Free Friday selection for 2-3-2012

Winston's War

 by Michael Dobbs

Publisher: Sourcebooks

Genre: Historical Fiction

Overview

An intriguing tale of espionage and treason this is a work to enthrall." Daily Mail

Michael Dobbs' thrilling novel about the dawn of World War II, and Winston Churchill's rise to power.

It is the dawn of World War II, and Neville Chamberlain believes he has bought "peace for our time" from Adolph Hitler, who has just seized Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland. The English are alarmed by the huge German army, while the soldiers that would defend London don't even have steel helmets. For many, compromise and appeasement seem to be England's best defense.

But there are a few leaders who don't agree. Among them is Winston Churchill, who understands that the relentless march of fascism will be democracy's death knell. In October 1938, Churchill pleads his case in the press to the BBC's Guy Burgess. One of these two will become the most revered man of his time, and the other will be known as the greatest of traitors.

This stunning novel brings to life the surprising political intrigues that set the stage for World War II, and brings alive the passionate, grumpy, whiskey-drinking Winston Churchill, as he inspires his fellow countrymen to take on the world's mightiest army.

Re: Free Friday selection for 2-3-2012

Looks good, and I grabbed it.

I was momentarily suprised to see it at a three-star rating, then realized there was one real review (at 5 stars) and one no-text, anonymous 1-star rating from just today, apparently from someone who just didn't like this as the Free Friday selection and decided to respond as though they were on a kindergarten playground or something.

Man, I despair of the human race sometimes.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up.  I missed Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" as the daily deal a few weeks ago, so now I'm trying to pay closer attention.

Couples who want to improve or revive their marriages need shared experiences. As much as they can profit from the theories of marriage experts, they need to hear from ordinary couples who can say "I've been there" and have found unique and creative practical solutions to restore the vibrancy of their marriages. These original stories offer encouragement and optimism that significant changes and growth can take place in marriages at all stages and walks of life. Couples will find entertainment, instruction, and application with the brief commentary following the stories.

Finding God in the Music and Message of Hip-Hop

"From Gil-Scott Herron, Ice-T, DMX, Lil Kim, Mos Def, and Lauryn Hill to Christology, soteriology, and the role of the church, Hip-Hop Redemption is a brilliant read! Watkins's gifts as a socio-theologian and hip-hop devotee come together in a way that redeems an essential dialogue for engaging realities of the church and today's urbanized and global society."
--Ronald E. Peters, Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta

"Hip-hop deserves the theological interpretation that Watkins provides. This book should have a wide readership."

Sabine Rose from The Seer series teams up with Amber Borden from the Dead Girl series in this exciting short story by Linda Joy Singleton.

After getting kicked out of school and sent to live with her grandmother, Sabine Rose tried to ignore her troublemaking psychic abilities. All she wanted was to be a normal teen. But the spirit world has other plans for her.

By temporarily stepping into the bodies of people who are suffering, Amber navigates their daily lives and tries to fix their problems. Luckily her loyal boyfriend, Eli, has been very supportive—even during that freaky time when Amber inhabited his sister’s body.

When Sabine’s boyfriend, Dominic, loses his own body to a revenge-obsessed Dark Lifer—one of the disturbed souls who “borrow” living people’s bodies to do their dirty work—Sabine goes to Amber for help. Working together to find and free Dominic, the girls begin to unravel the Dark Lifer’s twisted plan of vengeance. But it throws them directly into the path of the troubled soul’s murderous rage . . .
