Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

I ran videos from memory (without an SD card inserted) as well as streaming MP4 files from the web:

http://www.tools4movies.com/2010/12/dvd-catalyst-4-quality-difference-between-different-profiles/

Lower bitrates reduces the issue slightly, but it is still there.

I pm'med with Jeff a bit today, and he notified me that he forwarded the information I provided to the software specialists who work on the Nook update. He also downloaded the sample files I provided in order to make it easier to troubleshoot.

I also mentioned (and linked to) the XDA post from a person who mentioned that he tried the 1.2 codecs in CM7 and found the same issue and that he reverted back to the 1.1 codecs.

Jeff was quite responsive, so I have good hopes on seeing this addressed in a timely manner.

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

Hate to go off topic...since I know this thread is about playing encoded videos on the NC. But I was wondering if this issue would be effecting flash playback. Seems pretty choppy to me. Or is this normal for flash playback on android devices with similar specs as the NC (i.e. Galaxy tab, Droid X, etc.)?

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

I just spent quite a bit of time trying all types of different formats using Cucusoft iPod Movie & Video Converter.  I was very disappointed in the quality on the NC.  I used this software all the time to convert TV programs and Movies to my iPod Touch and everything looked very clear.

Any suggestions?  Does DVD Catalyst really do anything different than the program that I am trying to use?

Thanks!

Even before the update, to have nice video on the Nook Color you needed to encode it in a certain format, birtrate and resolution. I forget the specifics, but the nice thing about DVD Catalyst software is that it contains presets for the Nook Color to make the job easier.

It wouldn't suprise me that a non Nook-specific tool produces video that plays back badly on the NC. I emphasize that before the 1.2 update, properly encoded video on the NC was beautiful, silky smooth.

Now, personally, I haven't updated to 1.2 yet. Will probably wait 'till after my trip.

I hope so.  I know a number of people are holding off on the update, waiting to see where this issue goes.

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

[ Edited ]

I don't doubt some people are having issues, but I have compared a few DVDs converted with HandBrake (0.9.5) on 1.1 and 1.2. To me, they look exactly the same. I ran the videos from the sd card, if that matters.

I pretty much went with the settings here:

http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/5531-how-using-handbrake-convert-video-nook...

More specifically:

Video

Codec: H.264

Size (pix): 720x480

Bitrate (kbps): 1000

Frame rate (fps): 29.97

Audio

Codec: aac

Sample Rate (hz): 44100

Bitrate (bps): 160000

Channel: Stereo

I guess I must be lucky, because with these settings, my videos run smooth as silk on 1.2. That was one thing I wanted to make sure of before I went with it for good.

I hope B&N fixes whatever is going on for some of you. I wonder if programs running in the background could be eating up the RAM, so to speak. I am not on wifi and do not use the built-in email program or any of the new apps for that matter.

But then, what do I know. I could be the encoder, as well. Before the update, I played with DVD Catalyst and Foxreal DVD Ripper. The results were garbage, even with the proper settings. In my situation, I'll stick with HandBrake. For a free program, it kicks butt!

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

Aliens in the Attic recorded in mp4 using the Pinnacle Video Transfer device played perfectly in Version 1.1.

After upgrade to 1.2, any attempt to play the video gets a "Sorry, this video cannot be played" error.

I would welcome the opportunity to downgrade back to 1.1

I have the device to entertain the grandkids and between the kids books and the ability to entertain them with videos, the Nook Color 1.1 was awesome.

I can't speak about other devices, but Flash video works perfectly on my Droid X and I can stream with no issues.

That can be done, you know. Read more here, for instance:

The link for 1.1 is there, as well a link that explains how to reset your device to stock. Just make sure you de-register first.

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

I asked this on another thread, but this seems to be getting more traffic, so I'll ask here, as it may help:

I looked at the build.prop file for the update.

I notice that the Dalvik Heapsize variable is now set to 64M.

That means every app can request up to 64 M to run in.

I wonder if setting that to a smaller size would help with some of the performance issues

that are being reported?  It seems like a lot of memory to set aside per application.

Default is 32 M for Android.  The Nookie Froyo and Cyanogen builds use 32M for this parameter.  If someone who's applied the root could modify this parameter and test?

Depending on how many apps you install on your Nook, you can have a lot of stuff running in the background even at startup, and especially after you've run it a few hours.

 MaluhiaKana,

Thank you so much for the detailed information regarding using Handbrake to convert video.  I followed the instructions found in your link and the video I converted looked beautiful!  I'm trying anouther one now, but I'm sure it will look as good as the first one.

http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/5531-how-using-handbrake-convert-video-nook...

For any of you out there having the same issue that I was, I would download Handbrake and follow the specific instructions before giving up on getting great quality video to play on the Nook Color.  I'm using the 1.2 updated version on the Nook Color.

Thanks!

Delete teh movie from your SD card, then copy it back from your hard drive and see if it helps. I had this happen once. Not sure if the movie file got corrupted or if it was corruption in some database, but deleting and recopying the movie solved the issue.

Well, I bought DVD Catalyst 4 and so far, everything that I have converted looks beautiful on the Nook Color.  Just thought I would let everyone know that the program worked for me!

Thanks!

What parameters or config did you use for the MP4 output? My conversion has different frame rates & resolutions and other setting that can be changed.

[ Edited ]

I too have a bunch of videos that I downloaded.  All of them are M4V files that played fine on 1.1.  Now that I upgraded to 1.2 I get the error that the video file cannot be played.  I have tried re-downloading them.  The videos are free videos that come out monthly.  I hate to think I'm now going to have to convert them all every month. :-(

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

Some people say they dont see any dif btwn 1.1 & 1.2

I wont say the movies are grainy, def not as crystal clear in 1.2 as they were in 1.1. The video/Audio sync also has a noticable lag that was not there in 1.1

Could it be a combination of certain APPS along with the codecs?

I loaded Angrybirds, Astraware Casino, Memory Test Pro, More Brain exercise and Spawn

OT: I also got the grey mag cover for the 1st time since geting my NC(June Cycle World)

Angry Birds is grey as well since the APP update

Additional apps and stuff are unlikely to be the cause of the playback issues.

Based on the user comments in this particular thread, as well as my own tests, it points to a codec issue in the new Android version.

There are mixed results, that are partially related to the settings used (lower-resolution video files (320x240) seem to have less appearant playback issues, but of course the video quality is less) as well as the personal perception of the user regarding video playback. For people who are using video on their nookcolors on a daily basis, the difference in playback performance was noticable right after installing the update, but for people who watched video on it once in a while, the issue was less appearant.

The Android version itself doesn't seem to be the cause of this, since video playback on my Droid X is flawless, however, possibly due to changes B&N made to the operating system itself to make it "NOOK" something didn't get modified correctly.

Re: VIDEO + UPDATE 1.2 = FAIL !

Could just be because I don't watch videos on my NC all that often, but I just converted the first episode of Bones to the specifications listed by MaluhiaKana and it seems to work perfectly fine (watched the first 20 minutes). Could be because I'm not "trained" to see the difference, or maybe since it's a tv dvd it's just easier to convert because it's not HD.

The only "video" (really Flash) issue I noticed it that web video seems to have a lag between the video and audio playback.

In any case, I'm sure we'll get some sort of "fix".
