Hi,
anyone else having this problem?
I bought my Nook Color, primarily for reading PDF documents for school. Basically the format of these PDF's are scanned in images of pages that have been cleaned up and has OCR metadata.
I try to load these PDF's but what is displayed is a big red X across the page. I checked the file by opening it on my computer from the Colornook, while it was mounted as a USB device on my computer, so the file is not corrupted. I can provide a 622KB sample PDF if anyone else wants to try it out. Just let me know.
Maybe one of the B&N techs/admins can fill in what is going on here?

Same problem. It cannot display image. I have a word document with an image. It shows red X instead of an image. I also had similar problems with some pdfs with images

I have the same problem with several PDFs that I downloaded from public domain sites as well. Please post the resolution to this forum.

I have a handful of color PDFs loaded on mine and they all display perfectly. These are all craft patterns that I have either purchased or downloaded from magazine websites. The only issue I have is that if I add them to a shelf, their names don't show up properly, but I suspect this is because I need to do something different with how I name them and I've not referred back to the manual yet to check it out.

I noticed this problem as well, however it is not consistent. I have a bunch of PDFs and while most worked fine, there is at least one where the red X mark is there on images and the first page. I haven't had a chance to explore further (maybe size?)

I'm also having this problem, and will be waiting on the answer for your problem.
One of my major goals with the Nook Color is to be able to read PDF files that I've downloaded of some very old scanned magazines -- and, unfortunately, none of those files will display properly, instead giving me that red "X".

Hi,
I have the same problem. I have downloaded some pdf books and it shows me red x instead of the actual page. I also face turning page problem with pdf, they do not trun by tapping at right or left side rather I have to swap from bottom towards top to change the page. For pdf files, it does not sow any content options so there is no way to jump to a particular content. However It allows to go to a specific page by entering page no but from that page I can not move further to the next page. It sticks to that particular page. Most of my documents are in pdf format.
Does any one know solution to this, please reply. If I dont get the solution then I will probably have to return it.
Thanks.

I have the same problem but may have a solution. (At least it worked in one case I tried.) There is a product called cutepdf writer (http://www.cutepdf.com/). It is free for personal use. When installed it shows up as another printer. Then:
- open the PDF document on a windows machine
- print the PDF document
- select cutepdf instead of your printer
- it will ask you where you want to save the file on your disk
- transfer the new PDF document (file you saved) to you nook
When you display the printed PDF version of the original PDF document you should see the images that were shown as a red X in the original PDF document. As I said it worked in one case for me but I don't see why it should not work in others.

Thanks for the idea beamish, although in my case i'd rather leave the metadata intact with my PDFs. Jeffrey, were you able to replicate the issue with the PDF I sent you?

I just loaded a PDF and the first page was okay but the rest of the pages had the Giant Red X problem. I downloaded the CutePDF program and tried it. It worked fine. This seems like a good workaround until the PDF problem is fixed.
I also had an issue turning pages, although the "go to page" feature worked fine. Then I realized that instead of tapping the left and right sides like a regular book, use your finger to swipe the page top to bottom (or vice versa) to change pages. It's as though the PDF were a landscape-oriented book instead of a vertical format.

I HAD the same issue once. MY PROBLEM, I think, Is that the cat Knocked out the cord when I was transferring over the files. So the main page loads the giant red X, the second page fails to load and tell me its corrupt, this MAY be your issue

The page turning is 'by design'. I believe the difference is because the PDF reader is by QuickOffice while the ePUB is a separate application built by B&N (or bought from some other place). So, the two have different behaviors in terms of page turns. I do agree that it can be a bit confusing especially when switching between the two formats.

Many others in the forum including me have the same issue. For me, some PDFs have the red X but some do not. I haven't figured out the pattern yet. And no, I do not have a cat (or any other pet).

I'm getting this too. This is probably a problem with the PDF using a compression that Quickoffice can't decode. i haven't tried the cutepdf workaraound but it should be a workaraound for now

Everyone who is having this problem please pm me with a sample of the file you are trying to sideload. I will see what I can do to recreate the problem and attempt to find a resolution.
