Closing a Book onI Pad

I have the Nook app on my android phone, windows laptop and now my new ipad (newbie). When I first open up the a book I see controls at the top of the page to go back to my library. However, when I switch apps and return to the Nook app those controls are gone and I cannot switch books.

What am I missing?

They only stay visible for a little while. They disappear when you're reading as well. Just tap in the center of the screen and they will come back.
