Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

You get an IP address from your (or anyone's you connect to) wireless router. The nook will obtain it automatically if you are connected to the wifi device.

What exactly are you having a problem with?

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

"There are a *LOT* of wireless routers from a lot of different companies ..."  Thats a lame excuse and a cop out. The issue is that the network has to be at 54mbps or lower for the NC to connect. Same network at 300mbps and the NC will not connect.

The problem isnt with the network, the problem is with the NC. Stop making lame excuses and blaming the routers and accept that the NC is flawed. This isn't a "user's connection" issue.

After all the finger pointing is done, maybe someone at B&N can do a firmware fix that will perhaps allow the NC to connect to a 300mbps network?

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

At home, I have a Netopia 2247-02 wireless router set for WPA-PSK (1 or 2); 802.11 b+g.  It supports 4 laptops and 2 Evos.  I have been trying to authenticate the Nook for 3 days.  I connected with security disabled, but not otherwise. After reeentering the 26-character key more than 15 times, I tried going with UPPER case on the Nook out of desperation. I immediately got in.

In theory, case should have no bearing on the key, which is a hexadecimal value.   '0xf' == '0xF".  But I can confirm that in my case, WLAN mode (802.11b only ; 802.11g only ; both) and security (WPA only; WPA2 only or both) made no difference.

I am not going to hose up my connectivity at this point.  But I will retest at work, which the Nook also did not work with the WPA - PSK WiFi.  (Where everyone's laptop and phone works..)

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

Erff - I erred.  The WPA PSK 'key' is not a string of hex char.  It is a passphrase. Which apparently is case-sensitive.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

It's a netgear issue.

I had the same problem with my nokia smartphone before. I've never had any issues with any other routers.

The way I fixed it was by going to the netgear website and downloading the latest driver. Then just connect to your modem/router via cable and select update driver, select the downloaded file on your HD and go.

There are a lot of netgear modems out there since Walmart has been selling them for year.

I hope someone at B&N gets wise about it.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

Reducing my mbps to 54 was the ONLY way my Nook Color would connect to my wireless network at home.  I would love to see a firmware fix that would fix this problem.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

I'm not sure if this is a fix the NC needs or the router needs.  In theory, the router should auto-negotiate down to whatever the Nook needs it to run at to work.

It is possible that the NC is not telling the router "hey, too fast, slow down already" -- but it may be trying to, and the router is not hearing it.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

I have a Linksys router and this solution worked for me.  I changed the "Wireless Network Mode" to "G-Only" then clicked "Save Settings." (The default setting was "Mixed," meaning a combination of B, G, etc.) I then powered off my Nook, turned it back on, and all is working fine.

The Linksys setting above can be found under the "Wireless," then "Basic Wireless Settings" menus.

Good luck!!

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

The Nook Color WIFI issue has NOT been resolved. I had no problem connecting to a wireless b/g/n router at 54Mbs. The specifications for the Nook Color indicate it has wireless b/g/n capabilities. All these references to set routers to 54 Mbs to resolve the connection issue completely miss the point. Wireless "g" has a maximum throughput of 54Mbs. Wireless "n" has a maximum throughput of 300Mbs. B&N should not be misleading customers with specifying the Nook Color has wireless "n" capabilities. The Nook Color is the ONLY wi-fi device I have that can not receive data greater than 54Mbs. B&N is now advertising the Nook Color as being aable to stream Netflix (and someday Hulu Plus). Unless B&N fixes the Nook Color wi-fi to meet wireless "n" standards, there are going to be a lot of unhappy people trying to stream video at 54Mbs. I am tempted to return my Nook Color because of this.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

I agree. The nook color specifications are compatable with wireless b/g/n. Limiting the network to 54Mbs maximum is proof that B&N does not currently meet the requirements for wireless "n" which allows for speeds up to 300Mbs.

B&N needs to fix this problem or publically admit that the specifications advertised are WRONG and that wireless n is not supported.

The NC works fine with most N routers (works fine with mine). Setting speed to G is just a workaround for those routers where the NC has a problem connecting with speed set to N.

With the 1.4 update released hopefully they can start work on a next update to do bug fixes for things like Wifi support.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

You should have received a default administrator password with your unit. Typically you go to your browser and enter "192.168.1.1" in the browser bar (no quotes) and hit enter. You should then see a login screen where you enter your administrator password.

Your router may require a different IP address to be entered in the browser bar. The one I've shown is used by many, but not all stock routers.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

Lately, routers lean more towards a dedicated application that they provide which lets you configure your router. So look for that as well. Either the app, or what ExNihilo suggests, should be how you get at the settings.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

I guess this probably works with a "regular" router but I have an old Airport that does have the WEP but I can't find on my Apple G4 Mac the router speed. I looked under network and I did see the Airport but no way to change speed. Does your solution apply to only PCs or does it work with Macs as well? I do have a Toshiba PC netbook and it connects just fine to the Airport. Thanks for your assistance. I just got it and I can't do anything with it since it won't connect.

12-25-11 The no connection issue with my Nook and Belkin router was resolved simply by taking the space out of my two word SSID. Make sure you never use a space in your SSID.

I have three spaces in my SSID and I have wifi with all my wireless devices including the nook color, so your finding isn't true for all routers. Mine's an older DLink DIR655.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved NOT

Just made what seems to be a mistake buying a Nook Tablet for my wife.  Same BS with connectivity.  Running a Fios M1424-wr router.  Works well with my 2 PC's.  (All boxes runnig XP vatiants) Nada with the tablet.  Works fine at the store where purchased.  Wife ws assured that it would connect "fine" when she returned home.  Same BS.  Tried setting the router to WPA.  No nook connect, no pc connect either.  There should be a disclaimer that a nook won't work with WEP.  I'm ready to return it if the issue can't be resolved.

Re: Nook color WiFi connection issue resolved

Thank you Thank you...I cannot wait to get home and do this.  I have a Netgear router and everywhere else I go that has WiFi, it works great but at my own home.  I too called Barnes and Noble and maybe the tech people need to know what this solution is when they use their computers to help us troubleshoot.  I was getting so frustrated because I know my wireless etc is okay at home and did not want to have to call tech support with them trying to figure this out =/

Thanks much
