Re: Another update that won't install

I got it installed.  I downloaded it using Internet Explorer ranther than Firefox.  I turned off the Nook before I pluged it into my computer.  Then I copied and pasted it to the root directory and it installed.

I have no idea why this worked.  The IE file was the exact same file size as the Firefox downloads.  I know because I looked.  It makes no sense to me why it worked this time and not on the others.

I'm glad you got it to work.. but this will present a BIG problem for me.   I own a MAC.  IE is non-existant on a MAC.  So What to do?

I just want to tell you both, good luck.... We're all counting on you...

Re: Another update that won't install

I also had trouble installing the update yesterday using Firefox on our laptop.  After many frustrating attempts, I realized that there was something going on with the zip file itself.  I then tried it on our desktop computer (using Google Chrome) and the zip file was fine and I was able to drag and drop it onto the NC.

One thing I did have to do that wasn't in Barnes and Noble instructions is after dropping it on the NC and disconnecting from the computer, I completely powered down the NC and restarted it fresh.  Once it restarted, the update began automatically and only took a few minutes.

I thought the instructions say not to do that though....

Re: Another update that won't install

Aha! Telling us not to do it or not, turning it off and then turning it back on worked perfectly!

And I have a stock Nook, no SD card in place, and was using IE as my browser... So, it was none of those things. I downloaded three seperate files on two seperate days to put on my Nook. Nothing.

Turning it off and then on again was the trick - I'm installing now!

Too many replies, I've gotten confused.  You're still having issues, right?

I'm guessing you've tried this already but for completeness' sake:

1) delete the zip file from the nook

2) delete the zip file from your mac

3) download the file again

4) hook up your nook (and unlock it, as I'm sure you're aware)

5) copy the file into the root folder (this is easier to identify for me if I remove the SD card first)

6) here I get fuzzy on a mac; on a PC you should eject the USB device by clicking on the USB icon and saying 'eject'.  If you don't do this, it's possible that the transferred files won't get flushed correctly (making it corrupt).

7) unplug the nook

8) wait til it goes to sleep by itself

9) wait some more.  it should kick itself on in a couple of minutes

Does this cover what you've done so far?  If you've got a corrupted file, steps 1, 2 and potentially 6 might be important.

Don't Panic.

Yes I'm still having problems... Apparantly the pevious reply I made didn't take here at work.. heh..  I'm at work right now, however, I will be home in about 2-2 1/2 hrs to test this out..  I wish I brought the NC to work with me to update it here.

As far as the instructions, everything you've said I've done.  On #6, on a Mac the USB device shows as a drive like in windows.  However, there is a up/eject arrow next to it on the folder/device tree.

I have not rebooted the device like the others have.  I let ie sleep overnight last night and it didn't update.  I deleted the files and copied the update again, and left it home.  God willing my twin 3 year old boys don't see it and play with it, it may have updated by the time I get home.  On the upside, if they got a hold of it and damaged it, then I'll be moving my next post to the Nook Tablet section.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Another update that won't install

I tried to install the update yesterday and was too impatient so I took my Nook to the B&N store. The lady helping me said that you need to check and see what your screen timeout is set for. Because the Nook needs to "sleep" to install the update. Push the hard N button, tap settings. Set screen timeout to  2 minutes. It will do the update not matter what you have the timeout set for, but if you set it for 2 minutes it will do it a little faster. I'm not very technical so if I have this wrong please correct me my feelings will not be hurt.

Try any micro USB cord, they should all work, the special connection is only for charging, its not used in a transferring connection. Also make sure you unlock the Nook by sliding the button on the lock screen. The Nook wont be seen as a drive by your computer until you do that.

Re: Another update that won't install

Also, Hillarican may already be aware of this, but just in case:  I've seen some Macs with a default behavior with downloaded zip files that makes trouble - the web browser can automatically unzip the file.

An unzipped update won't work, the file still needs to be zipped before it's copied over.  This has led to hair-pulling in the past.

Re: Another update that won't install

Also, make sure the download name is correct. On the first nooks, you  had to delete the older download version from your computer, or the new one would rename itself to something inappropriate, and would not then install.

Alrighty then....

I didn't panic... Came home and rebooted the NC (Which still at that time did not update while in sleep mode all day long...  lazy NC...sleeping all day, can't update a simple OS...)  and after rebooting, it went back to sleep, and updated fine....

Now for the pluses and minuses...

I love the fact that my mags show a date of which edition is which..  That was sooooo needed..

I still don't like the fact that after playing a video and having to pause it in the middle, It doesn't remember the last point of time it was playing...  *sigh*  can't have everything I guess....

Re: Another update that won't install

Updated 1 CN with 1.4.1 from 1.3.0 without any issue. A second CN did not seem to recognize or execute the 1.4.1 install file with its existing 1.3.0 OS.  Power cycled the CN, no change. Contacted Nook Tech support, they suggested deleting the existing 1.4.1 frile from the CN and the PC and dowloading using IE. Did so and redownloaded the 1.4.1 install file using IE8 to a WINXP SP3 pc and the CN update was successful

GDF is apparently an abbreviation of a profane expression.

That's what I thought and I googled it, there is a GDF cord.

Re: Another update that won't install

I like the parsing of this on urbandictionary.  There are more (many more) accepted uses than I'd thought.

My favorite there, as applied to the Nook Color cord, is Go Die in a Fire, which is perhaps overdramatizing the cord electrical issues.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Another update that won't install

Mine didn't install either. I downloaded the file onto the NC twice... No go. Went through the power down, wait, restart routine several times.

Finally connected to a customer service rep... He could not help. His solution was for me to delete the .zip file from the NC and leave the wifi on overnight, for an "automatic" update overnight.

Well, that was yesterday. The overnight update didn't happen so I am still at 1.3. Not that it matters but it's the time wasted trying to get something done that should work at the first try.

Not sure what my next step will be:  Probably forget about it until it happens automatically.

There... Vented my frustrations. You all have a good day!

If you sideloaded it onto the NC (onto the internal memory, not the SDcard) and it disappeared (check using the "Library/My Files" screen), then:

  1. either something was wrong with the file (possible but not likely, especially if more than once), OR
  2. you have previously rooted your Nook (or run a different OS from the SDcard slot), and the update is not happening due to the (often inadvertent) installation of ClockworkMod Recovery.  If you have to remove ClockworkMod Recovery, details are available in other threads here.

However, if #2 does not apply to you, then what I have (often) done below, seems to work very quickly after copying the entire .ZIP file (don't open it) to the internal memory (not the SDcard):

  1. Press the power button momentarily to sleep (not power off) the device.
  2. Wait 15 seconds.
  3. Press the power button momentarily to awaken the device.
  4. Wait 15 seconds.
  5. At this point my NCs have all started the update.  If you don't see the update start (signified by auto-power off in that last 15 seconds), repeat steps #1-4 above.
  6. If that doesn't work (possibly due to something running in the background), power the device completely off.
  7. Power it back on.
  8. When it comes completely up, start over with step #1 again.  It's the "going to sleep" action that (in just a few seconds) triggers the installation of the update.

If your browser that downloaded the update .ZIP file tells you it's corrupt (and you didn't select "open file after download" or try to open it yourself), this is an example of the "let me do it for you" syndrome in some software.  Solution:  Download it again with a different browser that doesn't stick its nose into where it doesn't belong.
