You can either delete them or leave them. You can use Digital Editions to keep track of the loan period on each epub. It will show a status value that identifies the number of days remaining on the loan. After the loan expires you can certainly delete the entry as that does not happen automatically.

So as to not confuse I will try & be very specific.
If it is borrowed book from the library you can also return it early. To do this attach your to the computer with the USB cord. Open ADE. Go to library view. Now you need to return the book from both the ADE borrowed folder & My Nook (which should appear @ bottom of list if the Nook attached by the USB.). Go to "Borrowed" (or "All Items"). Click on the top left hand corner or the book & you will see an option to "return borrowed item." It will ask you if you want to return. Click "yes". The book will diasppear. Repeat for all the books you want to return. Next click on MyNook the book you return will still show up here. Repeat the same process. This will take the book off your Nook. It's a good idea to do this instead of just letting the book expire as nothing gets left behind. You should not have to manually delete anything. If you want to actually delete a book (non-library) repeat the process outline above in both "All Items" & "MyNook" & use the "delete" option instead of return.
You should not have to do any manual deletion with this method. However, just in case go to Computer while Nook is still attached & click on the drive letter of the Nook. All sideloaded books should show up. . in a Folder called Adobe Digital Editions. If the book is gone you have been successful. There is also another folder also called Adobe Digital Editions that has a period in front of it. This is not the one you want to look in. That folder was created when you first authorized your Nook to ADE.

Clicking 'Return Borrowed Item' may remove the item from your ADE and the Nook but I dont believe it will actually 'return' it to the library. ADE does not communicate back to the lender so the book will still be 'checked out' at the library until the lending period expires. That's a drawback, IMO. I sometimes finish a book in a couple days but there's no way to 'return' it early so the next person in line can get it.

au contraire! I have opened my library account, seen a book on my bookshelf, then go to ADE, "returned" the book, and when I refresh my bookshelf page, the book is no longer checked out. try it!

I just tried it and you're right. I stand corrected...
When I first got my Nook our library used a different lending system that did not support early returns. They switched to Overdrive several months ago which evidently does handle early returns. That's good to know since I usually finish a book before the lending period expires. I'll be sure to return them more promptly now.
