I have heard all kinds of customer service horror stories so wanted to share my experience..
I went to plug in my NC and got no orange lite... when I closely looked at the connect there was a LARGE split in the cord right near the end of the sm usb connector.. wires were clearly visable.. Well called this AM to customer service and it couldn't have been a nicer interaction..
end results replacement cord will arrive in approx 5 days.. fortunately we are a 2 Nook household so will still be able charge up while we wait.
. but got me to thinking I may need to purchase a backup cord for the future..
the mini cord we use to chage is. there any generic versions of that on the market and how would I find them ???????

As far as I know there is no generic version of the NOOKColor USB cable that has the exact same pins as the original. Perhaps in the future from some third party . . . . Right now you would have to buy one from B&N.
Keep in mind that a regular micro USB cable that fits the NOOKColor will allow you to connect it to your PC for file transfers and also charge it. The thing to keep in mind is that the regular USB cable will charge your NC VERY slowly while it is asleep! What would take about 2-3 hours with the NC wall unit and its original cable would take you at least 5-6 hours (probably longer) with a computer and regular micro USB cable.
