Poor image quality with CBZ format?

When opening CBZ pages on my Nook Color, I always see a blurry, badly compressed image when in the full-screen view.  I figured that this had something to do with the image size of the page and the resolution of the Nook, except that when I pinch to zoom I actually zoom in on a blurry, badly compressed image until when, usually at a very high magnification, the sharp, full resolution image is loaded.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I recently switched back to the stock OS after a year of using CM7 exclusively as an ereader.  I was really excited about native CBR support, but if this issue can't be fixed, or if I have to jump through hoops to get around it, then the functionality seems pretty much unusable.

CBZ I believe is not really a specific format. If I remember correctly it is just a zip file. Copy comic to computer and rename .cbz to .zip and uncompress normally. Should end up with pages of jpgs. And then you can view them on the computer with any image viewer program and verify if it is the quality of the original jpgs and their original size,dpi,etc... As have seen some really badly converted and low res source original pages that where scanned badly.

Just a thought as haven't done comics on the Nook yet. And you do mention that it does eventually get it right when magnifying max? And you have tried other comic viewer apps out there on android side?

Re: Poor image quality with CBZ format?

The images are fine; the problem is entirely with how the Nook displays them.  Often you'll get artifacting problems with fine details like text when pages are scaled, but it seems like the Nook doesn't just scale them.  It compresses them, or even resizes them.  It does something to the images, and makes them look terrible in the process, instead of just displaying them.

I'm not experiencing that ~ I just starting converting cbr's to cbz's to be able to read them with the stock ereader, and a golden age SF magazine I was reading with Perfect Viewer seems to be just as sharp in the stock ereader.

However, cbz is just a a pile of graphic images in a folder zipped together. It could be NC has a better zoom for specific formats of the picture files and worse zoom for others. If you can move the cbz to a PC, unzip it, and look at the files inside, what is the file extension of the images ~ .jpg and .png would be the most common ones, but several others are possible.

Re: Poor image quality with CBZ format?

I get the same thing happening on many of my cbz files.  Can't seem to narrow down why it does it more on some than others   I find if I zoom, then swith a page and switch back it's much clearer.  The .jpg files in the cbz are fine.  Reading the cbz on my computer looks great.  It definitly has something to do with the nook and how it's rendering the image.

Re: Poor image quality with CBZ format?

I am having the same problem. It's very annoying. Everything is blury and small text is difficult to read in full page view but when zoomed in its very high resolution. The strange thing is that it changes. THIS WORKS LIKE CLOCK WORK: On a blurry full page i'll double tap to zoom in where its high res, then pinch zoom out a little, double tap back in, then out to full page and the full page will be in high res. Works every time. Well, "works" isnt the right word because its a pain. But now, with the full page crystal clear, when I zoom in it gets blurry. It's reversed! and I can do the same technique again to reverse it. What is this nonsense?

Re: Poor image quality with CBZ format?

My guess is that there's a sweet spot for image sizes that the Nook reader likes to use.  It probably tries to conserve RAM by compressing or making smaller versions of image files that it thinks are too large.

Since it obviously CAN display the images at full resolution, though, it should be something that can be fixed in an update.

Does this make any sense to someone who knows more about this than I do?
