Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

Not so much a correction as a request -- can B&N ask the publisher to add cover art for Peter F. Hamilton's The Neutronium Alchemist?

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Neutronium-Alchemist/Peter-F-Hamilton/e/9780316086561/?itm=8&US...

It's the middle book of a trilogy, and both the 1st & 3rd books have (very similar) cover art.  A minor peeve I realize, but on such details are actual purchases based.

Thanks!

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Portrait-of-the-Artist-as-a-Young-Man-and-Dubliners/James-Joyce/e/9...

ISBN: 1411433688

The short story "A Mother" in Dubliners in filled with numerous typos and spelling mistakes.  It seems like the only story so far that has mistakes.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

Title: The Book of Basketball

ISBN: 0345513118

The Book of Basketball

Mostly this book is okay (a couple minor formatting issues, but nothing big), but the problem that I've noticed is that the author uses a lot of footnotes, and when the footnote is included in a table, the nook will not let you see it.

For example (this has happened twice so far), footnote 40 in chapter 5 is located in a table, and you can not select it. When you go to the end of the chapter, where all the footnotes are, the list goes from 39 to 41.

I can understand not being able to select the footnote, since the number is basically showing up in a picture, but the footnote should at least be available at the end of the chapter with the rest of them.

This also happened in the table in chapter 3. It might happen again later in the book, but I'm only on chapter 5.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

The following book:

Title:  Praying the Names of God

Author:  Ann Spangler

ISBN:  0-310-30917-4

Issue:  At the beginning of each chapter is a daily prayer guide.  On my Nook it appears twice (duplicated), and often the first sentence of the normal paragraph after that is cut off.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

I apologize if I missed it in 10 pages of posts, but is there any evidence that anyone is reading these, or acting on them?

My addition:

My MobileReference edition of Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" has the following table of contents:

p.704 Volume 1

p.3 Volume 2

p.3205 Volume 3

Volume 1 contains the Introduction, and the prefaces, and starts on page 704.

This strikes me as not right.

Re: The Nooks Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

I do not have the ISBN number, but the e-book is Stephen Hunter's "I, Sniper".  I cracked up when I started reading the book, because the cover page reads:  "I, Snipper".  Really - it is the only wording on the page and it could not help but be noticed.  The problem is that when a major mistake like this is made, it changes the whole mindset you have when you start a book, just like major grammar and spelling errors in the rest of the book.  When I run across an error that should have been obvious if someone was actually editing the book, instead of using spell check, it throws me out of the story and the error ruins the experience for me.  One or two I can deal with, but e-books, hard and soft cover books are all having the same problem.  I am with another person who commented - why are we, the readers, supposed to do the editing work.  We buy a product that is defective and cannot return it.  If we were dealing with anything other than a book, we could return it and get our money back.  I have a little OCD thing with this, I know, because I have written numerous publishers about this, but the situation does not improve and I have noticed that some authors seem to have more problems in this vein than others.  Do they have better editors?  What is the reason when the books come from the same publishing houses?  This problem needs to get better.  I won't stop buying books, but I do find that my respect for publishers and some writers withers more and more as the problem persists.  I just want what I pay for - the ability to be in another world when I am reading a book, without unnecessary distractions.  The great American work ethic is shriveling!

The Bible Unearthed

9780743223386

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/product.aspx?ean=9780743223386

Almost every instance of a number or an italicized word has had the white space around it completely stripped out, resulting in long, misspelled words.

See "1 and 2 Samuel" rendered "1and2Samuel" on page 17.

Thank you.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

I posted this in another thread, but this particular ebook continually crashed my NookColor and my Nook for PC app. I got a refund, but in the interest of fixing it:

The Twilight Saga Complete Collection

9780316182935

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/product.aspx?ean=9780316182935

No page number to report - just try to open it with Nook for PC and you should immediately get a crash of the application.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

The first page cover on this book is stretched completely out of proportion - the result is extremely pixelated and ugly.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

Also, thanks for this thread. I *AM* annoyed that we readers are having to do this (c'mon, publishers!), but I *DO* appreciate B&N taking initiative to fix these issues.

To add to my "cheer" for B&N: it seems like they really are taking steps to fix things; I alerted them to some missing text in an ebook a few weeks ago, and while I never heard back from them (BAD), when I pulled up the book to report the error in this thread, I noticed that the problem had been corrected (GOOD).

So all that to say:

- 100 for understaffed quality control

- 10 for understaffed customer service

+ 50 for cleaning up publisher errors

+ 75 for transparency by doing all this in a public forum so that customers know they aren't alone and they're not being ignored.

Thanks.

Zombie Survival Guide

9781400050802

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/product.aspx?ean=9781400050802

Page 31, under the picture of the machete, the heading for that section completely overlaps the text, with the end result that both are illegible. Thanks.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

Also in the Zombie Survival Guide, there appears to be an error on page 74 - on the Smallest Text setting with the Smallest Margins on the Nook Color, pge 74 takes up 3 "pages" on the nook, but the last two "pages" consist of a single line of text and blank space. Formatting error of some kind. Thanks.

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

And also ALSO in the Zombie Survival Guide (wow, we're tearing through this book tonight):

Page 100: "Every member should carry: <UNINTELLIGIBLE>"

It's another instance of two pieces of text superimposed and becoming illegible.

What's WEIRD is that this is the book that I mentioned earlier as having been corrected... It's like when they fixed the missing text I pointed out, they broke a bunch of other pages. :smileysad:

Re: The NOOKbook Correction Thread (Meta-data/Formatting)

[ Edited ]

Please scan through previous postings to see how to format your listing for a book. Also read the intro message.

Also, it helps to NOT submit a cover because the message can then be more easily copied and pasted into a message to the publisher by whomever is maintaining this list.

And do bear in mind the OT (off topic) portion. This is for submitting errors found in e-books and not a place to post rants.
