Shout Her Lovely Name (free excerpt)
by Natalie Serber
(free excerpt)
- ISBN-13: 9780544040526
- Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
- Publication date: 5/25/2012
Please enjoy a gifted e-book sampler featuring three selections from this extraordinary collection of short stories by debut author Natalie Serber.
Mothers and daughters ride the familial tide of joy, regret, loathing, and love in these stories of resilient and flawed women. In a battle between a teenage daughter and her mother, wheat bread and plain yogurt become weapons. An aimless college student, married to her much older professor, sneaks cigarettes while caring for their newborn son. On the eve of her husband’s fiftieth birthday, a pilfered fifth of rum, an unexpected tattoo, and rogue teenagers leave a woman questioning her place. And in a suite of stories, we follow capricious, ambitious single mother Ruby and her cautious, steadfast daughter Nora through their tumultuous life—stray men, stray cats, and psychedelic drugs—in 1970s California.
Gimlet-eyed and emotionally generous, achingly real and beautifully written, these unforgettable stories lay bare the connection and conflict in families. Shout Her Lovely Name heralds the arrival of a powerful new writer.

And with a group like this you should never ask, “What else can go wrong?”
A lot! Sloane begins to receive cyber threats. While Sloane uses her computer forensic skills to uncover the source of the threats, it is discovered someone is out to kill her. Can her life get more crazy?

- Publisher: Baker Publishing Group

One man's astonishing walk through the doorway of death
When a young soldier named George Ritchie landed in an Army hospital with pneumonia, he had no idea of the uncharted journey he was about to take. Days later, barely comprehending his own death, he stepped out of the physical world and entered eternity.
In this riveting and detailed story, Ritchie describes a series of "worlds" he visited--some hellish in their separation from life, some glorious in their heavenly brilliance. But overshadowing all was his longing to stay in the blazing presence of Jesus.
Stunning and memorable descriptions make this one of the most amazing accounts of life after death ever written. This glimpse into the realm beyond can change forever your understanding of the world beyond our own.

The Triumph of Grace: Grace in Africa series #3
by Kay Marshall Strom
- ISBN-13: 9781426735585
- Publisher: Abingdon Press
- Publication date: 2/1/2011
Grace in Africa is a sweeping historical three-part saga of slavery and freedom that takes the reader from an island off the west coast of Africa to Southern plantations and finally on to Canada.
All her life, Grace Winslow, the daughter of a mixed marriage between an English sea captain and an African princess, has been forbidden to ever approach Zulina, the fortress that juts out into the sea off the African coast. In book 1, when she escapes the family compound to avoid an odious betrothal, she is swept up in a slave revolt.
As the truth about Zulina unfolds, Grace begins to grasp the brutality and ferocity of the family business—the capture and trade of slaves. Held for ransom, viciously maimed by a runaway slave, and threatened with death, Grace is finally jerked into reality when her parents leave her to die rather than negotiate with the slaves. Grace sympathizes with the plight of the captives, and she is genuinely moved by the African Cabeto’s passion, determination, and willingness to sacrifice anything, including his own life, for his people’s freedom.
With much of the island in flames, and the slaves freed, Grace is abandoned by her parents. Where shall she go? Her old nursemaid Mama Muco, opens a missionary Bible that she has managed to save and points to Isaiah 61: “The Lord has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound…to give unto them garlands of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning.”
It’s a new beginning for Grace.

She Thought She Was Leaving the Rat Race Behind...
Gemologist Andie Adams is suffering a bad case of burnout in her stress-filled job in New York. So she jumps at the chance to ditch her wormy corner of the Big Apple for a home in Kentucky with her lovable but off-the-wall Aunt Weeby. After all, things should be slower paced in Kentucky--right?
Wrong. Andie reluctantly joins the Shop-Til-U-Drop Network as its newest jewelry and gemstone show host. Sparks fly between her and the know-nothing (but drop-dead gorgeous) jock they've hired as her cohost. And when Andie's job exposes her to a international investigation, the mayhem escalates during an exotic journey.
Explosions, missing gems, sabotage--life was never this exciting in New York!
Former newspaper reporter Ginny Aiken discovered books at a very early age, writing her first novel at age fifteen. She is the author of the Silver Hills Trilogy and the Deadly Décor Mysteries. A frequent speaker at women's events and writers' conferences, Ginny lives with her husband and four sons in Pennsylvania.

