Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

Thank you all for the suggestions!   My nook recognizes and lists my wifi router - a "Zoom" product that solved my connection problems with AT&T.  It tries to "connect", tries to "get IP address", says "connected" then immediately disconnects.  It has no problem connecting to my neighbor's unsecured network and that is how I've been able to operate.

Tried many of the suggestions - packet sizes, MAC address, # of links, etc. to no avail.  Emailed Zoom support and got this very interesting reply:  "The nook is something we will be testing soon because as of right now it doesn't work. Chances are it is a compatibility issue and wont work, but we will have to check on this first."

So.....if anyone else is trying to connect via a Zoom modem...............the tech said, it won't work.

How annoying is that!??

If you are using a "Zoom" modem, their support staff has informed me that they are incompatible and will not work.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

My solution was to keep my Netgear WPN824 router but change from WEP to WPA personal encryption. I did need to upgrade the older wireless cards on two computers because of this but they all work fine now. It's up and running for a week without issue.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

I tried using WEP shared that I use for all my other wireless devices and the nook will not connect. When I use WEP open it will connect. but some of my kids devices that are connected do not support WEP open so I am stuck.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

if your using a WEP security mode, change the WEP Encryption to 64bits

Re: Nook Color won't connect to any network

I have....

Re-booted the router.

Dropped all security, as in completely disabled.

My Mac filter was never enabled.

Added the Mac address to the clients table.

Rebooted the nook color.

Have been fighting with this for the last 3 frustrating hours. I am still getting the connected but internet not available. I would take it to a B&N but ours went out of business. Customer service is useless. Anyone can read from a computer screen, even the morons in your CS department in God knows what third world nation. Sorry B&N but this baby is going back to Wally World for some other sucker to buy. Will just order a Kindle instead.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to any network

Android has some known WiFi problems, especially with older routers. I'm sorry it was a pain in the a**. If your router is really old, you might consider replacing it. I bought this one on Amazon for about $29 and have had no problems, in fact many benefits in range over my old one that I didn't necessarily expect.

Otherwise, good luck with your Kindle. It is a very different device, not bad at all, just very different.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to any network

I have an older LInksys wireless-b 2.4 ghz router from 2005, with 128 bit WEP encryption (turned ON): my NC found it immediately, right out of the box, all I had to do is enter the encryption key. I wonder if some of the NCs like yours that are having trouble might have some hardware issues. If you continue having difficulty, I'd exchange it.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

I could not get my NookColor to connect to my home wireless network (Apple Airport Extreme). It would try and just say 'failed'. No clue as to what the problem is. After many hours of searching various blogs for the Nook, Android etc., I stumbled across a solution fo rme.

It's a misunderstanding of what is meant by 'password'. If someone comes to my house and wants to connect to my home network, I tell them to use 'mysecretpassword' and they connect just fine. However, this is NOT what the Nook wants. I had to dig into the Mac's system preferences, then network, click on advanced, highlight my network, then click on the little pencil shaped icon to display the WEP password, click on 'show password'. THIS is the password the Nook needs to connect. Once I entered that, it works just fine.

I have a WEP setup and have never had a problem.

Just make sure you ALLOW/DENY list is not turned on.

Also, the latest update is supposed to fix a lot of the wifi issues.  even entering your password is easier, provided you have the correct one!

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

SchachMeister could you please help me change the security on my router.  I actually have a regular nook, but I can't get mine to connect to home network either.  The router is set with a shared key and I can't figure out how to change the security.  Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that was my problem too.  Sad to say my router hass always been unsecured.  I didn't know how to do it and never bothered with it.  But reading all these posts here about needing to have a secured network, I decided to try it.  After a couple of false starts I was able  to secure my network.  It is easy to do in retrospect, not so easy while I was going thru it.

When I went to try the Nook I couldn't get it to connect.  When I set up my security I was asked to create an Admin password as well as a user password(for guests).  I figured one of these would be the one to work on the Nook but they are not.  Instead the "password" that I had to enter to make it work was what my D-Link DIR-615 router calls the "Pre-Shared Key".  That originally was a 64-character alphanumeric key that was already on the router.  I changed it to a more manageable 13-character and that was what I entered in my Nook as the password.  And success.

I think that maybe why a lot of people are having problems connecting to their WIFI, simply entering the wrong "password".

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

This is a nook issue for  sure.  I am so irritated right now that I will NEVER deal with Barnes and Nobles again.  I am on my 3rd device the 1st had technical glitches, such as turning the pages, highlighting words without me touching the screen and so forth.  The 2nd I had WI fi issues with and now this one will not only Not connect to my wifi it randomly reboots without being told.  I live 35 min from the store , have over 300 dollars in this damn e reader and with i had just dealt with Best Buy or Amazon.  Tech support has been useless, other than to tell me its a Nook problem with the WIFI.

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

I'm not too happy with my Nook color, but I did find a fix. I had to switch to WPA2. It was a hassle, but at least it works now.

Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

Well, it's good to see that years after the Nook Color came out that this is still an issue. Thinking about just going and returning it tonight. I didn't have this much trouble setting up my router, wii, laptop, iPod, Blu Ray Player. I call BS on BN. FIX IT!

Re: Nook Color won't connect to WEP network

Everyone should be using WPA anyway.  Using WEP is little different than having no security at all.  It's out of date and ridiculously easy to break into.

I suspect that most of these connection problems are sue to either user error or wireless routers that are old and need to have their firmware updated or just need to be replaced.

Years?  It was released mid-November 2010.  By my count that makes it almost 4 months old.  :smileywink:  It's significantly different from the NOOK 3G/Wifi which connects much more easily to the various Wifi configurations.
