Why is the nook book price higher then the paperback book price

For the last few months I have noticed several books that have nook book price is much higher then the physical book price for example

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments Series #1)   runs 9.99 for the nook and only 6.39 for the paperback

why is it that the eBook price is 30% higher did the paperbacks go on sale and the sale did not extend to the nook or was the price never adjusted when the paperback came out

This is a Simon & Schuster ebook and the price is set by the publisher. B&N can only set the price for the paper editions of this book.

Also if you were to immediately go into your local B&N to purchase & read the book you'd pay $10.99.

To get the same instant read-right-now access on your Nook, you pay $9.99.

Don't forget to add the cost (& time!!) of shipping when you're comparing adead-tree-book-at-internet-cost to the cost of an ebook.

Re: Why is the nook book price higher then the paperback book price

The publisher set the price for the paperback at $10.99. They set the price for the eBook at $9.99, a $1 less than the paperback, which is typical. B&N has provided a discount on the paperback, selling the book for $6.40. Due to the Agency Model, they are unable to provide the same sort of discount for the eBook.

Don't you just love the Agency Model?

Blame the publishers, not B&N. B&N has no control over any of this.

The answer to that is very similar to the answer to the old question "Why do dogs lick  ..."

Because they can.

Seriously, it is the only answer that makes sense.  Until everyone stops buying ebooks at those prices, the prices will never be reduced.  But this is not likely to ever happen so we have to live with it.

What is the value of anything?  Simply the intersection of what someone is willing to sell for and what someone else is willing to pay.  If you're not willing to pay that much, either someone else will and the seller gets his/her money or no one will and the seller will need to look at his/her price structure.

I refuse to spend over a set cap on any given ebook and concentrate most of my purchases below a lower cap hoping the sales data will influence pricing.

Another excellent answer!  We're on a roll here.

Seriously, if people will pay a ton for an ebook, it's their problem and loss.  Some universities charge over $50,000 a year tuition.  Same thing.  If there are people willing to pay that, I don't see that the rest of us can or should stop them.

We just have to be smart enough to see that if the product isn't worth the price, skip it.

So, if I want an ebook and find it at B&N and buy it and download it and am reading this book that I want to read within the hour without leaving my home - this is my loss?

How, exactly?  I have what I want, when I want it.

If you sit at home and don't get to read the book you want to read, when you want to read it - to me, that's your loss.

Absolutely true!  The time and convenience are worth the price to you.  If those things are not worth the money to you, you won't spend it.

I agree, with Nooksie,  if I want the book, I'll buy it and read.  I don't generally go to the movies because I think pay $10-$12 for 2-3 hours of entertainment is too much money, notto mention, if the movie is bad, it's a waste of money, I'd rather spend my money on a book.  But that's me, I don't think people who go to the movies aren't smart, it's their choice.  I choose to buy books.
