Shelving books

I was curious as to what labels other people were using to organize their shelves for the wide variety of nookbooks we have available here. For now I only have a few typical shelves, but I wondered if there was anything else you guys use.

I have 4 shelves

Reading

Read

To be Read

User Guides

Since the User Guide shelve shows up in both folders, I put one book into the User Guide shelf in My B&N Library and use that to get to the unshelved section.

Re: Shelving books

I haven't created any yet but I will be doing one for the classics for sure! I hope others reply. I'd love to hear how others are doing this as well.

Re: Shelving books

Mine are mostly Genre, although I have one for my favorite author.  They are:

Library (for library books)

Arthurian Legend (I have a soft-spot for retellings of the Arthur story, mostly those from a female perspective)

Fantasy

Suspense

YA  (Young Adult)

Thriller

Horror

Chick Lit

Nonfiction

Childhood Favorites

LMA (Louisa May Alcott)

Lend Me

Classics

Most of my books are on at least two shelves, sometimes three or more.  All of the LMA are on Childhood Favorites, and so are most of the Classics.

I don't read many series, but I can absolutely see the use to having series shelves as well.

Re: Shelving books

I didn't even think of having shelves by series. So far I just have nonfiction, classics, sci fi and a huge assortment of fiction waiting to be sorted. I definitely think the by series shelf idea is one I need to use!

Re: Shelving books

A few too many to list. But mostly by broad genre (classics, mystery, fantasy, etc), some specific sub-genres (Arthurian, vampires) and any series that I have more than 1 book in gets a specific series shelf (Percy Jackson, etc).

This helps jump around my library fairly quickly, as I quite often skip among several titles.

Wish shelf management was a little more refined, but it's a great start.

Re: Shelving books

I am using broad genres: Mystery/Thrillers, Scifi/Fantasy, Romance, General Fiction, Children's Books etc. I cross-reference them with a Young Adults shelf, since there are so many good YA books out there.

Re: Shelving books

I am using a NookColor, but I think the concept applies the same way mostly...

I'm curious how people manage the books they've already read. I'm vacillating on my options. Initially I was archiving them and removing them from shelves to get them out of my way. But now I'm wondering if that's what I really want to do. I did notice that when you Archive a book, it goes away from the home page and from the Library. But if it's on a shelf, its cover stays on the shelf as well as automatically going into a specially designated "Archive" shelf. So right now I'm thinking I'll archive but leave it on the shelf. I dunno....

But I am interested in how you all are doing it. I see some people are making their own "Read" (past tense) shelf and not archiving. Pros and cons?

Thanks

I'm a re-reader, so I'm just leaving them out there in case I want to read them again.  I don't help for the reason you asked, though.

I should just go watch the hockey game.  (The old one, since the new one is going to be on at 8PM.)

Although I have a "read" shelf, I still archive a lot of books.  There are some I will leave on the device and that shelf is also for the My Documents folder where archiving isn't an option.  But since I have a Nook 3G, I pretty much have access to my archived books anytime I want, so it isn't a problem to get an archived book back if I want it.  The My Documents section, not so easy, hence the "read" shelf.

Now if they only had a shelf where I could put the books that "I'd rather my mom didn't see" on it and hid it and the books, I'd be really happy. :smileyvery-happy:

OK so when you archive them, do you remove them from other shelves they may have been on, or do you leave them (their covers, actually) there?

I have a Nook, not a NookColor so once I tap "Hide Archive" all the archived books disappear.  I have no idea if they retain their shelf or not as I haven't tried it.

Re: Shelving books

Home page . . .

  • I use the home page for books I'm currently reading, the next book I will read, and the next 4 books I will read.  The currently reading book cover is pinched to a larger size and moved off the shelf onto the upper area.  The next book to read is also in this upper area but smaller than current one.  The next four books I want to read are on the bottom shelf.  I like seeing the home page and book covers when I open the CNook so when I stop reading I return to the home page each time.  Then I only have to tap the current book to begin reading.

Shelves . . .

  • My first shelf is for "Samples" of books.  The banding is not always accurate it seems so putting the samples on a seperate shelf helps me keep track of what are samples.
  • Next shelf is for Pre-ordered books
  • Next I have shelves by author for those I read constantly or have series book sets (more than 4 books in a set)
  • Next is a "True Crimes" shelf
  • Next is a Misc Books shelf for nook manuals and other non-pleasure reading materials/books (TIP - I made name of the shelf:  XMisc Books  so that it would put this shelf near the bottom of the list when shelves were arranges by title.
  • Last is the Archives shelf

I archive books after reading them but them also add a copy to the appropriate shelf.  This helps me to keep track of what books in a series or by author that I have previously read.  Previously I have not put books on shelves till after reading them, using the library to find a new book to start.  I'm not sure but think I might just put all books on shelves and forget using the library section?

Any ideas/suggestions welcome!!!!

Have a great day!

Teri

Ah ... among other things, mothers have eyes in the back of their heads; supersonic senses for hearing, smell, taste and touch; ESP and the ability to read minds; and don't need a clock to tell time ... you didn't know that? :smileyhappy:

Re: Shelving books

I don't do genres or authors, I just have:

Reading Now (there's one book on that shelf at any given time)

To Read

Unfinished

Samples

I should make an archive or "Read" shelf for non-BN books.  I do archive every BN book after I've read it.
