Cannot even get the update

After seeing how bad it is maybe I do not want the update.  I tried to get it and it won't update on my nook.  I actually erased & deregistered and still no update.  I have a perfect wifi connection.  So I am at a loss for what is wrong.  Other then staying on the old version I can still do everything but I just cannot update.  I followed the video and did it exactly how they said and it shows the nook.zip file in my nook when I hook it up to the computer.  Am I missing something? Does it need to be in a certain part of the nook directory?

It must be in the very TOP folder of the NookColor and not on the SD card (if you have one). And then, it doesn't update right away. You have to let it go to sleep and just walk away and leave it alone for awhile. A watched Nook never updates.

according to the files listed in my nook when i plug it into the computer the top file says adobe digital aditions. I let it sit for 12 hours and nothing happened. It doesn't work at the top or in the very top file.  Unless my top file is wrong.

The firmware file needs to be copied to the root of the NC. Do not copy it to any of the folders your see. It needs to be copied to the same location where those folders are.

Make sure that the filename was not changed when downloading. The filename needs to be exactly:

"nookcolor_1_4_1_update.zip" (could be your windows does not show the .zip extension).

After copying the file to the NC, dismount the NC in windows, and disconnect the USB cable.

Wait a few minutes, if the update does not start than reboot your NC that should trigger the update.

Started all over again.  Re-did the whole process. Waited forever.  It didn't do anything.  So I went ahead and turned it off and back on again.  Dunno what else to do.  I guess if I do not get the update I am not out anything really.

I just opened my computer area, the nook was connected, dragged and dropped the zip file into the nook, it transferred, transfer completed, ejected.  Didn't put it into any files or in any special spot, just with the folders. I think its just annoying me that I cannot figure out what part I am missing.

My computer crashed and it took me a while to get back online.

1. I downloaded the file again, to the desktop, left it there.  Didn't change the name or its file location.

2. Plugged my nook in and the computer brought up the option to open it.  There are a list of options but I opened it by clicking "files." 

3.  Once I opened it, I had all the files looking me in the face.  I copied the nook.zip from the desktop and pasted it into the main directory.  It dropped to the bottom of all the files.  I did not put it in anything nor did I move it to the top of the files. Dragging and dropping does not work.  For me it didn't.

4.  I went back to my computer.  It showed the nook drive waiting for me. So instead of ejecting it, I right clicked on the nook drive and safely removed it.  Instead of unplugging it right away I just got up and left it sitting there.  It took all of 3 minutes for it to register.

After 3 minutes my nook updated.  This is after 5 days of trying to get the file to work.

Congratulations!  It was tough going, but good for you for sticking with it.  It shouldn't have been that difficult, but at least  you were successful.  Enjoy!

Congratulations to you that it upgrated. Ater 5 attempts that included phone calls to BN I had given up. Today I was told by the BN chat person to wait for automatic upgrade. I am frustrated to say the least!

To sideload the update, you should NOT click on the nook drive once you connect it to your PC via usb. Instead of clicking on "open to view folders" when the NC connection is recognized by your PC, close the pop-up, then go to "My Computer" where you should see your C drive, Nook and sd card drive (if you have one). Simply drag and drop the downloaded file onto the nook drive without clicking on the drive to reveal any folders. Once you have completed the drag and drop, DO Not left click on the drive, because it activates the drive, and you will not be able to properly eject the tablet to start the install process.

Next, right click on the nook drive while in "my computer" to eject the tablet (nook products don't like ejecting from the windows tray), then allow your nc to go asleep, and the updating process should begin.

 If you accidentally left click on the nook drive while sideloading the update, and the file structure is revealed, click on it to close the nook files, then click on something in your c drive before right clicking to eject your NC.

Unfortunately those steps you listed did not work for me.  The way I did, got the update.  I did have to open it, my computer did not automatically open the file.  I'm sure that it's not much of a problem for others anymore.  If it is I still suggest they try the way I did it.  As ..a suggestion only.  I would not say that my way works for everyone or is the right way. By the way I am not stupid.  I was merely relating the issues I had.
