This is an intentional restriction imposed by Apple on its content providers; in order for their apps to remain in the App Store, in app purchasing ability had to be removed. This is why you no longer find a Sony app in the store.
NOOK is working as (Apple) intended.
I suggest you not update your iPhone app because it's not supposed to be able to sell you books there, either...

I have encountered same problem within last 30 to 60 days. I know that apple changed the rules in 2011 for puchases made from in store apps (pay more or or it wont be allowed) but now I can't even make purchases on B&N direct from Safari on ipad. I now need to go to pc (ie8 or Firefox)-go to B&N .com, make purchase then go back to ipad-nook app and download.

This is not an Apple thing as others have suggested. This is a problem with BN website (not the first broblem with BN's website) and the way it interacts with Safari. You should try a few things. First, from the home screen, double press the home button. Look for Safari icon with the red X and press it, that shuts the app down. Try to buy a book again. If it still does it, try to shut the ipad completely off. Restart and see if it works.

Nallia--thought I'd ask directly- and this is off-subject-- I use the N2A card on Nook Color. How do I update my books and magazines on the N2A side with those purchased since last booting into N2A? I somehow got the original sets of books/mags, but now can't figure out how to update. Thanks.

Opening your NOOK for Android app opened syncing the library should do it if it doesn't do it automatically. If that doesn't work, try logging out of your NOOK for Android app and then logging in again. It should fix the issue, but you will have to download everything again.
