Tor Book with DRM

I just purchased a Tor Book which had this in the description: "At the publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied." I went to my Nook library here on the website, downloaded a copy, tried to open it in something other than the Nook app (first, ADE and then Calibre). No luck because it DOES have DRM.

Looks like they've added the DRM-free message to all the Tor Books descriptions, but it seems they still actually have DRM. Anyone able to get a Tor Book from BN which was DRM-free (as they are suppose to be now)?

Re: Tor Book with DRM

[ Edited ]

I would post this is the Ask B&N thread.  Hopefully Alex will be able to remedy this.  I've looked for an official date from Tor and can't seem to find one, but if the message is there, then the title should not have DRM.  What's the title?

Did you contact B&N or the publisher? I've had that happen to me with other ebooks, but as long as I can read it on one of my devices, I haven't fussed about it. yet...:smileyhappy:

ADE won't recognize a DRM ebook if it's already been downloaded. You'll have to download it again using the "open" option, then choose ADE as the program to use to open it. ADE will download it and you can read it with ADE.

I think the OP was using ADE to check the book for DRM.  If the book did not have DRM, then it would be readable in ADE.

Re: Tor Book with DRM

I will contact B&N about it and possibly Tor too. I was curious if anyone had gotten a Tor nookbook which actually was DRM-free, since they apparantly should be now.

As keriflur said, I was using ADE to check if the ebook had B&N's type of DRM. I don't need it to be DRM-free since anything I would read it on is either a Nook or has a Nook app. However, part of the reason I chose that particular book was excitement at seeing the info about it not having DRM. I want to show my support for Tor's decision to drop DRM, but for whatever reason the files don't seem to have the DRM removed here at B&N yet.

Re: Tor Book with DRM

I just listened to a podcast with one of Tor's authors. He was saying that there had been a few glitches with some suppliers still slapping drm on the books. (I think I read another article that specifcally mentioned Amazon, but I don't remember if he mentioned any specific stores in the podcast.) He mentioned that if you are having problems with any specific books, to contact Tor. In the case of his book, Tor contacted the store and emailed drm free copies of the purchased book (when emailed proof of the purchase) to anyone who had bought the book until the stores got it sorted out.

My guess is that the retailers have an automated system that adds the drm from all the major publishers and since so far Tor is the only one of the biggies who has opted out there were some mix-ups and it didn't work quite as seamlessly as they expected.

Re: Tor Book with DRM

Was it John Scalzi? I know his book Redshirts, released at the beginning of June, was the first Tor ebook to be DRM-free. Since that happened about a month before the rest of the Tor books were schedule to drop the DRM, it's understandable that there were some glitches.

Since the book I just bought originally came out last year, I imagine it just hasn't been updated yet. Although you would think that they would remove the DRM before they changed the product description. Probably a case of the right hand not knowing what the left one is doing. Ah well, they will eventually get it straightened out. Maybe with a few helpful nudges from customers. :smileytongue:

Yes, that was it! For some reason I just could not remember who it was. It was a fairly recent podcast, and I think he said they were still having some issues, but that Tor was trying to fix the books as they find out about them. I'd probably still contact Tor in case they don't realize the book you bought still had drm. It's possible that the retailers are still trying to work through changing some of Tor's backlist.

Re: Tor Book with DRM

Just wanted to mention that all my Tor books are indeed DRM free now. Not only ones bought after they went DRM free, but the ones I bought previously as well. When I download new copies, I can open them with any epub reader. Yeah!
