Free Promo NOOKbook summary - December 18, 2010

I've removed the Austen-birthday promotions that expired on schedule, and I've also moved a number of titles over to my "perennial" freebie list. I've added a link to the latest version of that list at the bottom of the posting. Romance readers: three titles from Silhouette were added to the freebie list that were never on this list—I'm assuming that they're perennial but I could be wrong. Ditto for Ellora's Cave erotica titles.

This is my list of short-term promotional NOOKbooks. I'm just listing the titles, without the covers. You can mouse over the title to see the cover if you want.

I've put the publisher's name in [brackets], which might give you a clue about the content. Zondervan, Tyndale House, Thomas Nelson, and Abingdon are Christian-oriented publishers. Samhain titles tend to have adult content, and are about the only free promotional titles available to Canadians. Galaxy publishes L. Ron Hubbard's books.

Re: Some free NOOKbooks it's hard to get excited about (for me, anyway)

Just FYI:

NOOKstudy's Lining Up a Semester Abroad (non-fiction) [Sterling (B&N)]

Can't be loaded into Nookstudy or on the Nook.

Blindsided (speculative non-fiction) [Emerald Book Company]

Appears to be only the Epilogue from his book Unsung Heroes. 49 "pages" on the nook.

Makes you wonder what you can read it on, doesn't it? If you click the "Read exclusively on these devices and apps" line, you get "We're sorry. This information is not currently available."

So I tried buying it and clicking the Download button, and I get a "Technical Difficulties" pop-up. It sounds like the e-book just plain isn't available right now. Not that I was planning a semester abroad anyway. :smileytongue:

No longer free

  • The Case for Christmas (non-fiction) [Zondervan] was free for 5 days this time around. It'd been free for 14 days earlier in the month.

Now NOOKstudy's Lining Up a Semester Abroad is showing "Special Order: Ships 3-5 weeks" on the hover pop-up.

What the heck does "special order" mean for an e-book???

Valeria's Cross - free NOOKbook

[ Edited ]

Valeria's Cross [Abingdon]

Note: the Synopsis on the B&N page for this NOOKbook appears to be incorrect. Select the Editorial Reviews tab for a proper description. I've reported this on the Metadata Correction thread.

I've managed to go three days without an update. I think that's a record. I had no idea when I started this project that it'd involve almost daily updates.

Girls to the Rescue Book #1 - free NOOKbook

[ Edited ]

I managed to get this one added to my summary (above) before my editing privileges expired:

Girls to the Rescue Book #1 (age 7-12)

The cover image isn't quite correct; it's from the paperback edition, which amusingly says there isn't a NOOKbook edition.

Doug, I know others have said 'thank you' before  -- but I don't think the community can ever thank you enough for all your hard work!!!    I'm a fairly new Nook owner, who sticks with free books or library books (if I'm going to *buy* a book, I'll buy the 'real' thing - that's just my own personal preference)    So, especially for me, your lists have been an invaluable resource!!!

*THANK YOU* and have a wonderful holiday season!!!!!

Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook Christmas Menu - free SAMPLE NOOKbook

[ Edited ]

I don't normally announce samples/previews, but there might be enough interest in this one:

The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook Presents: A Magical Christmas Menu

From Books on the Knob:

I just checked and it's 15 recipes in this free version. A complete Christmas dinner, including appetizers, entree, side dishes, 5 desserts and hot chocolate, Weasley style (but probably not really for kids; this cocoa has coffee and is not only for adults, but won't help you sleep at night).

The B&N description says 16 recipes. 15, 16, whatever. :smileytongue:

Remedial Magic

   (backstory to Fairiewalker series)

Beasts and BFFs

Free Promo NOOKbook summary - December 21, 2010

I've added the Macmillan short backstories, prequels, and what appears to be a teaser, although not without reservations. I suspect that these are going to be perennials, and if A Santangelo Story does turn out to be a teaser, I'll just drop it entirely.

Crossing the Line (short story) - free NOOKbook

I suspect this one's going to be a perennial—so far, the Tor short stories have been:

Re: Free Promo NOOKbook summary - December 18, 2010

Doug-

Thank you so much for your ongoing summary list of free books.  I especially appreciate you taking the time to list the publishers, as that speeds up my selection process.  Before I discovered your thread, I spent a significant amount of time trying to find the few free "nuggets" in amongst all of the trash.  I was never very successful, but I am now reading to my heart's content!

Thanks so much!!
