Knitting for Dummies

Okay, I notced that this book was (at least for a time on Amazon) 99 cents (a price I'm willing to pay, more than willing)...so does B&N price match...can they? I am a somewhat new NOOK owner (who loves it BTW), and not really complaining all that much about book prices, just trying to be thrifty with my money (I AM on a limited income)...so while 99 cents is doable, and I'd buy that puppy in half a second, at $9.99 means that I can wait for it, you know what I mean?...Knitting for Dummies®

And yeah, I know this is a comeptior site (tried to link it to the Books on the Knob blogsite, but couldn't do that either, so just put down the web address even though you can't link it).

Honestly, I like both B&N and Amazon for different reasons, and between the two, I usually a pretty happy camper (though, at the moment kinda unhappy with Amazon trying to squeeze B&N out)...so anyhoo, just wondering if there is a price match or anything...I would appreciate it...

Funny enough, I was just looking at this also, I found the book at Kobo for $0.89, but that appears to be a mini version, which Amazon also has.  In looking around, the B&N price is closer to what other retailers are selling it for, I wonder if Amazon's price is incorrect.  It wouldn't be the first time the price on Amazon was wrong and is eventually fixed, I know folks who have purchased books at a very low price, only to have it change the next day.

B&N repeatedly as said they don't price match, and in this case, it doesn't seem feasible that they could sell a book that retails for almost $22 at $0.99 and not be losing money.

Re: Knitting for Dummies

I would definitely look around. Nook and NookColor can both read epubs and pdfs.

As a dedicated crafter, I can understand your frustration at wanting something available in digital format but that is not in a format that the nook can use. I'm not sure WHY B&N would want us to invest in the competitions ereaders just so we can FINALLY get the ebooks that we want...but those aren't decisions I'm allowed to take part in...drats....

In the meantime...there are workarounds:

Calibre can reformat unsecured ebooks in other formats into one that can be used by Nook. Secured books have to have the DRM or encryption stripped from it first before Calibre can format it for your use. Calibre is a free program that does many helpful things for your ebooks, but it does not deal with the encryption or drm issues.

THere are 3rd party apps (also free) for Calibre which will remove the drm or encryption from your purchased ebooks so that they an be reformatted for use on your Nook or Nook Color.

Admittedly, it would be a LOT easier if we could just purchase them in Nookbook form...but I refuse to buy the books in DTB form when they are available for purchase in digital form.

Of course, it's illegal to remove DRM from a book.

The 3rd party apps that do this are freestanding hackware, and are not "for Calibre" or connected with it in any way.

In Calibre, Kovid Goyal provides an invaluable service and a legal product to eReader users everywhere.  He updates it constantly (maybe TOO constantly sometimes :smileywink:) and does it all for free-will offerings.

To associate his name or his product with illegal activity is simply unacceptable.

Really...and yet when I tried to reformat a amazon ebook THAT I OWNED AND HAD PAID FOR and planned to use only for myself.........Calibre gave me a pop up saying that the drm needed to be removed before I could format it and that there were 3rd party software that would do that for me.... I'm assuming that was a direct suggestion FROM Calibre on what one needed to do.

Re: Knitting for Dummies

When I find a great Kindle deal or freebie, I download it to my Kindle for PC (free app).  I may not want to read the book on my PC, but EVENTUALLY, I hope, there will be some way to convert Kindle files to some format that will also work with my NOOK (and I've got more books on my NOOK than I can keep up with now, so I can wait!).

Some of those Kindle books become available from B&N or other nook-friendly supplier and then I delete the Kindle book.

For those who have a question, even if the price is wrong, you only pay the listed price at the time you click (on Kindle and B&N). So, if the book goes back up tomorrow, it won't affect what you pay if you buy it today.

This particular book, btw, was 99 cents for a week or two, then popped up to just over $13 for nearly two weeks and is, for now, back to 99 cents once again (all on Kindle, though).

The 99 cent edition at Kobo is about 20 pages or so, truly a mini edition.
