NC 1.4.1 - APK files are not recognized, can't install. Workaround??

I moved a couple of freeware Android programs like QuickPic from my cellphone to theNook in the following directory: My NOOK | My files | My Downloads |

Clicking on the apk file, for example QuickPic_1.5.1.apk, to install the application I get the following error message:

"The NOOK cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format."

How can I install Android freeware on the Nook Color?

Short of rooting your NC, I don't think you can download/sideload any of the android apps, even the free ones.  Rooted, its a whole 'nother ball game... 

There are others more knowledgable than I, but this is what I have gleaned from the boards.

Tested the CynogenMod and the MIUI Rom (www.miui.us) as a dual boot configuration from the SD card, so I can switch between the stock Nook 1.4.1 and a full featured Android OS. Works fine, I'm again the "Master of my Device".The Nook eReader mutated into a small Android tablet with full user access...

As a showcase gallery for clients I'm using the free QuickPic, for the eReader the free FBreader and Kindle for Amazon. Nook for Android doesn't load the content, probably because I'm located in Europe.

All games from my Android cellphone are working, and also the WiFi syncing with MyPhoneExplorer works. No need to attach the cable on the PC.

If I don't miss the stock operating system for the next four weeks I will wipe the Nook definitely and load a third party Android OS on the eMMC of the Nook.

You can't in the Stock B&N Default OS.Except for Apps on the B&N site. Which there isn't a whole lot to choose from.

Your options is to replace firmware with a compatible Android Nook Color firmware overwriting the B&N stock OS. Or create a Bootable CM7 SD card to boot from. The SD card method is the easiest and allows you to dual boot select on boot. Or remove the card and just boot normal B&N. There are forums dedicated to running android on the Nook color. If you root your nook from either method then you can access and install apps from the Android Market.

Or do a manual noot to root the stock firmware, which allows you to download apps from both the B&N app store and the Google Android Market. I loaded a TeamWIN Recovery Project 2.0 image onto a microSD card, copied the manualnooter file linked to as "THIS" at this xda-developers post onto the main directory of the microSD card, booted the Nook from the card, installed the manualnooter, and when I turned off the Nook, popped out the card, and restarted, I was rooted.

From there, use search to get to the "zeam" launcher, which can see the new apps, run NookColorTools and uncheck then recheck the magic checkbox at the top, then run "Market" and sign my gmail account for the Android Market. Search for the Nook Color App Manager, install it, and that allows apps downloaded from the Market to be seen in the stock launcher.

Of course, I only wanted a file manager, YouTube, Crunchyroll, and Crackle ~ so a manual nooter and importing a few Android Market apps onto the stock home page makes sense for my situation. If I could have those four apps from B&N, I wouldn't have ever installed the nooter.

One word of caution: do not check auto-updates in the Android market if you do this, because you ONLY want to update the apps from the Android market that you downloaded from the Android market. Letting the Android market "update" apps actually from B&N will confuse things ~ I'm not sure why, but some will have been modified slightly to take full advantage of Nook hardware.

Optimized my Nook Color with the Open Source Firmware MiRaGe - KANG build of CyanogenMod and kicked the whole B&N stuff from my Nook.The device runs better as before!

Beeing in Europe I can't download from the B&N store. Guess what: If I need to buy a ebook I get it at Amazon and read it with the Kindle app on my Nook Color.
