Re: Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

Ridiculous thread regarding a non-issue. All electronic devices made have a percentage, often as high as 10%, that are defective. One pister pointed out that BN's return policy is a near standard one for electronics, but the OP points merely to Amazon. Hmm, now why is that? The OP is posting here merely to gripe. When confronted with logic that offers solutions, he states he doesn't want a solution. The vast majority of users are happy with their NOOKcolors and those that have had problems generally deal with them maturely using the options available. What is the point of this thread? To tell prospective buyers that at some point the NOOKcolor can't be returned? That instead of exchanging the NC if it is broken, it's more constructive to gripe in public? Maybe they should accept returns forever, with pro-rated restocking fees that start at 15%.

Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

I agree with that statement IF you don't take the time to research the product or if you don't have the sense to know that any and all products will have a few with defects. And be aware that new products will always require updates/upgrades to address issues brought up by the early adopters.

If you did your research and find, as I did, that the nook color offers what you are looking for, Buy it.

The moral of the story then is,

Don't buy Product X if for some reason you can't or won't go through the steps to get a replacement for Product X.

BUYER BEWARE!!!

After purchasing a Nook I was surprised to discover that orders outside the US will not be filled. You have to download your order from within the physical US. Barnes & Noble customer service informed me that you can't use WI-FI to download e-books at this time outside the US. They did say they were working on this issue, but would not commit to when this issue would be resolved. No one told me I would not be able to make e-book purchases for the Nook outside the US when I bought the Nook. I am currently in Mexico traveling and cannot use my Nook one iota. I am going to ask for a full refund when I return to the States. One advantage of having an e-reader is obvious for traveling. But not if you are traveling outside the US with a Nook.

This is my 2nd attempt to respond. My 1st responce was to say  "The cause of your trbl is in bold above" Then I thought, Is this following the golden rule. (its a post I put up earlier)

So I say to you sir/madam

Sorry Nook color will not do what you need. Not sure if any of the other Ereaders sold in the US have DRM for other countrys. If you find one it would be great if you could come back and share that info.

Good luck

Actually, that's not quite true, from what i've read. If you're outside the U.S., you can still buy books so long as you have a U.S. billing address. And once they're purchased, you can download from outside the U.S.
These limitations and workarounds were (and still are) mentioned (in a very positive, upbeat fashion) on the B&N Nook Colour web-site.
You might consider using the blogs&boards' search box to find more details and examples from people who've done this.

What do you mean you can't use it one iota?  The only limit as you state it would be that you can't buy and download books to it.  But, you can still read on it, can't you?  I'm just wondering if your iota is stuck or something.

In other words, you did ZERO research before buying your Nook, because even the most superficial research discloses that you can't purchase books outside the US and, to a limited extent, Canada.  BUYER BEWARE indeed -- of spending your money before you know what you're buying!  :womanhappy:

Gee, that's really bad news, since I'll be going to Indonesia in a few weeks and I was counting on using my Nook. :smileysad:

Oh, wait!  I can read the 400 books already on my Nook!  But you're right, if I finish all 400 books in the two weeks that I'm gone, I guess I'm really screwed until I get back.  I can't figure out a way to make that B&N's fault -- wanna help me with that?  Between us, we can probably make something up. :smileywink:

Wasn't that suppose to be fixed in the 1.2 firmware upgrade?

But yep I don't get the can't use outside the U.S. - Geeze people have you heard of a bit of pre-planning with your nook? Ohh I don't know maybe buy or load a bunch of books before you go?

What is with the I can't go one or two weeks without the need to buy something from B&N?

I just don't get it I guess.

Re: Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

I just called to return my THIRD Nook Color!!! One day I turn it on, and up in the right hand corner, a funny green icon appears with a wrench on it.  That's it. black screen and this little green monster.  Is this happening to anyone else?  I have a warrenty, so they send me a new one - NO PROBLEM.  I get the mailing label (check your email - to the person who isn't getting thiers - it is a simple process!) They are friendly and polite..I wish I did not know how nice they are...I need to know when to give up and just ask for my money back. My newest Nook Color didn't last 2 weeks.

Anyone got anything on this?

Re: Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

I have owned my NC for over a year, it works wonderfully and I have never had a single problem, that being said...when the wrench appeared...were you doing anything with a SD card?  If you have had 3 NCs break on you, I think it is a rare rare case, but they are good readers and they have excellent customer service, I would just call CUstomer SUpport to see what could be done, I have heard of the wrench showing up when people try to install other software from an SD card, but thats the only time I have seen it.

[ Edited ]

This restriction applies to the B&N store. You can buy eBooks directly from other sources and from some publishers and side load the purchased ePub to your Nook Color or other Nook device.

This has a lot to do with being registered to do business in other countries and collect the local or country's taxes or other laws of that sovereign state.

If you need to buy photographic equipment that transmits RF, Radio Frequency, control codes, be real careful because the EU requires the use if different frequencies for this type of transmission that the U.S. does. Just one example of how different laws in different countries can affect you. Yes, there are photographers that regularly travel between countries with this type of electronics for their flashes and cameras.

Re: Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

B&N changed its policy a few months ago. If you have a credit card issued by an US bank you can now buy ebooks (and newspapers/magazines) worldwide. Only apps are still restricted.

Re: Buyer Beware-- Don't buy a Nook

Don't buy a nook color.  Today discovered that the SD card memory is only good to store items you buy from other sources not Barnes and Noble.  My nook color has 74% internal memory available yet will no longer install apps says not enough memory.  When called customer service they said needs to be take store and have tech partition the memory.  We live 2 hours from the nearest b and they can't tell me how to do it myself at home.   SAVE YOURSELF TROUBLE AND BUY A FIRE OR KINDLE FROM AMAZON.  AT LEAST YOU KNOW THAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AVAILABLE OVER THE PHONE.

From what I understand, to repartition it requires software that is not available to the user, so they can't tell you how to do it yourself.  Personally, I have 3 different Nooks, never had any issues with any of them.  Wouldn't have a Kindle if someone gave it to me, but hey, that's why there's more than one retailer.
