Nook Apps Cost Comparision [ Edited ]

I was curious after all the talk yesterday that most of the apps in the NOOK Shop could be gotten from the Android Market for free, so I looked all of them up.  Here is what I found:

Of the 139 apps currently in the NOOK Shop, 45 are not in the Android Market at all. Three of the apps are cheaper on B&N than anywhere else, and 28 are cheaper on the Android Market than on B&N.  Of the 28 apps that are cheaper on the Android Market, 11 of those are free.

While you may be able to get similar apps from the Android Market for free, you cannot get the majority of these particular apps for free.

The Epicurious app really got me - I had to look twice to make sure it's the same version. I think it is and can't see why they are charging for it on the NC.

Is it actually different? I'm not sure as I'm rooted and I have not updated yet but I have the Epicurious app and it's free.

This must have been a big task!  Unfortunately, the people that need to read it are probably the ones that won't!  The biggest complaint I see is over Angry Birds (which I don't understand the obsession with in the first place).  It makes sense to be angry if you were getting the same app that is free/0.99 on your phone.  If that happened, people would be mad that the app didn't take up the whole screen.  You are paying 2.99 for the HD tablet optimized version.  It fills the screen and has better resolution and no ads.  Thats what you pay for.  The same experience costs you 4.99 on IPAD, so the NC version is the cheapest option for getting a tablet optimized version of Angry Birds.  If you want it for free, then root it and stop complaining imho.

I'm not completely sure about that one either.  I had it on my phone but removed it because it was causing too many force closes.  The only real difference I saw last night when I was looking these up was that the description for the NC version says it has more recipes.  And I'm fairly certain there's no widget for the NC version like there is for the Android Market.

I don't understand all the anger regarding this update. I mean, for weeks I kept reading this board with all the comments and guesses of when the update would be here, what would be on it, etc. And now the majority of posters are complaits.

I am extremely happy with the NC. I bought it as an e-reader for my 7 year old son as an effort to make him more interested in reading. And now we have "nook time" together before we go to sleep... him with the NC and I with the 3g.

This is the cake. The update is the icing.

@Nallia -- you put a lot of time into this project. Just out of curiosity, is the Android Market the only place where these apps are available, or could they be acquired through other avenues or perhaps even the developers themselves?

I realize we aren't able to add our own apps to the nook, but just wondering what the cost comparison would be if we could add them ourselves.

And someone asked about the Epicurious app, it is different!

The market one has an ingrediant "spinner" where you can choose what you have and it gives you the recipes.

I haven't found that in the Nook version, but it does seem to have more recipes!

And as for Angry Birds, the $2.99 version is MUCH criper, Full HD quality graphics.

Still a really useless silly waste of time, but hey, I paid for it, I might as well play it right? LOL

I'm not certain one can call some of those apps. More like enhanced books which is why they're not in the Android marketplace. Also it should be pointed out that the marketplace that one gets by rooting isn't the full experience either.

I would like to add that, in my opinion, the apps that are geared toward children seem like a bargain to me, especially the book apps.  So far, I have only purchased the Peter Rabbit Pop-Up and the Dinosaur apps, but they are incredible and were actually cheaper than most of the Read To Me books on the B&N site, even though they have more features.

I look forward to trying out some of the others, but I'm waiting for some of the dust to settle as far as the gray icons goes.

While this is a very thorough comparison, it is skewed, so that the folks who don't have exposure to Android market read it like they are getting the great deal with Nook. In reality this is far from truth. Let's take Angry birds as an example. First, Android has many variations of Angry Birds - all free (even the Amazon exclusive Rio was free for quite some time before going to $0.99). Second, all these different editions scale beautifully on the Android (unlike iPad), so there is zero difference in regular edition from the so-called 'HD'.

Then there is a fact that on Android most of the applications exist in two forms: free with Ad-support and paid versions, giving the customer the choice. No such thing on the Nook.

Yet then, for most of the apps, there are several alternatives, so that choice becomes even bigger. So for many apps that were listed on this list as 'Not available on Android' there is quite a big selection, in fact with applications that are doing the same thing either as well or better then selections available from Nook.

Finally, Android Marketplace apps are not discriminatory - they install on all Android devices (unless they are explicitly marked otherwise). So the app that I buy for my phone in 99% of the cases would also work quite nicely on the tablet or on another phone with the same account. And you don't have to pay multiple times to get it to run on multiple devices. It is tied to the account, not to the device. The apps on Nook Color are tied to the account and to the Nook only. So for many it would become a choice of paying multiple times for the same apps, and it may irk some people, justifiably so.

Finally, and this is my personal pet peeve, where is the Tune In Radio? Pandora is nice, don't get me wrong. But Tune In Radio is doing so much more and the absence of it from Nook is the reason why I will go back to the rooted version.

Also the Angry Birds everyone keeps pointing in the Itunes store for 4.99 is published by Cillilingo, not Rovio. they seem to have had a falling out last year  ( http://www.pcworld.com/article/208449/angry_birds_developer_will_not_use_chillingo_again.html)

Rovio had been self publishing, ans has several HD Angry birds games out, Seasons for one, and it is only 1.99. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/angry-birds-seasons-hd/id398329664?mt=8. That iI would say is a better comparison than the over-priced and no longer publishing Chillilingo, since the Nook version is Rovio.

Not sure where you got that this is free on the Android Market. The full version costs $39.95. You have to buy it from the developer there. I have it for my phone. It's pricey but was well worth it since I had to be able to sync my contacts and calendar from Outlook and nothing else does that (that I know of).

Works great - I only hate that I have to buy it AGAIN for my NC!
