also the power button either seems to be extremely sensitive or non-responsive....anyone else experience this?

could try a factory reset? you'll lose all your settings and will have to download your content again. turn off your nook and then hold the power and N button until a reset dialogue pops up.

yup, sounds like a bad power switch. but a factory reset won't hurt, especially if the alternative is a refurbed nook. could try blowing out the switch area, maybe something is back there.

i have my original receipt bought in mid january but i haven't really looked or read anythign about the manufacturer's warranty. i'm guessing it atleast covers 6 months to a year right?

yup, b&n has a 1 year replacement warranty period. call 1-800-843-2665.