An Irish ex-boyfriend, a
New York newspaper editor,
a movie star, and a Hollywood agent -
the men in Phred’s life cause her nothing but trouble.
So the last thing she needs is to become one of the paparazzi.
When Dublin newspaper journalist, Phred, is dumped by her Irish boyfriend, Finbar, she runs off to New York to make a fresh start. She ends up working as a journalist for a newspaper in Manhattan.
Set in a snowy November in New York, Phred’s world is filled with romance, humour and excitement involving her attractive newspaper editor, Royce, gorgeous movie star, Bradley Goldsilver, and handsome Hollywood agent, Vaughn.
Royce sends Phred out one night to a New York movie premier. Phred is a journalist, not a photographer, but Royce wants her to go.
Her assignment is to glean a candid shot of movie star, Bradley Goldsilver, at his latest movie premier. No mean feat. Especially as every other big burly paparazzo with their eye on the money is vying for the same.
Phred, a reluctant paparazzo, does something outrageously out of character to get the photograph she needs - and ends up in the headlines herself.
Phred gives a whole new perspective to the world of the paparazzi.

You know, A3A, you can add a much clearer and more visible link by clicking on the "Add Product" button. Select "ebooks" for the category, then in the search box type the book information (In this case Angry Laura L Smith) and then click on "Add link and image". It's much cleaner than copying and pasting the link.

Ever since the ancient Greeks, financial innovation has enabled more people to purchase homes. Today is no different: in fact, responsible financial innovation is now the best tool available for "rebooting" crippled housing markets, improving their efficiency, and making housing more accessible to millions. In Fixing the Housing Market, three leading experts explain how, covering everything decision-makers should know about today’s housing and financial markets.
The authors first explain how innovative housing financial products, services and institutions evolved through the 19th century, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, and beyond -- culminating in the post-1970s era of securitization. Next, they assess housing finance systems in mature economies during and after the recent crisis, highlighting benefits and risks associated with each widely-used mortgage funding structure and product. They also carefully assess current housing finance structures in emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
Building on these insights, the authors introduce transformative financial innovations that can facilitate a more stable and sustainable financing system for housing -- providing better shelter for more people, helping the industry recover, and creating thousands of new jobs. Using these new tools, entrepreneurs, economic development specialists, and policymakers can develop practical strategies for bridging funding gaps -- raising more capital for longer terms at lower cost.

This very readable overview of the rise and transformations of medical genetics and of the eugenic impulses that have been inspired by the emerging understanding of the genetic basis of many diseases and disabilities is based on a popular nonmajors course, "Social Implications of Genetics," that Gillham gave for many years at Duke University. The book is suitable for use as a text in similar overview courses about genes and social issues or genes and disease. It gives a good overview of the developments and status of this field for a wide range of biomedical researchers, physicians, and students, especially those interested in the prospects for the new, genetics-based personalized medicine.

The unbelievable but true story of how Wil, a young, innocent Amish teen and his family, were unwittingly lured into the clutches of a smooth-talking cult leader.
Wil’s family was searching for something deeper, and what seemed at first like fresh water for a thirsty heart soon turned bitterly poisonous.
By the grace of God, Wil’s devotion to his leader, who was an excommunicated Amsihman, slowly turned to doubt. Finally, sick and tired of being manipulated, controlled, molested, and deceived, Wil made his break and
escaped his leader’s grasp. Or so he thought.
This is a disturbing story of Satan’s deceptions and a beautiful story of the power of God’s grace and deliverance.
Eye of the God
by Ariel Allison
- ISBN-13: 9781426713491
- Publisher: Abingdon Press
- Publication date: 3/1/2010
eye of the god takes the fascinating history surrounding the Hope Diamond and weaves it together with a present-day plot to steal the jewel from the Smithsonian Institute.
We follow Alex and Isaac Weld, the most lucrative jewel thieves in the world, in their quest to steal the gem, which according to legend was once the eye of a Hindu idol named Rama Sita. When it was stolen in the 17th century, it is said that the idol cursed all those who would possess it. That won’t stop the brilliant and ruthless Weld brothers.
However, they are not prepared for Dr. Abigail Mitchell, the beautiful Smithsonian Director, who has her own connection to the Hope Diamond and a deadly secret to keep. Abby committed long ago that she would not serve a god made with human hands, and the “eye of the god” is no exception. Her desire is not for wealth, but for wisdom. She seeks not power, but restoration.
When the dust settles over the last great adventure of the Hope Diamond, readers will understand the “curse” that has haunted its legacy is nothing more than the greed of evil men who bring destruction upon themselves. No god chiseled from stone can direct the fates of humankind, nor can it change the course of God’s story.
