients who have no more time.

Hi, everyone!
My vacation is winding to a close (alack, alas). I was able to read lots of books, although not as many as I would have liked to have read (I have quite a stockpile now because of all these eBook bargains!). But that's life, I guess. Never quite as much time as you hope for....
If you've been checking my lists regularly, you know that there's a TON of eBooks on sale right now. Perhaps you heard about Amazon's Big Deal sale ("over 900 Kindle books are on sale for $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, and $3.99 through July 27, 2011") -- well, the good news is that MOST of those same eBooks are on sale here at Barnes & Noble, too. It is the publishers, after all, who sponsor the sale titles.
So we got the usual new sale titles from Macmillan Publishing Group and Hachette Book Group (which means new offerings from St. Martin's Press, Tom Doherty [Tor/Forge], Grand Central Publishing, Little, Brown & Company, and Orbit, to name a few), but there's more. Zondervan has got a ton of eBooks on sale, so if you like religious fiction then you're really in luck. There are also some great religion and Christian inspiration books on sale, too, including several bibles.
For our mystery lovers, we've got sale eBooks from Soho Press, as well as some old classic mysteries from Open Road Publishing. Several first-in-series mysteries that were on my wishlist have shown up in this summer sale. And for the history buff, there's a number of works on sale from Oxford University Press.
We continue to have sale titles from Sourcebooks and HarperCollins, with a few new titles popping up here and there. Several of Random House's divisions also have a number of books on sale, although not every imprint seems to be participating.
I'm hopeful that we may see some of these show up in the next few days, since there were several I saw over at Amazon that I'm interested in for my nook. The two biggest publishers that we seem to be missing from our sale (that are showing up over on Amazon for their kindle books) are Rodale Press (mainly diet & exercise books) and Hay House (self-help and New Age titles). But we may see eBooks from these publishers drop in price over the new few days, too.
There are really so MANY great eBooks on sale right now, that your best bet is to check out my lists (see links below). But here are a few titles I was especially happy to see go on sale:
cheers,
Kirsty

Everything Is Going to Be Great
This book has been on my wishlist for a while at $9.99, so I was thrilled to get it for $0.99!
It got a generally positive review in the New York Times Book Review; the whole review can be read at this link (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/books/review/Eav
"Making fun of oneself is always safer than making fun of others, which is why so many travel writers do it. In this mode Shukert takes gleeful flight, abasing herself with a zeal reminiscent of another comedian-memoirist, Chelsea Handler, boldly tackling not only menstrual stains and foreskins, but also sex-trafficking and the Holocaust. In a sort of cover version of Sedaris, she mocks her own inability to speak French, titling a chapter 'I Am Not Even Washing the Underpants of Me.'"
Shukert "comes off something like the rambling lush at the bar who keeps insisting you stay for just one more — and who, spinning stories out of her 'histrionic and insufferably tiresome' life, makes you laugh."

This is one of the 20 titles that the Harper Perennial paperback imprint of HarperCollins has on sale this month at $0.99. Once upon a time, B&N would've had a special page listing them, but apparently they've quit doing that. So here we go:

B&N has been matching the price of Amazon's Kindle Daily Deal without advertising it. Would this be the best place to list it, or should there be a new topic just for this? The price is only good for 24 hours, same as Amazon.
Today's is:
by Fern Michaels
List Price: 4.25
Sale Price: .99
With her beloved mother gone, her twin sister about to be married, and no hint of Mr. Right on the horizon, Josie Dupré is lonesome. Luckily, she has her booming New Orleans catering business to keep her busy, and her fluffy white dog, Rosie, to keep her company...until an obnoxious Boxer brazenly captures Rosie's undying devotion. Even worse, the budding romance puts Josie in close proximity to the dog's owner--sexy, love 'em and leave 'em Cajun playboy, Paul Brouillette.
Paul's all for l'amour, but ever since he came into Josie's life, strange things have been happening. She hears music that isn't there, and she smells her mother's favorite cologne in an empty room. Maybe her mom's trying to send her a message...something about finding love where you least expect it...and listening to your heart.
