How can you tell if the NC is updating automatically? How long should one wait for an automatic update before attempting a manual one?

A notification should pop up in the left corner for wifi update. It can take a couple weeks to get around to everyone and if by some chance when it gets to you, you are offline, it will not keep trying to update. It will come back around to you later. How long you wait is up to you. It was stated at one time by someone from B&N that the wifi update is more reliable, but things could have changed. I have never waited, but what you do is solely your choice.

Hi:
Received my update to 1.3 with no problems. Only question I have is people complaining about receiving unwanted books. I received no books that I didn't already have. What books were people receiving?

Since I was not sure if I was going to get my update sooner than later, I went to my local B&N store and asked them to help me sideload the upgrade. A very polite and knowledgeable assistant helped me out. It took them about 10 minutes to update my device. It's working fine. No problems whatsoever.
It's the best alternative, if you don't get the upgrade automatically.

Hi Deemure,
I'm running XP on a laptop. It only has two USB ports, and I had the same problem with both
ports. Seems too much of a coincidence that this occured on the same day I received the
update, as I sideload pretty frequently, which is why I question the source.

Well I got the update automagically a couple weeks ago or so. No Issues on my part except the syncing on page when I read at on my computer at work and then goto the nook isn't perfect. I think it goes by page # and words and they are pagenated differently on each machine I dunno just an assumption. I ussually stop at a chapter so its not a huge deal to remember what chapter I was on.

Hiya! But well coincidences can happen. I was connected to my pc, never had problems, suddenly my pc reported a problem with the device. The cord would no longer charge my nc and wouldn't connect to the pc. Tried a classic nook's cord and I could connect. Tried my nc's cord on another nc and it wouldn't work. It could be 1.3, but could be the cord.

When performing a manual install, after copying the file to the Nook, the Nook shuts down and then boots to the "Read Forever" screen and remains there indefinitely.

Have you tried powering off (hold the power button) and then back on?
Acer Iconia A500 (two): Android 4.0.3 rooted;; Nook Color: B&N 1.4.3 rooted
Nook Touch (two): B&N 1.2.1 rooted; Nook 1stEd/3G (two): B&N 1.7.0 rooted.
Customer loyalty is earned, not commanded or deserved, and easily lost.
Nothing is foolproof, because fools are so ingenious. Same for rooters.

This is similar to what is happening with my NC. I made the mistake of manually updating to 1.3 on Saturday morning. Mistake b/c now it freezes up and turns itself off. When I try to turn it back on it will get to the NOOK logo then turn off again. Phone support had me do a hard reset (2nd time I've had to do this since I bought it), which made matters worse. After resetting the NC updated to 1.3 automatically, then re-loaded previous purchases, however all the apps think they are books and will not open. That was right after the update on Saturday, now it just does what I said above - turns off when it gets to the logo. I haven't had time to call support again, but I would love to go back to 1.2 and leave it there. What was I thinking when I updated??

Well I've changed my mind about the samples. I got a sample of American Gods which was on my wish list, so that was okay, and it encouraged me to go ahead and buy it. (I'm sure that's the whole point, right?) But don't send me no stinkin cookbooks!!
I guess that's my point/complaint/suggestion. If I could control more things I'd be happier with the direction the product is moving: control what kind of samples I get, control which panels show up on the shopping home page (such as eliminate Steamy Romances but add mysteries, etc.) and turn off that @#$% automatic scrolling of the panels on the shopping home page. I just hate that the panels scroll right when I'm in the middle of when I'm looking at it. B&N do you hear me?? Anybody out there?? Helloooo....

I never received the 1.3 update automatically so I had to side-load it. That said, I have noticed an error when I open a book stating that I am on p. 235 on one device and pg. 290 on this one... it's a bit annoying. Other than that, I saw no enhancements. I'm a bit disappointed in this as well as Nook tech support. In order to get anything done, I have to go to the store, where the rep is very polite and accommodating. But I am still puzzled by this glitch in my library.

Since receiving the software update I have received book samples that I did not request and do not want. How can I make that stop?

When I tried to updat the 1.3 file failed to down load with out getting errors when I side loaded it. I tried to open the file with a zip reader adn it gave me an error in file. It took me 10 tries to get a good download that would not error our with the zip reader program, I then side loaded it and everting went ok after that. B&N needs to look at there doanload servers and look for faulty hadware. Some thing on their network is causing data stream errors because there are to many people complaining about download problems coming from them.

Ah, return your NookColor to B&N? (Or, never turn WiFi on. Or, root your device.)

BN1.3 seems have fixed all my wifi problems. I can connect to 802.11n at home and at work. At work we have a multipoint "n" system - previous had the connect/disconnect issue.

I also get the error when starting to read a book stating I am on one page on this device but on another page on another device. I am reading the book on only one device. I always choose the option that takes me back to where I left off. I am guessing that is a bug in 1.3.
I also have the problem that I do not go back to the last place in one of the books I am reading -- it takes me back to the title page of the book. I have taken to bookmarking where I left off so that I can get to the same place when I come back in to the book. I notice this happens when I go to read another book. If I close the book and come back to the same book without doing anything in between, then I get to my "last page read".
It would be nice if they would do smaller bug fix version for these types of things without going to a version upgrade -- say have a 1.3.1 so that we don't have to wait for 1.4 to come out a few months later.
