I have tried everything:
- Turning it on.
- Plugging into usb in the back of computer
- Returning Nook Color to original factory settings
- Rebooting
On the Nook I get:
USB Mode...you may now safely move files from computer to Nook.
If I go into the drives G & H and right click on properties it says "B&N Ebook Disk USB Media".
But in My Computer just shows up as Removable Disk Drive G and Removable Disk Drive H.
I have loaded ADE and it does not recognize Nook either.
HELP!

You have to slide the NOOK icon to the right to unlock the NOOKcolor. At that point, one of the drive icons will change to indicate Nook reader.

Unfortunately, that does not work.
My Nook is awake and ready to go....but on My Computer...it does not recognize it.

Try plugging the USB cable into the nook first, and then connecting it to the computer. When done, eject and then disconnect from the computer first and then the nook.
Hope this helps.

I'd try a different microUSB cable. Even if the NC charges on your cable, it doesn't mean the data lines are intact.
Non-B&N cables won't charge at the full rate (~2A), but your NC should still be recognized by the OS. I picked up a couple of cables for a Motorola Droid X for $3 on ebay...they work fine for data transfer.

On XP - the drive that says "Media" is the NC drive. That's the way it shows up on your computer. That's also what it will say in ADE.
Your computer IS recognizing the NC

I thought it was strange when my Windows 7 computer reports the nook drive as media and identifies the 16 gig card right. Before my Vista computer took the blue screen of suicide reported the Nook as a Nook.

Are there any files and folders on the usb drives. Do the drives disappear after the nook is disconnected. If so then your computer is recognizing the nook. The nook is visible to the computer as a set of removable media drives which may or may not be labled with nook in the drive label.
Drive G refers to the internal memory and Drive H refers to the added sd card. The nook doesn't appear as a special nook device. Just as a new set of removable drives.

That's what it is....a "removeable drive"
you should be able to browse those drives and/or copy files to them.
you have to register ADE before it'll do anything.

My computer recognized my NOOK originally. Then I tried connecting to my netbook and got a "power surge" disconnect message - now neither computer recognizes my NookColor - VERY frustrating. I'm wondering if something happened to the cable or my Nook. I'm able to still do just about everything on the Nook.
Please HELP!!

I had the same problem with my Nook Color. Here is how I remedied the problem.
1. Restart the computer and immediately press F8 continuously until you get to the boot menu.
2. Choose "last known good configuration" and press enter.
3. Wait for Windows to load completely.
4. Restart your computer in normal mode.
5. Connect the Nook to a USB port.
After I did all of this, my computer immediately recognized my Nook and automatically downloaded an update.
I am using Windows Vista, so I hope this will work on any Windows operating system.

Obviously there are multiple problems causing this, but I can share what mine was... I found that my wire was broken within. The black plastic exterior had detached from the part that plugs into the NookColor and inside there was a white-wrapped cord that had been severed as well. I just found this out in time for the udpate, so I am still without any new apps and waiting for a delivery of my new power kit. It's sad that it only lasted a little over 4 months and I wish they would've designed the NookColor with a different spot for the charging cord to go. I know that mine was broken from using the NookColor while charging it which resulted in the cord bending too much and eventually breaking altogether.
Hopefully everyone else can resolve their issues with a reset or simple altering of some settings, but some of you might have the same problem as me, even if the black casing of your power cord isn't broken, one of the interior cords could've snapped off like mine anyway. Good luck everyone!

I agree with the power cord. I checked with my 3 computers (2 VISTA, 1 Win7) and the same problems; first intermittent, then no recognition. On our Win7, gamer computer, I applied a little downward pressure to the plug on the nookcolor side, and it reconnected just in time for me to add some .pdf files. On every computer, losing connection begins with the USB disconnect sound, then I get a window on the nook to the effect: "DRP Files: null"...something like that. I will call in to see if the cord is under warranty - mine is about 7 months old.

With mine I thibnk it's a cord issue too. I chatted w/ BN over the weekend and they said they'd send a new cord.
What do I do when the warrantee runs out? Is the cord still so fragile? Why?Something is wrong for this to be such a problem so many months after the color came out! They need to fix it!
