Well until market stuff is figured out you can always install the amazon appstore

Also titanium backup will let you reinstall all your previous backed up apps

This may be a catch-22.  If he is in honeycomb with a non-working market, how does he install Titanium?

We will eventually get market support on 1.2.  Amazon works for now, and you can install APKs directly - so this covers most users immediate needs until we have a permanant solution in place.

My Nook Color is not rooted (I had Honeycomb on a microSD card before, but no internal root), and HamNCheese's instructions worked fine.  They give you a very basic root.  If all you want is Kindle and some other apps in addition to what you get in the Nook store, go for it!  (Be sure to get Zeam Launcher if you want to find your new apps.)  If you want more functions, then wait for the Autonooter.

Many thanks to HamNCheese for this workaround.  It's all I was looking for!  And Kindle is more stable here than it was on the SD Honeycomb installation (Kindle 3.0 wouldn't work at all on that; it runs well now).  So I don't need to turn off my Nook Color if I want to switch from Nookbooks to Kindles.

If that is the case I stand corrected. Well I said I wasn't a huge techie so I must have misinterpreted.

Version 1.1a is up.  Many improvements, better compatibility, etc.  Check the link in the OP for more details.

Re: So....I rooted OS 1.2

You might try to uninstall a free app that is listed as "installed" and then re-install it.

I had Honeycomb loaded onto an SD card as well, but I never had access to any apps (from a market, not ones already included)... At the time, I didn't want to really "root" my Nook (afraid of screwing it up).. how did you get the Kindle app if you only booted from an SD card like me?

I installed Honeycomb on my SD card following the instructions I found on Android Central.  That also included Market, so I was able to get the Kindle app that way.  I had installed the Nook app, but (and this is ironic) it didn't work as well...

Re: So....I rooted OS 1.2

I am interested in rooting my nc, but don't know a thing about this. I can't even download the update, I've downloaded it 5 times and keep getting an invalid or corrupt file. After reading this board and all the issues it has created. I don't know if I want the update. Could someone steer me in th right way to do this, it has to be fool proof because I'm a fool when it comes to computors.

From checking out your link in your OP, it looks like I can install 1.1a over your first nice piece of work.  Is that the case?  (Just making sure.)  And, if so, will it affect anything I've already installed (like Kindle)?  Thanks!

Re: So....I rooted OS 1.2

Ditto what Trophy57 said. Although, I'm not a fool when it comes to computers, just old school.  :smileywink:  I chose not to update and seeing how many are unhappy and going back, I'm glad I didn't.  Not even sure B&N is going to force the update as they put a page in the shop telling me its ready.

Anyway, I bought the extended warrenty so want to do a root from an SD.  I've been to a site that was recommended and will probably root this weekend. http://quinxy.com/guides/how-to-pick-your-nook-color-operating-system-and-install-options/

Did you guys overclock?  Are there any advantages to going to the new update?  If B&N does force the update, can it be blocked?  Or is the only way to keep wifi off (I use wifi a lot on it as my grandbaby sleeps in my computer room).

Re: So....I rooted OS 1.2

Couple of questions:

1. If you use this method, what will be the procedure for removing it and autonootering when the new version of autonooter comes out - or won't it even be necessarily to autonooter if you've done this?

2. Since Market doesn't work with this where do you get apps?

3. Can someone confirm that Aldiko is still NOT working?

4. Does anyone know about Swaminathan's Nook Color apps, File Manager and Auto Shelves?

I would think so.  I've installed the full 1.01 before and gone through the exercise of installing the updates on top of that.  It should work, as long as you aren't installing 1.1 update over 1.2.

EDIT - OOPS!

I misread that.  Yes, you can install my 1.1a over B&N 1.2.  You can also install my 1.1a over my 1.0.  The Edify (installer) script cleans out the old stuff from either type of install before installing new files.

1)  This should be a non-issue.  Autonoter will write the exact same system files in the exact same places.  The applications installed (SoftKeys, Superuser, etc) are all installed in "data" - meaning you can un-install them from within Android at any time (before autonooter, after autonooter, etc.)

If, for some reason, there's an issue, I will release an "un-installer" package that simply removes the files I have installed.

Either way, it should have no effect on Autonooter.  The only difference between the two is a) the install mechanism (boot-up vs clockwork in my case) and b) they install more frameworks and stuff to get GApps and other tricky apps working.

2) You can install apps several ways now:

   a) via the browser.  This is how we are getting the Amazon app store installed.  http://www.amazon.com/app-email

   b) via ADB (not for everyone, involves installing the Android SDK.)

   c) Via apps like DropBox, Root Explorer, Astro, etc (once one of these is installed, you can "launch" the APK, which will in turn launch the Package Installer to install the app.

3)  Not sure, will have to look into this.

4) File Manager works, can you point me in the direction of Auto Shelves?

Personnally, I won't overclock UNLESS the overclock kernel works with deep-sleep and also has the benefit of under-volting the CPU.   Here's why:

1) Overclocking gives marginal gains for major battery drain.  99.9% of the time your CPU is idle.  The only real-world applications that tax your CPU to 100% are benchmarks and burn-in apps.

2) The existing overclock kernels don't do such a good job of handling the Nook Color's "deep sleep".  The reason is because the ancestry of Android:  Phones.

Phone don't ever "deep sleep."  In order to maintain contact with the radio tower, the phone has to have certain components runnng full-time.  This prevents deep sleep, which turns out to be a difference of .01% to .03% per hour (roughly) battery drain stock vs 3% to 5% on an "overclock" kernel.

The good folks at CyanogenMod have declared that 5% per hour is "good enough".  I disagree whole-heartedly.  I charge my nook about every 3 days.  Show me a ROM of theirs that can do that.

All of this might change when B&N decides to comply with the GPL license of the Linux kernel and provide the source code (as per the requirements of the GPL license.)  But until that time, it's simply not worth it IMHO.

No problem!  You've been very busy, and haven't had much sleep, I'll bet!  I went ahead, and it works fine.  In fact, some apps seem to load a little faster now.

Thanks again!

when you try to do an initial boot from the imaged SD card and get a LOADING.... screen that doesn't go away.....did i not wait long enough or does it take a long time to load (or is my image fubared).   Was trying it since my nook is waiting to reach the network for registration...i'm guessing it doesn't need registered before the sd card will boot?

Clockwork loads eventually, so long as the image on the card is not corrupt somehow.  The speed will vary depending on the class and quality of your SD card.

As for registration, I highly reccommend that you complete registration prior to rooting.  The Nook Color OS has a "first boot" procedure that may not work properly if you root before registering.

In other words, I haven't tested this scenario, but I imagine having Zeam pop up before registration is completed might be a problem.
