No, you shouldn't. You do have to login and register when your *first* start up your nook, so you do have to have wifi or be somewhere where there is wifi available. Some of the registration to B&N (setting up a credit card, etc. or even purchases) can be done on your computer. And you need the wifi to download any new books you've purchased or sync between applications (say...your PC and your NOOK). But not to read. What's nice is once you do set up a wifi hotspot like at home, it remembers it and will connect automatically unless you turn off wifi.

They do have a Nook with 3G which eliminates the wifi need, but I understand the speed is slower than wifi and they aren't making the NOOKColor with 3G.

Re: So I Need WiFi @ Home to Read

when you say download, do you mean purchased and did not open the book until you got home?

Because I found that you do need wifi to download the full book.

To be clear to completely register you must set up a default credit card with your address attached to it in your BN account.  This can be most easily done on your computer.

If you don't have wifi at home and aren't near any wifi (though McDonalds has free wifi), you could try downloading any newly bought books from BN to your computer and sideloading them into your my files folder and then into the books folder on your NOOKcolor.

They should act like any other sideloaded book, but you will still have to have the credit card attached to the account you are using on your nook.

Next time you are in range of wifi that your NOOKcolor can access those ebooks will start downloading to it to the normal area that BN books download to, so you would probably want to go back and delete the ones you sideloaded.  Just remember though your bookmarks will not sync between these books so any you will have to make note of the pages you are on for any you are reading.

And yes, you can read your downloaded books without having wifi.  You can also turn off the wifi on your NC to save battery time.

When you say you can't get to any menu on it, what do you mean?  Is there a black screen or is it the opening screen with the n on it?  If it is in sleep mode with the black screen hit the hard n button at the bottom to wake it up and the n screen will come up and then you must drag the little n button that is on the left hand side of the screen all the way to the right-touch it with your finger and drag it across the screen.

If the screen is black and hitting the hard n doesn't wake it up then it is completely off and you have to turn it on first.

There is a slider on the lower left of the screen when you bring it out of sleep.  Drag it to the right with your finger and it should open for use.

Any books that have been downloaded should be available to read.

If it is completely off you have to hold in the power button untill you see the screen  kind of blink/light up to get it to power up...

NO, you do not need WiFi to READ on the nook.   You only need it to setup your original registration.    You will need WiFi to download to the Nook Color but once it's downloaded, you do not need WiFi on to read anything.

There is a manual here  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nookcolor/support/ that you can read online that will explain all that to you.

Did you touch the "on" button in the upper left (just a brief touch is needed)? If it is shut down you have hold down the on button to turn it on or off.

Re: So I Need WiFi @ Home to Read

You only need wifi on the NOOKcolor for the following things:

Using 'Web'/browser

Using Pandora

Purchasing books from the BN store

Once purchased, downloading the full book from the BN store

Connecting to Facebook/Twitter/Google

You do not need wifi to READ fully downloaded books and sideloaded content nor to listen to mp3's or mp4's you have loaded onto the NOOK.

did you ever get this issue resolved? I am having the same problem. I can't download a book. I do not have wifi and if I have to go somewhere to do it ie Barnes and Noble, I might as well forget the NOOK AND  BUY THE BOOK !

Re: So I Need WiFi @ Home to Read

Does the local public library offer wifi?  Or perhaps a coffee shop, like Starbucks would be a place that you could access wifi.

Do you have internet access in your home, via any connection type?

No offense intended but how did you think books would get on the Nook without some sort of connection to the Internet?

You're asking for a response to a question that is over a year old.  It's possible the original poster is no longer here.

But, yes you have to have wireless to download a book the Nook, it has to be able to connect to the BN store.  However, you can buy the book on your computer and sideload it to the Nook.  There are some instructions for sideloading books, which is simply a term for copying the books from your computer to your Nook.   The isntructions are for the Simple Touch but the basics are the same.

Oh, and all of the more common eReaders require you to have WiFi to buy the books directly from the device and have them downloaded wirelessly.

And as was pointed out, Starbucks and McDonalds have free Wifi if there's one close.  Or you could buy a router and set up WiFi at home.

Ferbie, there really is no way to say this and not sound snarky, but I am really just curious.  How did you think you were going to load books onto your Nook?

If you don't have WiFi at home you can:

go to a WiFi hotspot like McDonalds, Starbucks, etc.

Or hook up your Nook to your computer using the USB cable, effectively making it a storage device and download/purchase books from B&N (or wherever) and transfer them (sideload) to one of your "My Stuff" folders

Or ask a friend who is even moderately computer literate to help.
