I'm pretty disappointed that the update didn't provide any enhancements to the Photo Gallery viewer, or that there are no photo gallery apps available yet.
Specifically we need the following capabilities:
1. Be able to sort photos into folders and view individual folders as slide shows.
2. Sort the order that photos appear in a slide show.
3. Be able to permanently delete the default photos that come with the nook color.
Another great enhancement would be to change the screen power down settings so that the screen is always on. This way you could use a Nook Color as a picture frame that is continuously showing a slide show.
Any developers out there who want to take this on? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for this kind of app.

Gallery viewer has always been very lame. No improvements there. Oh, after I said that wouldmn't you know they snuck on in there. The viewer no longer picks up all you thumbnails. You only see the actual photos and videos on the device. This is actually not a bad place to run you videos from now that you don;t have to deal with all the thumbnails.
than never to have loved your nook at all.

Not saying I would pay lots of $, but agree with the other comments posted in this thread. Improved viewer functionality would be VERY much appreciated. Since B&N has updated the NOOK Color for a 'richer' media experience with v1.2 - it only makes sense to improve the photo browser to be more functional.
I look forward to the update! ;-)

Bad is an understatement
* i can't slide through the photos by flicking left or right
* the slide view doesn't work at all (although this could be because i have folders there :-))
* the icons should show thumbnails of the photos
* when i go to a photo, there is no way to go back to the photo directory - it doesn't seem to be integrated into the viewer.
* docs don't seem to provide any info
On the plus side, it does allow me to place folders their and navigate to those folders, but they aren't of any real use given the other problems with the viewer.

latest fubar... so I deleted all my thumbnails to try and clean the tons images (like a pdf doc with 75 illustrations and their thumbnails).
Now I have severla hundred empty thumbnails with only a small icon. Opens up a blank page. There are NO Thumbnails at all on my NC... nowhere. Re-boot etc.
Any clues???

That's weird! I used Calibre to add images to books without images. When I side load Calibre-fixed eBooks, unnecessary thumbnail cover images are generated in one of the two thumbnail folders on NC. Before the update, I could connect my unrooted NC to my computer, select and delete the unwanted images, and they stayed gone. NC did not use them for bookshelf images. Correct covers appeared on my bookshelves with the thumbnails gone. Apparently they are just a Calibre extra. After the update, I tried to delete the unwanted cover thumbnails, but the NC keeps re-generating them every time I open Gallery. I would love to get them out of the Gallery.

I assume you had your NC attached to your computer when you deleted them? That would mean they are still in your computer recycle bin wouldn't it ? Restore them from there. Seems to me that if you delete a thumbnail that is attached to a page, it would leave the blank page.

Does Gallery work when launched directly and builds its own list of images?
I created a subdirectory under 'My Files/Pictures' on the external SD card. If I browse the directory and click on an image, Gallery displays that image but will not progress to the next image either by swiping or allowing Slideshow to run. The soft keys are very slow to respond. However, if I launch Gallery and find the exact same image, I can display that image and use the navigation features. Unfortunately, the sequence of images is neither based on filename or file creation date.

NO, files deleted from remote, network and removable sources are not put into the re-cycle bin...
AND that was not the issue... I don't want hundreds of empty thumbnails.
It's like at one point the gallery knew there were "X" images, so it now provides "slots" for "X" images.
Yes I re-booted, Yes I re-fresh the my files.
That's why I use album software now instead of the gallery app.
PITA.

MikeFS has nailed the basics. C'mon B&N (and developers et al)...there are many photog nuts out here who would like to take advantage of the NC's wonderful (for price) screen as a mini portfolio viewer. All we need, without taking the gamble of rooting, is a half decent gallery app. HELLO!! Apparently all I hear is the echo of my own voice...

Again in answer to this quest...
There are many PC & Mac album programs that generate HTML albums.
Sideload to your NC, and you'll have myriad possibilities. JALBUM.NET is most comprehensive and http://www.digicamsoft.com is easiest and has great album index page. There were a few LONG threads on how to optimize either.

I use jalbum, create theme albums (birds, insects, mammals, etc) of my photos, side load them, and that has solved it for me. (Thanks to CaptGuy for introducing me to this method)
It works, it's easy to do, and you don't have to wait for an OS update or an app.
