Re: Looks like it is almost here!

This from Home shopping network?  I wouldn't put too much faith in their story...

Check out what else they are saying:

Retail Value: $504.00

HSN Price: $379.95

Sale Price: $299.90

HSN customers will get their update first!  Yea, right!

Let me see if B&N has raised the price overnight... Nope, $249

Do you thin this is an upgraded Nookcolor?  It's almost double the price.  Maybe B&N is offering a new, better model.

Nope....read "advertising"  with a very critical eye

"retail value" means what someone on their staff thinks it should be worth

"our price" means what we'd sell it for if we could, but we can't

"your price" means that they hope your dumb enough to think you're getting a special bargain and will now buy it.

Re: Looks like it is almost here!

I must agree with Donc13, That is just BS based on what they are saying! I mean think about it, If they are claiming that the Nook Color is worth that, As is??!!! then how true can their words really be? I figure that even IF (and I mean IF) they "get the update first", then we would still have it available for manual download and not to mention the fact that if someone IS dumb enough to buy the NC for that price, who is to say that they are even smart enough to know if they get the NC update first...??? This sounds like a sham to me... !!! JMHO

I think the price is supposed to be based on the fact you get a 2GB (small) micro sdhc card and 100 ebooks with it-albeit most of the books are classics, they are apparently the professionally formatted type which B&N sells generally for somewhere around $3 apiece or so.  I don't have 100 of them, but the ones I have are fantastic and beat what you will get from Gutenberg.  I got most of mine free, but even at $3 they are a steal.  So, I really don't think you can fault them for either that list or sale price.  For those who want a great library to start with, it's actually a good deal.

Re: Looks like it is almost here!

If they sell the books on B&N (or anywhere), then HSN can add up the cost of the Nook Color, the SD card, and each book....and call that the "retail value".  They do this all the time with computers and software.

Also, the price listed right now ($299) will not be the price at midnight, when it becomes the "Today's Special Value".  It will probably be $249 (just guessing).  That way, when people find out they could have downloaded the books free, they will not be mad.

Since HSN refers to the "April update", I think we can be pretty sure it will be ready in April.  People really hold HSN to the fire on these statements.  I am going to be patient and hope for an update in April!

Just for the record the books listed that are included with the HSN NOOKcolor aren't free-most of them aren't anyway.  I will state again, some of them were free at one time from B&N, but only for a limited time.  Normally they sell for an average of $3 apiece-at least the ones I looked up or know about-some are $4, some 3, some 2.  These are not Project Gutenberg (which does have some well-formatted books) ones, but are professionally formatted books.

If you take the average $3 per book-I've looked up more of them and many are $4 ones-the list price doesn't seem so crazy.  For 100 books, it would actually total 300 bucks if you bought them.  Now, most likely most people don't want every book on the list, but it is a great starting point for a lot of people that just want to get reading.

Re: Looks like it is almost here!

Q1? Am I missing something? I have been reading up on the Nook updates since before I bought mine and have read nowhere that they were launching the update in Q1 (at least nowhere in which a B&N rep was quoted). Everything I've read has the vague 'in 2011' timeframe. When businesses say Q1, most are referring to the fiscal (not to be confused with physical) year. We are nearly to the end of Q2 for the 2011 FY so I guess the launch date would be WAY off then, but they still haven't provided a launch date, that I know of. As for an update in Q1 of the calender year, we DID receive an update, we just didn't receive THE update.

This post is from January.  Are the new apps still projected to be available in April?

Yep.  Mid-April, to be exact, according to HSN.  And also, according to them, the store will have "hundreds" of apps in it!  Good news indeed.
