Gallery, thumbnails, and not viewing some jpgs

I've been having a lot of problems with loading folders of jpgs onto the nookcolor. Seems its doesn't matter if the jpgs are in different folders, they ALL get loaded into the gallery, which makes using the gallery features for a single folder of pics useless. Also, the nook is not properly generating thumbs for all the pics. I did some experimenting, and in some cases I believe it does not like special characters in the file name. In other cases, it simply wont generate the thumbs. And, it seems, if the thumb isnt generated, you can't view the actual pic, in the gallery or from the file explorer.

Let me postscript this with the caveat that I LOVE my Nookcolor. This isn't a bitch-fest, just a bug report.

Could you try rebooting and see if that helps?

If it doesn't, if you could PM me with your findings (either the filenames of things with wierd characters) or if you would be willing to share some of the images that don't show up, I can follow up from the engineering side.

Thanks,

Re: Gallery, thumbnails, and not viewing some jpgs

I've added a number of jpgs to the Pictures folder under MyFiles. As noted by AJA, when in the Gallery, the Grid view brings up everything -- book covers, videos, etc. If I select Slide Show, the Nook color then rolls through all these images. I haven't found documentation on how to control what displays. (Sorry, I'd rather show just photos of my family and trips than of book covers). Suggestions for limiting things?

At sciencegal,

I've had the same issue, all of the thumbnails for sideloaded books and the Joan Smith books downloaded from B&N ended up in the picture gallery.

After several hours of problem solving, I finally found a way to get rid of them. First, delete all thumbnails you don't want from "Extras-Gallery".  Then hook the nook up to your computer, and go through every file on your Nookcolor that has thumbnails. The Digital Editions will have thumbnails, and so will some of the sideloaded books in My Files (even thought the covers don't show up in your Nookcolor library or shelves).  Remove all of the thumbnails, except for the ones under My Files-pictures. They will stay removed.

Re: Gallery, thumbnails, and not viewing some jpgs

I am having similar problems.  With my Nook Color the "My Media" app always displayed thumbnails for all pics and videos that I had loaded into the "My Files" area (I have installed an 8GB expansion memory card). If anything got out of sync all I had to do was cycle power and it would find and fix any discrepancies.

On my Tablet, however, the thumbnails are always screwed up.  I have icons for files that have been removed, and other videos (that play just fine if I browse to My Files/Videos and click on them there) do not have icons at all.  Then there are icons that look okay but link to a black screen either in the picture viewer or just totally blank (maybe it thinks these point to videos?)  Plus My family pictures are interspersed with little copies of book covers - I don't really want to look at little book covers but there they are.

If this worked right it would be really nice - please fix it soon!  Also if there was some way to arrange the pictures into groups that would be nice, too, if it was not too much trouble.

Hi Meloches, B&N has never bothered to fix or improve their terrible photo browser.  I would advise not wasting any time with it.  Instead simply install the Fish Bowl app, I think it runs 2.99.  It will allow you to organize (or hide) folders for single photo viewing by swiping or into a slide show. It takes a bit of time to learn but works MUCH better than the stock app.

That's sad.  Question: does BN ever reply to any bug reports on these sites, or have they just provided these forums for people to do tech support for each other and blow off steam?

Sorry to say but this is a Forum for users; not really a technical support point of contact.  Many who participate are developers and there is a lot of good advice and solutions provided.  The BEST solution for the native Media App is REPLACE it with Fish Bowl!

Re: Gallery, thumbnails, and not viewing some jpgs

My issue with NC's media viewing software is two-fold.  First, when viewing pictures in the My Files section, I can only view the picture i click on to open, whereas in other android devices, as well as in Windows, I can click on one picture, and then view all other pictures in the same folder.  Second, in the Gallery, like other people have said, it compiles all files, regardless of folder or media type, into one long continuous list, but also, it does not display them in the proper order or group them together properly.  I've seen them listed in reverse alpha-numerical order, occasionally switching to a list of files from another group, also in reverse order, and then there's the occasional file that's just randomly removed from it's place in line and thrown somewhere else in the list.  If I switch to Fish Bowl or another similar media organizer app, will these issues be addressed?  Will I be able to scroll multiple images at a time, in their proper order, or whatever order I desire?

In a word, yes.  When you open FB you will see all your folders as named thumbnails.  You can hide a folder so it doesn't show in the future if you want, such as the stock wallpapers or other images that are on your NC that aren't relavent.  When you open a folder, the photos inside will display as thumbnails, you can then open them individually or sequentially by swiping or you can set up a slide show.  It's pretty easy to use and unlike many apps, actually comes with good instructions.  If you do get FB, I would encourage you to spend some time organizing your photos by folder while loading the Nook, and read the instructions.

Thx, I'll check it out.
