Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

If you are going to try the SD way, I suggest you use this one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922324  Brian's custom is the best that I have found. I have tried another Froyo, but the market was missing. This comes with a good set of starting apps. I find it slow due to using a card, but its a lot of fun to play with, and I take the card out frequently with no adverse effects.

Some people can't see the forest for the trees!

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

@Champagne_girl, see that is what I mean, if you had problem and you are good with the computer, I know I would mess something up. I knew there would be a chance of bricking it. And even if I didn't do that, I would be afraid of doing something that I could not fix even if it was fixable.

I am in no hurry, I can wait for the up date. And just go from there.

Thanks!!

The difference is just the Android OS (operating system) version.

Eclair is the name for Android 2.1

Froyo is the name for Android 2.2

Gingerbread is the name for Android 2.3

Honeycomb is the name for Android 3.0

So, the stock NC is Eclair (2.1), the new upgrade is Froyo (2.2) and maybe someday they'll upgrade to Honeycomb (3.0), which is the Android version the Motorola Xoom runs on.

And the next one will be:

IceCream! No, I'm not kidding.

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

@vitaminbillwebb,  I am sorry for getting the thread off the topic. I just had a simple question and thought this thread was the best place to ask rather then open one. :smileysad:

But I am confused as to what you say about burning my own sd card. If I am not confident enough to burn your own microSD card, when WHY  is it bad or wrong to pay for one that is?? If I don't mind paying for something I know I can't do, or don't want the stress of doing, why is it wrong to buy one from someone who does know how???

I don't NEED to be rooted, but it would be nice. I love my NC just the way it is, but I have read so much from others who have rooted theirs and I feel I would like my NC even more if I could. And since I for not feel confident in doing so, why not pay for a sd card that is. I KNOW it is NOT going to root my NC, but it will give me more then what I have now.

But I do think I should give B&N a chance before spending the money and getting a rooted sd card.

Or maybe Ice Cream Sandwich (http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/11/android-ice-cream-sandwich/).

As I understand it, Ice Cream is supposed to be a combining of Gingerbread and Honeycomb so Android phone users will be able to get the same functionality that Honeycomb is supposed to give tablet users. Or something like that.

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

@PeterDe,  thanks. I will look into that! And sorry taking your thread off the topic, it was not my intent. Just had a question. If the update is not what I want, then I will look into Brian's Custom sd cards!! Thanks again.

There's nothing inherently wrong with buying a card that's already set up. You'll pay more for it than the card is worth, of course, which could add up if you plan to re-root each time the nook is updated. But that's a price you pay for convenience.

One real concern is that you may be paying far more than the card is worth, because a much cheaper card has been relabeled as class 6 8gb. Or even worse, there could be some seriously nasty malware included on the card.

Unless you have a trustworthy source for the cards, I'd recommend that you either skip rooting, or take the time to learn how to do it yourself.

(I'd offer pre-burnt cards myself for cost, but a) how do you know you can trust me, and b) I'm lazy. :smileyvery-happy:)

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

I purchased an 8g sd card from a guy on ebay with Froyo 2.2. It works great, but here's one major problem. It zeroed out the serial number on my NC. Thus, I cannot read books borrowed from my library anymore. Also, I cannot read the Bible I purchased from CBD. Being able to get books from the library is why I purchased the Nook in the first place. I've contacted the guy from ebay, but he had never heard of my problem... Maybe I should contact him again since it's been several weeks since my last contact.

After talking with someone from B&N, we were able to get the serial number back, but it was a 'last resort' technique that I don't want to use every time I go back and forth from Android to Nook. I'm hoping the new update will satisfy my 'apps' craving and I'll just use the memory card as extra storage.

Anyone else have the serial number issue? Any ideas how to fix it??

I've read about that on the XDA boards. You can search those boards for an answer. As a warning, make sure you search first, those guys are nice but they can be brutal if you ask a question that's been asked and answered.

Another thing with buying the imaged cards is that a lot of these guys are just looking to make a quick buck. I can't speak for everyone, and if you happen to have found someone who stands behind their stuff that's great, but most of them are doing it to make money and they don't want the hassle of being tech support. So they may help you at first, but after a while they may not answer your e-mails. The thought crossed my mind also but I won't sell cards because a) I just can't bring myself to sell something and make money off of someone else's work - the developers of these things are putting it on the Internet and giving it away for free so I don't feel right about making money off their work and b) I don't want to be tech support for people who don't know firmware from software, and who don't know the very basics of computers like how to copy files from one place to another.

Please remember that rooting can be a great thing, I personally love it and have to regrets. But we are doing something that is "off label" for lack of a better term. There is no tech support beyond the various boards, there are no official manuals, etc. You just have to read on your own and ask questions when needed.

And the post above is more proof that more issues come up after you root than when trying to write the image to a card.

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

I do trust the seller as I know people who have gotten the same thing I am wanting to get from him and have had no problems at all. And he has sold over 200 and has gotten great feed back from all.

But, that being said, I see everyones point. And even tho $37.00 is not alot of money, it is still more then I am sure the card is worth. And since I am in no real hurry, and love my NC for what it is, I am going to wait to anything until I see what B&N has to offer in the up coming update.

So thanks again for all your input on this topic even though it was off the subject matter of the thread. :smileytongue:

Re: My Froyo Upgrade Prediction.....

Coming late to this discussion, but just a warning: I bought an SD card running 2.2, also, and it worked for the most part. But it is INCREDIBLY slow, and I keep getting errors that force close applications. I got so frustrated that I just put the card away and went back to the Nook interface (which I like a lot).

I don't think you can read magazines/newspapers, either, if you completely root the Nook. For me, that's a major boo.

OK, let me try one more time!

Rooting and running Froyo from an SD card are NOT the same thing!!!!!!!!!

What rooting does is give you administrative priveleges to the OS that is running on your device.  Therefore you can have a rooted Eclair (stock OS on an NookCOlor) or you can have Froyo installed either on an Sd card or the device (technically Froyo can be rooted or not but there would be no point in installing a non-rooted Froyo version).

I do not understand what you mean my completely rooting your Nook. If you use the Autonooter method to root Eclair on your Nook you will still have the full reading capability that you are used to (newspapers, etc.). The benefit is that beacuse you have administrator priveleges you will be able to install other applications from either the Amazon (with some work) or the Android market. You will still be running at the speed you are used to as well.

Which is another reason to be careful when buying these cards on eBay. There are many problems with cards (new and empty or not). Some are gray market, some are mislabeled as to speed, some are just from cheap manufacturers. The more more I read up on this the more I'm convinced that using a high quality card that is correctly labeled as class 6 or higher is extremely important in the rooting process or in booting from the SD.
