Hi-yo, Silver! Project Gutenberg has just released "The Lone Ranger Rides" by Fran Striker, creator of the character. It is a 1941 retelling of the Ranger's origin. PG, of course, has multiple formats available - some including the original illustrations. I downloaded the illustrated epub, and it looks pretty good. There's the link: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/40038

Did you know that the Lone Ranger, John Reid, was written as the great uncle of the Green Hornet, Britt Reid? Same writers, basically same plot, even down to the minority sidekick. They were created by the same radio writers.

Yep. Fran Striker and George Trendle created the Lone Ranger, the Green Hornet and Sgt. Preston of the Yukon for WXYZ Radio out of Detroit. Sgt. Preston had no family connections to the others, however. The Lone Ranger's nephew, Dan Reid Jr., was the Green Hornet's father. The Ranger's silver mine provided the fortune that ran the newspaper Britt Reid owned. The name of "John" Reid came along long after the Lone Ranger radio and tv shows ended. The only real name ever given to the Lone Ranger during the runs of those shows was his last name, Reid.
