Update concern....not another when but a what and why

I keep seeing all these chats saying that the update will be version 1.2.  With a major overhaul predicted in the way the Nook works....wouldn't you think this would be a 2.0 worthy event or am I just used to the way other operating systems update too much?

Re: Update concern....not another when but a what and why

The question is what difference does the numbering system make? Its only a small change to the android system. When (if) the go from andoid 2,2 to another system (Froyo rtc.) thats something Different" or maybe a different browser....

All the roters are really doing (and the reason the NC doesn't brick) is accessing whats already there.....

What?  Android 2.2 is Froyo.  Am I missing something here?

Re: Update concern....not another when but a what and why

Well it's a change to the Nook app (or operating system if you like) specifically, but not a major one.  It's considered improvements and upgrades, not a whole new way to use or navigate the device.  So it's a 'point release' not a 'major' release.  It could in theory be 1.5 (with 1.2 - 1.4 being internal only testing while this big changes are implemented), but probably not based on the nook basic upgrade history numbering convention.

Even the underlying android version is a point release upgrade (2.1 to 2.2) so it doesn't really make sense to anything but the same with the nook version.

However, the biggest reason it's being called 1.2 on these forums is from a recent thread where someone had an online chat with B&N customer support, and they (B&N) referred to it as 1.2 specifically.

Has there been a date to when 1.2 maybe released?

Nothing official other that B&N's statement of 'Spring'. However the current speculation based on numerous reports and sources (read any of the many threads on here) is a possible release on Monday (25th).

Maybe I am just used to point releases being bug fixes and slight tweaks....adding a market, email push, and unlocking a lot more potential just seemed more than +.1

Re: Update concern....not another when but a what and why

They way some do that is a 1.1.1 for a bug fix etc

No I didn't say 2.2 is Froyo. I said if further up the creek they go to Froyo or whatever that would (according to the way BN is doing it make it a 2.0

Frankly I could care less what they call it as long as I have it............

The reality is not much will really change, the big change is the app market.....

They are upgrading to Froyo.  Froyo is Android 2.2.  2.3 is Gingerbread and 3.0 is Honeycomb.  Were you maybe thinking of Honeycomb instead of Froyo?

Re: Update concern....not another when but a what and why

I don't think at this point any of us knows what the version number will be.  Companies use numbering based upon their own design.  Version numbers often have less to do with any attempt to convey the magnitude of the update and sometimes more to do with marketing.

It would be somewhat confusing for a company to release v2 of their software on the first of any device since there'd be questions of device#2 got released.  So, I think they often release firmware versions that don't coincide with device number versions.  I think that in this case BN would not want to call the firmware 2.0 so it isn't confused with Android 2.1, 2.2, and so on.

I guess in the back of my mind I am thinking....underwhelmed.  As if the promised features are going to be scaled down or very lackluster.

I understand. I haven't been able to eat, sleep, or think since the 15th and the U frothing started.

Worse, everytime I sit down to read I keep flipping back to the forums and udate page looking for "news" I realized last night I'm 150 pages into my new read and haven't got a clue as to what it is I've read......................

Yes, I agree with you! Moving Android from Eclair to Froyo (2.1 to 2.2), Flash, Adobe AIR, a much-anticipated App Store, substantial bug fixes and enhancements, new e-mail reader, etc. is NOT a 1.1 to 1.2 increment.  Especially when their previous "minor fix" went from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0 (which frankly should have just been 1.0.2, but probably jumped more due to inclusion of invisible capabilities like DevMode, which never got exposed, and no one knew were there).

B&N themselves have referred to this as a "major update to the device’s firmware will offer customers access to explore exciting new applications, e-mail and many other requested features."  That's a 2.0 update if I ever saw one.  Especially when many folks have been anticipating this for 5 months now.

This is big, folks, and will get hyped a lot.  They have a huge advertising push getting ready to roll on this.  Especially since this will be THE big news for the next 6 months.  It's unlikely we'll see any other really big announcements until next fall's pre-holiday push.  This is their shot, and they're cutting loose with both barrels.  All that's left will be promises of "many more Apps to come in the App Store", and I can tell you right now where those will be coming from.

But what do I know?  I'm just a programmer, and B&N has their own mentality, which frequently makes no absolutely sense to me whatsoever.

Yes, that is correct.  And well worth pointing out.  However, that's the main reason I don't give it much credence, because it doesn't seem plausible to me.  It's more like, "well, we started with 1.0, and had an update to 1.1, so the next update should be 1.2".

In fact, I'd think it would be more of a science-experiment.  I.e., drop the v1.2 mis-nomer in a few ears, and see how quickly that (essentially bogus) info spreads across the interweb.

And, your definitive and unequivocal proclamation is based on...?  What, precisely?
