I am wondering if it is my NOOK or a common problem, but the sound quality when playing music is only mediocre, especially when compared to my iPod. There is a low level of static-like noise audible that I do not hear when the exact same files are played on my computer or iPod. Anyone else experience this?

I initially had the same problem. I wound up having to reload the music from my computer to the nook. I put the music in media player on the computer and under rip made sure the format was mp3 and changed the bit rate from 128 to 192. I then plugged in the nook to the computer and made sure it showed the usb connection, the once I had all songs in one album clicked the sync button.
Good luck

I have not noticed anything like that. Most of my songs were ripped in WMP to 128 kbs, .mp3 format.I have some music purchased from Amazon, it plays fine also.
