Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

I got the update message also...didn't get the option not to refuse.

I let the update run. It takes a LONG time, so be prepared! It didn't affect my ability to go on Netflix, though, I can still do everything as before. I'm setup with the old modify build.prop on my NC. I'd suggest restarting the NC after the update, also.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

It's no longer showing up in my updates nor will it appear in the market for me.  I'm not sure how I lost it.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

I never have been able to find it in the Market.  I tried getting it from the online Android Market and it asked for google sign in, then says that my Nook Color isn't able to run it.  I did do the build.prop fix.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

It turns out that it's been temporarily removed from the android market while some issues are fixed with the new android update.  The reviews have taken a hit because of it.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

If anyone cares, I found the updated Netflix app at the link below.  It works perfectly again :smileyhappy:

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

This does not work on my rooted (autonootered) NC 1.1.  When I try to open it a window pops up that says  there's a "problem parsing the package."  Is there a way to fix that?

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

hmm...I'm not sure how to fix that.  Do you use dropbox?  I just dropped the file into dropbox on my computer & opened it from dropbox on my nook.

Here's how to do it:

Install dropbox on pc http://www.dropbox.com/install

drag the netflix file into the dropbox folder on your computer

install the dropbox app from the android market

you will see your files in the app on your nook.  Click on the netflix file and install

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

Jbean, I think that you have to be running Nook OS 1.2 (android 2.2) to use Netflix.

If you can't see it in the marketplace, it probably doesn't matter if you use Mela's installer or the two-step install method.  I tried installing it on a rooted 1.1 at one point and didn't get it running, but I was set to update that OS anyhow, so I didn't test extensively.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

Mela08, yes, I did use dropbox, and tried 3 different downloads.  Thanks anyway!

Roustabout, I was afraid that might be the case.  On my mother's new NC with 1.2 (on which I did the manual nooter), the actual Netflix app was there in the Android market!  But after we downloaded it and tried it, there was no picture and the sound was chipmunk voices :smileyhappy:.  Not a huge deal to her though....

It's interesting how different the marketplace apps are, depending on whether you are rooted with 1.1 or 1.2.  I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't had them side by side.

Still not convinced I need to update to 1.2, as I'm pretty happy with what I've got.  Will keep watching for any new Netflix info, but it's not a must-have for me either.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

jbean, there is a fix for the chipmunk voices.

It sounds like you either need the variant APK that you already have in your dropbox or you can edit the build.prop file on the device to work with the distributed netflix.

I actually prefer the distributed netflix because updates via the market are supported and it's signed by Netflix, and for me fixing that file is very fast.

Detailed instructions on that are here:

My computer won't let me open an apk file.

Re: Netflix work around for rooted NC's

APKs aren't opened on a desktop computer.  You need to copy them to your NC and then open them with a file manager.  Most file managers know to fire up an app installer once you try to open an APK file.

They're basically installer files for Android, the extension means "Android Package"

(and if  you want to poke around inside one on a desktop PC, 7zip will open them and let you look at the insides.)

FFinally! it took about 10 collective hours over 3 days, but I got the chipmunks to go away!!! The trade off for time spent is that now I have a basic working understanding of adb wireless, and all the required software to make it happen. read through about a dozen threads, had a heck of a time getting my laptop to allow adb to install, tried a total of 6 .apk's, finally went with market app, and a total of about 6 build.prop pushes and two restores later and I am happily watching mst3k on my nook with excellent video and sound. Life is good.
